PS4 to support voice recognition, might as well make this camera thing standard.

Isn't just a gimped version of Kinect?

The Kinect gets bashed so hard yet every week it seems the PS4 is emulating another Kinect feature...

With the recent below gif of the seemingly useless use of the PS4 touchpad, pretty soon the PS4 stalwarts will have no room to talk about Kinect.

As if this recently announced feature will be on the Kinects level in this regard anyway...

My God, I'm defending the Kinect rofl...

^wtf?

Meh people used to complain about Live back then too, what's with these third party applications, I don't want netflix in a gaming machine. What's with these achievements and avatars. I want games dammit.

Then PS3 got them too and by that time people actually wanted all of that.

Whoever is the first will meet a resistance. People usually react bad to something that is changing their comfort zone, something they're not used to. After they see the value though, if there is a value they will accept it and want it from the others too and say that thing is a standard now.

The problem with kinect though is that is driving up the price of the console too much.

Clearly Sony wanted to produce an Xbone but couldn't get it all ready for the reveal.

This is hilarious really, they are doing the same thing as last gen, just copying features but making them worse

MS believes that value you speak of is worth it.  I think it may prove to be.

Isn't the Kinect based off of the PSeye toy anyway?
Making it a standard would up the price. You're not giving a good argument why we'd want it as a standard.

No it didn't and neither di that game you posted. Voice recognition has been around for ages now.

Point is voice recognition should be on a console by now mainly because the clunky methods you use to navigate on a console. You're not exactly on the front of a PC with kb/m. Saying "launch x game" is faster than going to your list and scroll down till you find the game you want to launch. Saying "message x" is much faster too and typing the message by just speaking, assuming the tech is good enough beats the crap out of typing with a controller.

That said paying $100 more for that is a bit of a stretch.

the reality here is Kinect ISN'T needed for voice controls. A simple headset will do just fine. And honestly, voice controls are about as useful as kinect gets when it comes to core games. Nobody wants to have to get off the couch while playing halo to wave their arms around like an idiot for some shoehorned body action.

Xbox users didn't ask for the Kinect to be standard.  The company moved in that direction on it's own.

Can you not see the parallels?

It is...inevitable.

It knows when a new player has picked up the controller when you're hosting a local gaming tourney. It can digitally recreate you in create a character games. There are tons of examples of subtle enhancements to the gaming experience the Kinect can do aside from making you audition for a Japanese gameshow.

If the tech is there, why not implement the feature? Even if less than 1% of users will use it, and im sure Sony is aware of that.

Its not mandatory, thats the most important of it.

Never said it did. Just pointing out the foolishness of saying the PS4 copied what is basically software from Kinect, despite the fact it easily predates Kinect and was even used on PS3 games.

I, like most people, have no problem using a d-pad to navigate a GUI. I also don't have an issue with instant gratification so the 2.2 seconds longer it takes me to launch the game with the controller will be no big deal.

Like you said $100 (or $60, in the PS4's case) isn't worth it. I wonder, however, if you'll be able to use a headset for the voice commands. I don;t see why not.

They can and they should however MS wants for it to be this "futuristic" hands free thing where you enter home and as you're changing you say turn on TV, change to x channel or turn on your whatever audio system you have. Kinect can turn on these devices through ir blaster assuming those devices have that functionality.

Having to pick up the headset to do that goes a bit against that efortless controlling of the device.

Sony the king of wasting money. R&D money for research and tech just to have a small percentage of gamers purchase and utilize it? Developers know this and wont waste resources to include anything that utilizes this in their game. It's a waste to not have it mandatory or don't do it at all.

That's not my point though, it's eventually going to be a standard feature, the platform is moving in that direction.

It's all about the paradime shift.  Nobody bashed Kinect for inventing something, they bashed it bacause it became standard.

You honestly think it'll be any different with Kinect just because it's being bundled with the console? I mean, how often does the Wii U pad get utilized by developers other than Nintendo? From what I've seen, and heard, not much.

On SW? Every day. I still think most people would rather not have the camera at all rather than have it mandatory. Those camera's are expensive. And with a bad track record.

You're comparing what was meant to be a crucial aspect of the XBone to tertiary aspects of the PS4 that Sony has included peripherally--as in not required for the system to function.

You're overreaching quite a bit. It's rather silly.

Maybe I'm honestly delusional but I see the Kinect not being seen as a negative anymore after about a year and a half. The perception of it's capabilities has been skewed by all the America's Funniest Home Video gag reels on youtube. It has a lot of practical, non-intrusive potential.

