We all know now that Sony has botched just about every second of the PS3's existance... which is more to blame...
1. Development--- The overloading of so called "cutting edge" unproven technlogy which has given the unit an incredibly unrealistic price tag, unless you want to give things up. As well as making the console incredibly hard to program for.
2. Marketing--- The most god aweful comercials and ads, maybe ever, along with poor promotion of their few half way decent exclusives.
3. Underestimating the competition.....

I would say development. While it sounds awesome on paper to have the cell and all the bundled features and BR...Sony should have known that selling a console for $500 or $600 is just stupid and people wouldn't support it. Even when MS launched at $399 it was a risky move and is probably the reason the 360 hasn't exploded the way it should have (up until recently it has only sold the same as original Xbox).
Sony should have understood the risks of launching a console at roughly double what the competition is at, and significantly more than people are used to. Even now, with a $399 model, people are more willing to pay $399 but it still is a barrier as I think most customers won't jump in until we see a more reasonable $299 price tag. Even devs and publishers are saying prices have to drop much faster for the 360 and PS3 to get better customer adoption.
I don't think we'll see the true winner between the 360 and PS3 until they drop to the $299 price. Right now the audience is still mostly hardcore gamers, rich casuals, and hardware nerds who are early adopters.
