The hardware If something is a goal for me was that it was getting hold of a photograph of the PlayStation 4 itself, but this is sadly failed. The PlayStation 4 is still only on paper but a console for developers and only a select few people know how the device actually really look like. Sony also find it not necessary to the looks of the PS4 to share with developers, because here they simply have nothing. Of course, Sony then also a good point, but this is obviously bad for us. What I have got is a very comprehensive document on the specifications of the PlayStation 4. Thus, the PlayStation 4 AMD Fusion APU get with the CPU and GPU sit together on the same chip. The code name for this chip is 'Liverpool' According developers would chip in "real talk" over 10x longer than that of the PS3 can. It would be a quad-core AMD x86 CPU running at 3.2GHz which contain the code name 'Steamroller' know. The GPU is an ATI r10xx at 800MHz with 1843 GFLOPS, this is code-named "Tahiti." This chip is also include on AMD Radeon HD 7970, both chips (CPU and GPU) are 28nm processors. In terms of memory, there is much uncertainty with the PlayStation 4, as was the initial plan for Sony 2GB unified memory in the machine to stop. This is still only a point for discussion and developers ask whether this really can be brought up to 4GB, these choices are viewed by Sony. For comparison, the Wii you would to contain 1.5 GB of memory. In terms of disc drive the PlayStation 4 will again be equipped with Blu-Ray, the space offers a Blu-Ray disc (50GB) is in fact still remains enough and so we use this technology. The back of the PS4 you will have a HDMI 1.4 port to put in and it will have a maximum output of 1080 and not the aforementioned 2048p. In total, during the launch two PlayStation 4 are available, both are only equipped with a hard drive larger than 320GB. In terms of bundles, there are no concrete plans at Sony. What the exact difference between the two we do not know, but this is probably just the hard drive size. Also, the PS4 will have a special place for patches, OS etc this is stored on an internal 16 GB of flash storage.

599$...if this is even possible. I massively call BS...I don't see Sony making the same mistake twice.

"599$...if this is even possible. I massively call BS...I don't see Sony making the same mistake twice."

Well, they may make the pricing mistake a second time, but at least if that's true, they're not making the hardware mistake again (cell).

And 16GB flash for the OS to boot off of, though interesting, isn't any of the core functioning of the console. (Ram)If they do 2gb they've failed, 4gb they're skimping(and failed) 8gb is 'on par' (with previous generations gains) anymore would be a surprise.

Your title made me think they were doing 16gb ram, not flash. : /

The rumor has been shot down, a 7970 is a 250w TDP GPU, Sony cant afford the the cooling and power needed for a gpu like that. and keep their next console cost effective.

yeah that's what a lot of console gamers are forgetting. High-end PC graphics cards are physically large, consume a lot of electricity and generate a lot of heat. You can't just shove one into a compact console case and expect it to work. We all know about the heat problems xbox 360 had and as people have pointed out the GPU inside that generated a fraction of the heat a card would today.

Tell me about, out landish specs, with no basis in basic computer hardware knowledge to even make it believable. Sony and MS will use APU's because its cost effective, and APU's purpose is to give a high performance to watt ratio. They will not create and use chipsets that use 150w+ because of the cost needed to run it.

Xbox's cooling solution was flawed and cheap, causing the failures. As it is, modern gpu's ARE in a tiny box, self-contained to keep the airflow steady over the heatsinks.

Cooling has massively improved, or we'd have fried gpu's galore, a 7800gtx cooler couldn't dream of cooling a 680gtx.

And modern gpus, off the shelf, are in 'no' danger of overheating, pretty big headroom for cooling, so a smaller box, with more heat generating crap in it isn't going to fry it so easily, so long as they don't go and try to overclock it. Maybe underclock it instead! (a little)

Its funny because, MS had issues cooling the 360's Xenos GPU and it was only 90w. and they expect MS or Sony to use gpu's that are nearly 3x harder to cool and power....

I can imagine them basing the GPU off of the 7000 series, but it won't be a 7970. They may share a similar architecture though.

i don't see how 599$ is expensive

When xbox360 costed 400$ + 80$ wifi, 20$ battery recharge pack and 350$ online play for 7 years

Thats 850$ for one console

The next consoles will be 1080p. There is no reason what so ever to use a 7970. Im betting when it comes down to it the next consoles will have lower clocked 6xxx series. Start of this gen i believe PC had 79xx serires. And consoles ended up with dumbed down 7800 series

The only thing we can agree on about PS4 is that it'll have the 50GB blu ray capacity, maybe... possibly 2GB RAM but Sony aren't exactly the best when it comes to hardware and they seem to cheap out on RAM to cut costs. I'd like at least 2GB RAM but I recon we'll see that as being total system RAM plus video RAM.

