There is no way someone can answer this question with certainty. It will depend on the fanboy goggles they are wearing. Lems will say it's because Sony can't manage stock and cows will say it's because of higher demand.
Aren't they making almost 1.5 million a month to be at the number the have sold now, not to mention they are getting ready for a Japan launch, so I assume they are holding some back for that.
I doubt the number they are producing will change anytime soon.
Based on what I saw today, I would say yes. I grocery shop every thursday. Well today at Walmart, there was 2 X1's (same number that was there last week....same systems?) and no PS4's. Want to know something else weird. The X1 display has a controller and the PS4 display does not. All I can do is watch the video play over and over again. Even though I have 0 interest in the X1, I do think I will play it a bit next week just to test the controller out and see if I want it or just want to stick with my 360 controller for my PC.
Anecdotal as it may be, when I go to stores that carry consoles I see shelves full of XBOs that haven't sold and PS4s that seem to sell out as soon as they come in.
I believe there's a high demand for PS4s and a steep decline in demand for XBOs.
Even with supply constraints, I expect console totals to widen in the coming months.
I can't find one anywhere. Amazon lied and said they had them in stock so I ordered one and they said it would be delivered by the 16th which is today. But when I checked the status it hasn't even shipped yet (probably because they have none are trying to wait for a shipment to make it look like they weren't lying)
The thing is I ordered a week ago and it even said next to the buy link "now in stock." Somebody up in shipping has got a bribe and gave my ps4 to someone else.
So all I have are the games and nothing to play it on. I wanted to have one before I go back to college next week....
It's demand. I originally thought it was a supply issue, but considering 1.2 million more PS4s sold than X1s and that they are still sold out during the same time span--that would mean there is a higher demand for Sony's machine.
It's not only demand, but the fact that the PS4 is available in many more markets than the Xbone. We already know they've moved 40% more consoles, globally, than Microsoft. Sony is also likely gearing up for the launch in Japan.
I've never seen a PS4 in stock in the Indianapolis area.

@Bren128: Not surprising. The XBox 360 was sold out until the end of March 2006. Unit didn't start staying on retail shelves until the first week of April. The same thing will probably happen with the PS4 as well. The Wii stayed SOLD OUT for a full year.

When you have a system as potent and desirable as the PS4, crazy things can happen. It's intoxicating really.

Yeah but on the xbox 360 case it was yield issues not an incredible huge demand,which translated into a 50+% fail rate,the Wii just had a great demand and Nintendo could not keep up,and sony even that it has manufacture more units than Nintendo had for the wii such a short time still also sell out.
MS seems to be able to make to many and Sony not enough , as they both contain of the shelf hardware with no yield issues and at the moment they sell about equal maybe MS could lend poor Sony a hand here .

I do see them all the time numb nuts. I actually walked right into Gamestop and ask if they had any and they said "yep. We usually have them in stock once a week."
I know Sony is the only thing positive going on in your miserable existence but perhaps you should just be glad Sony (And Microsoft) for that matter are getting them into people's hands at a good pace.
Contrary to MS, Sony probably focused its overall stock among other markets that not the US. MS knew US were their biggest market and supplied more stock to the retail stores
