Are you so delusional to actually think that Sony didn't know Microsoft was making the Xbox One S and they rushed to get the slim created and out to the market? Why do you think it's releasing in the same direct time frame as the XOS, because of a fluke? Happenstance? A coincidence?

I know you're naive, but come the **** on lol...

Hahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...

Now sony knew about the XBOS...hahahahaahahaa

Man you are pathetic what some people will do to avoid saying they were wrong...lol

Why do you think the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are almost the same consoles from a design and hardware perspective? Someone found out what the other was doing, and given Sony has the more powerful console I think it's safe to say they played their design off of inside information of the Xbox One and one upped it.

Why do you think Scorpio is being built? It's reactionary as well to information surrounding the Neo, and it seems pretty plain to see that the PlayStation 4 Slim is reactionary to the Xbox One S, that's how these things work...

Or perhaps AMD had the better pitch to both companies and they both bought into their designs? Sony announced their console months before MS. If you think companies can change their specs and redesign entire consoles a few months prior to reveal, then why didn't MS up their specs for E3 several months later?

I find it incredibly hilarious that you are trying to suggest that Sony is a spying copycat and MS is the real genius here. It's a new low!

This holiday i'm expecting the PS4 being sold for $269.99, the PS4S for $349.99 and Neo $449.99. MS better be ready cuz its gonna be bru-tal.

I see PS4 at 250, Slim at 299 and Neo at 399.

this is the lowest prices i see em going as well. but since Sony is crushing the bone so easily, they can charge a little more for the original and the brand spanking new one. PS4S is perfectly suited for $300, tho. Even if the OG ps4 is only $30 cheaper (which then be lowered by an additional $20 for that $250 price tag).

If the slim doesn't have any 4K capabilities then it would make no sense for it to cost more than the current PS4 since it will be cheaper to make. I see them phasing out the current PS4 and selling the slim for $249.

It'll probably have 4k since its competing against SlimBone. Since MS offers no challenge, there's no reason to lower the price.

No UHD Bluray drive, 4K upscaling, or HDR?.. if that's true and they price this the same as the Xbox One S ($299), things will be very interesting heading into the holiday season..

Most people don't have a 4K TV and even less have a 4K TV with HDR.

agreed.. but if a casual consumer is interested in a lower-cost $299 console, why not pick the more "future proof" option?.. Even if you don't have a 4K TV today, you may pick one up down the line and already owning a device that supports UHD Bluray, 4K upscaling, HDR, and HDMI 2.0 is an obvious advantage from a value standpoint..

Yea I agree on a $299 Slim and $399 Neo but with a $269 sale on the OG PS4 in order to get rid of the stock..

I would assume so as well but early leaks are telling a different story (none of this is officially confirmed of course):

"You can see in some of the packaging shots that the system doesn’t mention 4K anything. The side of the console simply likes Blu-Ray as the system’s format, no mention of UHD Blu-Ray. There is no mention of HDMI 2.0 cable on the console’s box either. This means it will not play any 4K content most likely. This differs from Microsoft’s Xbox One S, which is the cheapest way to get a 4K UHD Blu Ray player currently at $299.99."

I don't think someone who would choose a slim over a Neo to begin with is even considering a 4K TV anytime soon or worried about a future proofed product. I think for this approach to be successful the slim needs to be as cheaper as the Neo as possible. I'm talking like a $200 difference in price minimum. Otherwise one of the 2 will be sitting on shelves not selling at all because no one is going to buy a $300 slim version of a 3 year old console if a $400 Neo that is vastly superior in every way is sitting right beside it.

Seems like many here don't understand the definition of slim...

OT: Eh, I dig the OG model more. Sharp lines and all. However, the controller symbols on the bottom is a nice touch.

I see this as more evidence of the leaks being fake. It wouldn't make any sense to make a hardware revision without at least updating the HDM to use HDMI 2.0. They did this with the PS3 slim so that it could play 3D games and video, why not for 4K video playback? The PS4 is still more powerful than the Xbox One S, so it's not a question of power.

@silversix_: OG PS4 is being phased out. If Slim doesn't have a 4K Blu-ray player then I cant see it selling for $299.99 given that is how much the XB1 S 500GB costs. $249.99 seems most likely.

You seem to be operating under the assumption that this consumer has already decided to buy a PlayStation console.. In which case, you're right, they'll probably spring for the Neo if they are interested in 4K.. but even then you're still talking about a $100 difference and an extra $100 pricetag still means quite a bit to the vast majority..