PS1 2mb x 16
PS2 32mb x 16
PS3 512mb x 16
PS4...8192, if any less then they're skimping.

2000 would be a 'massive' skimp, that's wii territory, and modern games can already chew up 2gb of vram (crysis2), utterly non-future proof, it's not even modern proof.

I really have no idea why it seems so absurd to people that a console in 1-2 years could have todays hardware in it... last gen sure did it. (with the xbox, the ps3 not so much)

They sure can! When it's around half as powerful as the PC version of 7970. Just look at the TFLOPS, it's like a 7850.

Depends on the die shrink and cooling. As for cost these parts will be cheapand out dated by then and be purchased in bulk.

Who cares? It has kick ass games that no other consoles have.

But still, the PS3 is selling really well and Sony seems happy with it. That's all that matters.

Microsoft made a huge mistake with the 360, IMO. Xbox Live fees, all add-ons such as Wi-Fi adapter, batteries for controller, none upgradeable hard drive, etc.

I don't know why the 360 sold more. It's a mystery. No games, Xbox Live fees and inferior hardware - and people still buy them. When you add all of that stuff up, it's more expensive than PS3.

Xbox 360 buyers are stupid. I would probably get flamed over this, but that's my opinion.

Hard core gamers bought and it spread by word of mouth. Many gamers bought the 360 because their peps had one. The ps3 was late and psn was not that good along with the 500-600 buck price. Sure sony is the better deal now but for years sony was getting owned. The fact that sony was able to close the gap after that horrible start means they have great leadership. If the ps4 is similar in power and ease of use then devs should go with sony.

Consoles are always at where the top computer gpu is at when they first come out. All these gpu makers want the consoles to have the best. It would be beneficial to all. So that computer games wont be held back by the primitive graphics of the consoles. I bet the console makers get a big discount from using a more top of the line gpu because it creates more reasons for computer gamers to buy their gpu's.

People it's not all about price with these consoles. It's a big part of it but people seem to forget about size cooling and power consumption of a GPU like that. never going to happen unless you want a big console like a desktop

Yeah but this gen has had a huge influx of very poweful GPUs. No way a console is going to have a kepler GPU in it and be efficient. It needs adequate cooling and a sufficient PSU to boot. Also a 680 now costs a lot of money. Consoles will be lucky if they get a 560Tis power next gen.

But hey, if I'm wrong then at least we'll get superb looking games

Remember, console architecture is different from PC architecture. Console GPU's can very well have some advanced features available only on high-end cards, next gen console can very well end up sporting some sort of 480-560 Ti-tier GPU at a reasonable price.

Yeah. Besides, some of you seem to have blinders on in terms of your analysis of the past. The 1950 XTX and 7900 GT were just as gigantic and red hot as today's expensive GPUs and consoles managed to utilize their equivalents.

They cant bypass the extra need for cooling and power plain and simple. Console's with every generation are using more and more off the shelf Pc hardware, they might have a few custom alterations. However Both MS and Sony are not going to use gpu's are require more then 100w. MS and Sony will also follow suit in using an APU design as with their latest console models. APU's save money in many aspects from material costs to being more reliable.

Come on now.... 360's massive RRoD ratio from 2005-2008, anyone?, or the fact that Sony had to gimp the RSX aka G70(Geforce 7800) to keep the heat down, and no todays gpu's are much hotter then gpu's back in the day. For example 7800GTX has a TDP of 81w, while a GTX 680 has a TDP of 225w. We are talking about 2.7x the power required and heat produced. The 360's Xenos gpu had a TDP of around 90w and they had issues cooling it until the 3rd revision of the 360.As I stated many times dont expect a GPU that has more the a 100w TDP, For example an AMD 7770 uses 80w and is at least 5x faster then the 360's gpu.

Modern gpus also have much more headroom, in cooling, than their predecessors. If it 'was' the end all issue, then we'd already be frying gpus's, but we're not at the absolute limit yet. I had a ATi9800 fry itself, and that certainly doesn't draw much power, not nearly enough for a modern gpu to fry itself, even w/o a fan.

A lot of the 360's issues were due to skimping on quality parts and morons putting xbox's in cabinets. It's not that they couldn't be cooled, they just cut corners.

Also... the 7900/1950xtx were a good bit more powerful than the consoles, the PS3's is something of a cut down 7800gt and the xbox's is a transitional x1800xt type thing, with a lower core clock (by 125mhz). And the reason PS3's 7800ish was cut down a bit was probably to make it cheaper since they threw so much money at the cell and blu-ray, not that they couldn't figure out how to cool the damn thing.
