11/16/09 WORLD EXCLUSIVE: Sony has chosen the GPU for the next generation PlayStation.

We can officially reveal in this world exclusive that SCEI has officially chosen the Imagination Technologies currently in development PowerVR Series 6 architecture for it's next generation PlayStation console scheduled for 2012 worldwide deployment.

The PlayStation 4 shall use a high end variant of the Series 6 line. Performance, specifications and features are at this time unknown. The Series 6 shall receive an official announcement from IMGTEC sometime in 2010, with initial models targeting the smartphone and netbook sector.

It is believed that Sony has gained exclusive rights to the technology for the console space.

IMGTEC's PowerVR technology uses an advance technique called TBDR which can outperform a competing IMR product from nVidia/ATi by 3-5 fold whilst maintaining equal die size and price point. TBDR was the primary reason the SEGA DreamCast was capable of such astonishing graphical feats as early as 1998.

Interestingly SCEI has also chosen IMGTEC as the graphics provider for their next generation PSP. That particular product shall however be using the Series 5XT.

Mr Zachary Morris

Sourcey

Yep, look like Sony plans to reborn GPU series that after Dreamcast got down went down hill to mobile industry (and they doing quite well, iPhone for example and they have more powerful mobile GPUs in head). Disscus

This is the first nail in the coffin of the PS4. As long as they insist on using non-universal hardware, it'll only fail more.

So long Sony. Maybe you can stick around as a software development company and keep those great IPs coming.

ChrisJ2004

Non-universal? what do you mean? Any GPU can be run on both DirectX and OpenGL and work exacly the same way if GPU producer will make drivers for them. As i said 1000x here , DirectX, Direct3D in more detail are not part of GPUs, i don't know why people get this ideas. Besides, iPhone SDK have OpenGL for PowerVr and devlopers doing quite well on it.

Sony will continue supporting the PS3 as they did the PS2, they just want to get their new console on the market sooner or at the same time as Microsoft does. When we go into next gen, they will probably abandon the 360 as they did the original Xbox.

That's not necessarily true - MS makes money from every xbox 360 sold, MS's situation with the original xbox was much different than the x360's. On a side note, Brazil can look forward to the PS3 being released there for $500 in 6 years!

I still doubt that MS will continue support for the 360 with all of its hardware problems.

I highly doubt the PS4 will cost anything above 400$, since Sony probably learned from their mistakes

And does anyone honestly believe IMG-TEC is going to relese a card more powerful than what ATi and nVidia is offering by 2012? I bet it won't even touch a HD6870.

I remember that PowerVR actually made a competitive video card around the time of geforce 2. the TBDR technology basically allowed it to not render areas that were not visible. but the geforce and ati cards at the time were still generally faster in games. The PowerVR card did best in areas with a lot of walls so that views were often obstructed. I dont' know how well they've improved the technology but i would be not at all surprised if that 3-5 times performance over nvidia/ati would be from synthetic benchmarks that make the TBDR shine.

Actually they do. PS3 and 360 were quite powerful systems back in 2005. I believe the PS3 used a variant 7800 GT of their G80 die and the Xenos was ATi's first unified shader model off the R600.

Its just that, PC surpassed them in the following quarter.

Wonderful idea... have developers learn another piece of technology that is only relevant to one piece of hardware in the entire world.

The next generation will be even more cross platform orientated than the current one; and they want to use none standard GPU tech? Oh this should be funny to watch.

I suppose 2012 is a pretty good guesstimate of when the next consoles will be coming. It kind of makes me sad, though, because I just got my PS3 not too long ago. Oh well, I've got another three years to save up for whatever system comes out next that I have to have. Not to mention I believe Sony will probably continue PS3 support into 2015 or 2016, long after Microsoft ditches the 360 and Nintendo is like "Wii what?"

Pretty sure Gears 2 could've had whatever budget it wanted, and it still wasn't graphics king. I think you also forgot to mention that maybe Naughty Dog is talented? You don't just throw money in someones face and expect them to know how to program for the Cell ...they all learned/know how to do it, because they're Naughty God.

PowerVG was fighting with 3Dfx, before nVidia and ATI came and crashed both of them, 3Dfx died (RIP, they made fundaments of what we have today) and PowerVR after Dreamcast, was been pushed to quite empty mobile market. PowerVR currently rules mobile device GPU market, even probably nVidia got lower market shere here and ATI does not exist, when you see mobile phones specs you see tons of devices with there chip, so im not supprised that PSP2 may have it. But PS4? Thats quite supprice since PowerVR didn't do any big GPU since 10 years.

360 is getting mostly multi pats and money hatted PC games. Also, M$ won't license a game that doesn't use DirectX. So they can't go down to the metal like they did for UC2 and KZ2. The fact that its best looking game is running on a multiplataform engine and the only thing its preventing ports are moneyhats is telling.

Sony going with PowerVR wouldn't be the weirdest thing I'd ever heard, but that's a complete no-name sight that doesn't even give a source for their "news". Also that "3-5x faster" nonsense is a load of crap.

That's their fault then, if they put the budget higher maybe it would be console graphics king. But Uncharted 2 is console graphics king now. You can't act like U2 being console graphics king is bad just because Sony spent more money on it (which nobody is sure about because U2 cost hasn't even been revealed or anything).

What sucks is backwards compatibility.

Xbox had to pay royalties to nVidia to emulate Xbox games on the 360 since they made the switch to ATi. SONY would have to do the same to preserve BC and even then it would be only certain games.

"a performance increase of 3-5 fold over nvidia and ati"...yet nvidia and ati are the ones with the killer gaming GPUs for PC and console gaming. Sounds like a load of bs. AMD/ATI and Nvidia can match any company in gpu design. This is a fact.

I have a feeling the next XBox is gonna be significantly more powerful than the PS4. I don't have any real basis for feeling this, it's just an intuition. Micro$oft is too bloody rich. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they've got some innovative, superior graphics card deal signed up with ATI.

Meh, I'll give the gen a year or two before I decide which console to go for like I usually do. I made the right decision for myself with the PS3 this gen, but maybe next time around I'd wanna get into the Halo side of things. Always good to have variety. I've been on the GOWs, GTs and MGS's for 2 gens now; time for something new.