A person who isn't planning to buy a 4K TV anytime soon, has no brand bias/loyalty (for either PlayStation or Xbox), and just wants the best value to play the new Madden and Call of Duty will likely be looking at a $299 console.. Do you mean to tell me you think that consumer will ignore the added value of 4K output, an UHD Bluray drive, and HDR if they can essentially get these features for free on the Xbox One S versus the PS4 Slim?.. why?.. "just because"?

Whether you own a 4K TV or not, you may end up buying one at some point.. why not get the functionality that will support that future purchase if you can get it for free?..

I actually agree.. I just don't see why Sony would concede such a marketing advantage to Microsoft.. there's only a few reasons I can think of:

1) Sony wants to provide further differentiators between the PS4 Slim and the PS Neo.. I mean both can use PSVR, so that's a wash.. If they both could also do upscaled 4K gaming with HDR and they both had UHD Bluray drives, that severely limits the purpose of anyone spending the extra money to pick up a Neo from a marketing standpoint.. Sure, nerds like us know that the PS Neo is more powerful but overall, without those strong bullet points to differentiate, the mass market consumer may not see the point of Sony's new console..

Microsoft doesn't have that issue.. the Xbox One S does upscaled 4K gaming while Project Scorpio will be marketed as being able to do native 4K gaming.. The Xbox One S doesn't do VR while Project Scorpio will likely support Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.. Those are bullet points that can be used to drive interest in their new console.. maybe Sony wanted to save a few bullet points for the Neo as well..

2) Microsoft actually surprised Sony by adding 4K output, an UHD Bluray drive, and HDR to their Xbox One S.. it's not out of the realm of possibility that Sony had always planned to simply make a slim version of the PS4 with zero upgrades.. and by the time the Xbox One S was announced, it was too late to go back and make changes..

or 3) the leaked info is fake..

Oh geez it's real. Well let's hope they did add some HDMI 2.0. I'm not getting it anyway. I'd get the NEO before anything else. Hopefully it won't share the same shell.

Boy lemmings are the most hypocrite fanboys on the face of the earth the same buffons who downplayed 1080p for movies and blu-ray last gen when Blu-ray was $1000 on 2006 now use 4k movies and blu-ray as shield and sword...lol

Yes but if you want most games on 1080p you get a PS4 because well the xbox one S still under power vs the PS4.

Upscaling is not the same as native.

But what you people fail to see is how smart sony is,MS has a console that is being market as 4k,it scales games to 4k and play 4k movies,so what is the incentive to get a Scorpio next year for casuals.? Those who only see 4k and nothing more.?

I can see the reasoning behind sony move, want 1080p get PS4 want 4k movies and games get a PS4k..lol

But is funny to see you people holding tied to 4k movies this gen when last gen all you lemmings downplayed blu-ray and claimed it wasn't need it,as the XBOX 360 was for games not movies..hahahahaa

Simple marketing by not making the normal PS4 4k,any one who wishes 4k will get a Neo version,MS try to claim Scorpio was for 4k,but when people jumped on them they backtracked now they have 2 consoles that will be on sale next year with a 4k moniker, and one will be considerably cheaper.

Did you see the video of eurogamer.? They went to the house of the person who has the unit and they confirm is real.

Yes they have in fact more than you think so,as MS try to advertise Scorpio as 4k only and quickly came under fire, and they change the tune and claim it would also be 1080p and that it was up to developers.

You have a console with an identity crisis, the XBOS is being market as 4k capable and so would be scorpio and by late 2017 the price gap between both will be surely $200 minimum and both are 4k capable.

That could hurt Scorpio sales badly.

Yes but VR on PC is ultra expensive $600 dollars man,Vive even worse $800 so most people will not byte on a $600 or $800 add on,even for PS4 which is the cheapest i don't see a bright future.

Now it makes sense that they are selling both the NEO and PS3 at the same time, this will have to be substantially cheaper than the NEO, and the NEO can't be too expensive.

How much smaller than the Xbox Slim is this ^^.

I really hope Microsoft fucks up their Xbox One.Two now, I hope they forget that pricing is everything if they make it too expensive it will bomb no matter the specs.

Nobody is going to give a shit what it looks like at a $249.99 price point. Its low-key design is obviously a cost cutting measure while also letting the Neo shine a little more.

* I said "more future proof".. an Xbox One S with a UHD Bluray drive, HDMI 2.0, HDR support, and 4K upscaling is indeed "more future proof" than a PS4 Slim if it doesn't have any of those features..

* I fully supported Sony including a Bluray drive in the PS3 last gen and predicted that it would be a great value proposition if Bluray won the format wars.. I was right and gladly used the PS3 as both a gaming console and a Bluray player.. I'm simply echoing that ideal by saying that including 4K support on the Xbox One S is a great value proposition versus the PS4 Slim if they are both priced the same at $299..

