PS4 System Software 4.5 - Now with external HDD support!!

STORY:

Starting today, those of you lucky enough to be chosen for the PS4 system software 4.50 beta (codename Sasuke) trial will be able to get your hands on the new features from the forthcoming update. Keep an eye on your email inbox – if you were chosen, you’ll receive an email with details of how to download the update and get started.

In the meantime, here’s a quick overview of the biggest features coming your way. For this update, we’ve focussed on some of the things that you, the PS4 community, have requested most often – including external HDD support, custom wallpapers and more ways to connect and share with friends.

External HDD support

Struggling to find space for all the games you want to play? Well worry no more; you can now connect a USB 3.0 external HDD and download, save and install games, apps and add-ons directly onto your removable HDD. You can also move any games and apps you’ve already saved onto it to help you stay organised.

When you connect the external HDD, everything will be accessible from your PS4 Home Screen as normal. What’s more, your PS4 will support an external HDD up to 8TB in size, giving you a huge amount of space to play with.

Custom wallpapers

If you’ve captured a truly epic in-game moment with the SHARE button, you can now set it as the background image for your PS4 Home Screen. To make sure the Home Screen icons and text don’t get lost against your new wallpaper, you can tweak the drop shadows and brightness of the menus to keep them clearly visible.

If you’re feeling particularly creative, you can also use SHAREfactory’s Photo Mode to edit your screenshots and make something entirely unique to use as your wallpaper.

Quick menu refresh

System software 4.0 introduced the Quick Menu (accessed in-game when you long-press the PS button on your DUALSHOCK 4) and the latest update further enhances this popular feature to make it even more user-friendly.

The Quick Menu will cover less of the game screen, and you’ll now be able to create, join and manage Parties on the go, meaning you can connect with friends without having to leave the game.

Post status updates to your PlayStation Network activity feed

Just like updating your Facebook status or posting to Twitter, you can now post updates directly to your PSN activity feed. You’ll be able to add simple text updates, tag friends, add screenshots and include specific games, then send your updates to appear in the What’s New section for all your PSN friends to see.

You’ll also be able to send your in-game screenshots to the Live from PlayStation section as a Public Activity, meaning players from around the world can see your best moments as they happen.

3D Blu-ray support for PlayStation VR

If you’re a PS VR owner, you can now use your PS4 to play 3D Blu-ray discs and watch them in stereoscopic 3D via your headset.

Well it only took like what, 3 years? Way to be on top of things Sony! :P Well, better late than never I guess.

Opinions? Good update or not? I know I'll certainly make use of the external HDD support. The rest is somewhat less useful for me.

About damn time, been waiting for external support for the Playstation.

I don't use the internal drive enough to need an external. But good for those that do.

What I am waiting for is video chat support.

Well it's not yet Greatness but at least External HDD can finally be scratched off the long list of things to Await. :P

But seriously a hacked PS2 and a hacked PS3 supported external hard drives which you could pretty much do what you liked with, and the encrypted file system Sony uses should not have any security problems so I don't get why it took so long, obviously it's not gonna be as good speed wise as an internal but it's good enough.

What Sony needs to do next is write a way for people to create programs in a some form even if it disallows access to certain hardware functions so we can have shit like custom media players and simple emulation.

External HDD support is a good thing. It's the main feature I've been wanting them to add.

Great update. Still really want an update to support CDs, if that's possible. I have a ton of CDs I want to put on my PS4.

We've released new versions of the controller and rumble is back!

When I finish a game I delete it.

Now external hard drives are great ? Suddenly it's no longer an incovience to have something else plugged in and taking up space.

I'm actually most excited about the 3D bluray support for PSVR.

I'm pretty happy about this. About 15 months ago I upgraded my launch PS4's HDD to 1TB but I'm already running out of room again. I'm also looking forward to custom wallpapers.

I know it's one of the most often requested features, but not one that I would use. Glad for the others, though. Personally, I'm more hyped for the wallpapers.

Cool I want external assets for mods for Skyrim and Fallout 4 get with the times Sony.

I believe it's the same on Xbox One. You're given an allotted limit there too. It would be great in future but to be fair, mods are just beginning on consoles and there's room to grow. :)

Cool stuff, I enjoy this feature on XOne....plug and play, dump everything on my 4TB drive. They are cheap these days.

Im remembering several threads about this feature in the past though, and many people would come in and say they preferred internal replacement vs external, but imo having the choice is great....there are some people who will prefer external, so this is a good move on Sony's part.

Yeah mods have been awesome the ones I've used anyway. I hope future consoles keep mods in mind and give more freedom.

This is very good news. An external HDD is a very convenient solution, as storage can be expanded by making use of two drives, and saves you the hassle of transferring content.

I wonder about the wallpapers, aside from screen captures, can you simply import any JPG image from your PC, like a custom made Photoshop art?

Good news. Everyone but cows always known that simply officially plugging in an external hard drive onto your console was more convenient than having to swap out the internal hard drive which still have limited space & worrying about what to do with the gutted out internal hard drive & how many times you had to do this & even using adapters at additional cost. Anyway hopefully everything works out after the beta phase. I wouldn't want to be in that beta phase though. I'll wait until they get everything up and running smoothly. It would suck if you run into problems such as your entire gaming library and game saves that you transferred getting corrupted and getting deleted and you have to keep on transferring them again and again. Now hopefully they will allow changing your PSN ID and support backward compatibility! Imagine being able to download and access all those PS+ PS3 games & PS+ PS4 games all on one console.

About time they added external HDD support.

My ps4 still rocking the 512GB hdd it came with and i don't think i have to replace it or get an external one anytime soon.

That 3D video support for PSVR does sound pretty awesome, though. Can anyone who owns one answer me this question: can you stream online 3D content onto the PSVR (as in without a disc or a usb drive or whatever--just straight from the PS4's web broswer)?