Technically the Kinect isn't required either and compared to the pounding the Kinect and other functions like TV interactivity have recieved here on SW, my post was rather mild.  Nevertheless, my post rings true.

legitimate tv streaming vs a HIGHLY advertised feature that is basically just using technology you already have, but connecting it and using it through the xbox to use more electricity. I wonder why people make fun of the tv on the xbox. It would be a lot better if a standard cable box wasn't required, but it is, so why not just change the tv input for when you want to watch tv and leave the xbox off during that time?

But people are being forced to pay for it. Even if the product isn't playing that big a role in the xbox anymore after the backpedal, it's still being shoved down the throat of the consumer. The same can't be said for PSEye.

So?  Kinect isn't optional.  It's shoved in our faces by Microsoft.   Not to mention brings the price up $100.

So?  Kinect isn't optional.  It's shoved in our faces by Microsoft.   Not to mention brings the price up $100.

Thank you Sony for allowing us to choose.

Why do we all asusme it brings the price up by $100? Maybe sans Kinect the console is $429 and the "bundle" is prorated?

People still not reading the thread... This is about the eventual changing on the business model of the Sony platform. All these options will eventually become either extinct or mandatory. Like every other console "innovation" in the last 25 years.

PS4 spin doctors incoming in 3.....2.....1.... Oh hello nathandrakeswag! Hi there davekeeh!! Wait before you get started let me guess. It's still optional and not forced like Kinect right? See to me this just seems like more Sony BS. Like usual they tout the PS4 as this almighty, perfect system, but then they "sneak" in stuff like this and hope it just gets swept under the rug by it's minions..(see names listed above). My question is if the tech is there, why aren't you advertising it? Seems pretty shady to me, but I'm sure that because Sony is doing it, it is the greatest thing ever!!

So you don't think devs are going to be questioning Sony as to why these capabilities weren't brought to their attention? Maybe there is a reason why Kinect is packed in and the PSEye is not. Maybe the PSEye isn't up to snuff and they know that because MS spent a ton of money perfecting motion gaming they know their equipment ins't good enough to compete. So Sony is covering up their second rate motion peripheral by making it "optional"! Oh and don't even try and say that Sony doesn't care about motion gaming, because I had to sit and watch SOOOOOOooooooooomany dumb commercials about the MOVE.

So Kinect invented voice recognition now?

TheGrat1

I don't get this either.  Isn't Kinect about reading body movements?

I see voice recognition already all over the place, particularly in cell phones and cars.  It's not MS tech, and definitely not Kinect.

Most people don't care at all about the motion gaming aspect. This isn't about Move either (which is better than Kinect for many reasons). This is just like with the wiimote, with people confusing the IR pointer with motion sensing. People are now marrying voice recognition with motion sensing. Makes equally no sense.

People, people. The implications aren't about(for the fourth time) who invented what. It's about who made what standard and who is on their way to standardizing it. Who invented the tech is IRRELEVANT to the point.

Excpet  the touchpad and camera are options not forced on to the consumer. It is required you buy Kinect for an ectra $100 there's a difference. Also, the toucapd has potential for more controller options in traditional gaming, If done right it can go futher than what kinect is doing.

;)

If you want kudos from a Playstation 3 owner, I can give it. I really liked the voice recognition stuff the 360 was doing, particularly with Skyrim, but I was really impressed with the voice recognition stuff being used to communicate with the console on the XB1.  That aspect was not done first on an xbox platform.  It is a utility function moreso than a gaming one, and was made standard in phones for use in cars.

What I was talking about, what I don't like, is for voice recognition to be called Kinect because Kinect is total garbage. Kinect is motion sensing.  It was brought to mass market to compete with the wii.

Even in this thread, the guy I was quoting was talking about motion gaming, when the issue was voice recognition.  TC made a thread about voice recognition, and yet s/he suggests that Sony make a CAMERA standard.

This is the wii all over again.  I hated the motion sensing, but loved the IR pointer.  They aren't the same!

Gimped version of Kinect or not It optional.

Optional >>>>>>> Manditory for gimp tech that no-one wants.

...then be prepared to see 2 types of PS4 games, "core" games and "Only for PS EYE!" games. At least Xbox is free from the "Kinect lineup."

Did you just crawl out from under a rock yesterday and just start gaming or something. You seem pretty ignorant to how things work. They will make one copy of the game and put control options in for the normal controller and the Eye Toy if they even care to have Eye Toy features. What they will not do is make two versions of the game. Nothing will change from current gen in that regards.