* I never said 4K upscaled was the same thing as 4K native.. as a matter of fact, I cited that "4K upscaled versus 4K native" will be likely used as a key differentiator when it's time to market Project Scorpio (native 4K gaming) versus both the Xbox One S and the PS Neo (upscaled 4K gaming)..

* apparently when it comes to VR, "cheaper" =/= "better"..

* your meltdown and blind support concerning this news is not only expected, it is welcomed.. thanks for not disappointing..

So does this mean the Slim and NEO announcement killed sales for the PS4 reg? Has the NEO announcement rendered the slim DOA?

@kingtito:

The slim is a replacement for the regular, and apparently the slim is not 4k in any way so it will not kill neo sales in any way.

Is that right? A more powerful PS4 NEO that's supposed to release in a few month isn't going to kill the sales of the PS4 reg or PS4 slim? So you're saying the only reason to get the NEO is for the 4K UHD player?

No they will not launch at the same price dude.

Neo has better graphics or frames at 1080p, but doesnt have a better price also from what it seems the slim ps4 will not be 4k in any way.

I didn't say they were going to launch at the same price. My point is everyone claiming MS killed it's sales of the X1 with the announcement of the X1S and they killed the X1S with the announcement of the Scorpio. It's the same scenario here only the PS4 NEO will be launching in a few month and not 1 1/2 years away. I sense a bit of hypocrisy here

This should be $60 to compete with the upcoming retro mini NES console.

I had to look up who Adam Boyes was and I just found out that he left PlayStation just last month in July. With the PSFugly Slim, underpowered NeO, games like NMS flopping, increase price of PS+, Xbox winning NPD, US getting more Gold medals, I could see why he would get the hell outta there before the year ended. It's been a rough end of summer for them.

In fact that is not even what you argue in the first place, you asked the Slim and neo would kill the regular PS4 sales, when the slim is the regular replacement.

Then you ask if Neo announcement rendered the slim PS4 doa.

Neo is a 4k machine the Slim PS4 is not in any way,the xbox one S is a 4k machine being advertised as 4k capable, scorpio is a 4k machine so basically you have 2 console competing with the same moniker.

In fact the XBO S sales can actually hurt the Scorpios ones as MS will have 2 platforms aimed at 4k owners, but one will be considerably cheaper, most people who don't know will probably see the 2 models as they see models now when they have different HDD,and will probably go for the cheaper one.

Neo and the PS4 are not aimed at the same people, one is 1080p cheaper the other 4k stronger.

Yes that is my argument El Tormented. With the obvious release of a slim and the announcement of the NEO wouldn't that kill the sales of the PS4? Then with the NEO coming out in a few months wouldn't that then kill the sales of the slim? You know the same logic kept trying to use after the Scorpio and S model E3 announcements. You get what I'm trying to say? Probably not since this is Sony now and not MS. For MS any announcement would kill all sales of the current model even if one of those releases is more than 1 year off.

See the hypocrisy El Tormented? I doubt that as well but that's what I'm getting at.

You've seen Morpheus. You know about Neo. What you didn't know is that they've started work on Trinity.

@Shewgenja: I'm sure they are definitely working on a Trinity (PS5).. But the real question is when will they release such a console if they're releasing a Neo this Fall?.. If they launch a PS5 anytime less than 3 years after the release of Neo, that would be business suicide.. Can you imagine the backlash if they release the Neo this Fall and then launch a PS5 less than 1 or 2 years later?..

So realistically, the PS5 will launch 3~4 years from the Neo launch which puts it in the 2019~2020 timeframe.. And all that means that Microsoft will be able to launch another console more powerful than the PS5 about a year or so later in 2020~2021 (which is just a repeat of the scenario we have right now with Scorpio launching after Neo)..

You have to admit that Sony has potentially screwed themselves out of ever having the long term "power advantage" ever again once they decided to put their cards on the table with a Neo that's mostly aimed at pushing PSVR.. Microsoft countered that with a "4K TV friendly" Xbox One S that will be cheaper and on the shelves next to a "4K TV friendly" PS Neo.. Then they dropped the bombshell of a Project Scorpio that will take the title of "most powerful console" for the foreseeable future..

Basically if the PS4 Slim doesn't have 4K playback, then Microsoft just brought the Xbox One back into the conversation from a marketing standpoint as consumers continue to move from 1080p TVs to 4K TVs.. With no 4K on the PS4 Slim and the Neo sitting at a higher price point, it's gonna be interesting to see how the next year or so plays out..

In any case, a PS5 is a non-factor for another 3~4 years unless Sony wants to piss off anybody who buys a PS Neo this fall.. And in that time frame, Microsoft can release another Xbox to trump the PS5 in terms of specs..
