Poll PS4 VR win on price and accessibility? (45 votes)

PS4 wins 44%
PC based VR will win 56%

According to The Guardian, it will cost a months rent in London, your own head-phones and a 1000+ PC to even rake the minimum specs.

It seems like the PS4 VR will be cheaper as well as more accessible.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/29/htc-vive-vr-headset-price

"HTC’s Vive virtual reality headset finally has a UK price: a hefty £689.

So, what do you get if you splash out a month’s rent (in London at least)? There’s the headset itself, co-created by gaming company Valve, which has two 1080 x 1200 screens offering a 110-degree viewing area, as well as a front-facing camera for augmented reality features and a plethora of other sensors for head- and motion-tracking.

The headset also comes with three apps: the tongue-in-cheek “Job Simulator”; Northway Games’ Fantastic Contraption, a 3D VR update of an old Flash-based physics game; and the Google-developed Tilt Brush, which lets you paint in 3D space.

Unlike the Facebook-owned Oculus, which retails for $600 (without a specific UK price), the Vive will also ship with two wireless VR controllers, and “room-scale” movement sensors, capable of tracking an area 5 sq m. The Oculus, with its more stripped-back offering, comes with an Xbox 360 controller – although the Oculus Touch controllers will be arriving later this year – and a movement set-up that can handle a 1.5m by 3m area. The Oculus does, however, include built-in audio while the Vive will require a separate pair of headphones.

Despite the eye-watering price, ownership of a VR headset alone is not enough to play around in virtual worlds. Both the Oculus and Vive require a top-end gaming PC to run, with graphics cards (GeForce GTX 970 or higher) and CPUs (an Intel i5-4590 or better). The Vive can slink by on slightly less RAM than the Oculus (4GB compared to 8GB required by the latter) and only monopolises one USB 2.0 port rather than three USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0, but those minimum specs are a hard minimum. In practice, most will end up buying or building a dedicated PC for VR, which will add another £750-£1,000 on the price. And next month, the final contender in the three-way bout for VR dominance will be arriving, as Sony lifts the lid on its Playstation VR system. A very different proposition, the VR will work with the company’s PS4 console, rather than requiring a gaming PC.

HTC being HTC, there’s one final bonus to having a Vive: the ability to make phone calls, read text messages and check calendar events without taking off the headset. Which seems unlikely to sway many, to be honest.

The Vive is available to pre-order from Monday 29 February, and will be arriving in homes from 5 April."

Playstation 4 can't even handle Battlefield 4 at 1080p rez

no way in hell it'll handle any VR without massive graphical downgrades, even with the stupid box you attach.. all the shit shown at e3 was trash.

I hope it doesn't flop.. because I don't think Sony can take any more flops.

Not interested in VR.

And if it coast more than $100 -$150 its automatically gonna be Sony's worst flop ever. Worse than PSP GO

Isn't it going to cost as much as the console itself? How is that a hit? Unless it will also work with the ps5 it's too expensive for a console peripheral

PS VR needs a whole separate box to help with processing. It has to be more expensive. If it were cheaper, I'd be worried about the quality of the device.

I'll think I'll wait till next year to get into VR. Let the test dummies do the work for you so you won't have to spend a dime if this VR fails.

PS4 will probably win out in price and accessibility seeing as its made for a single system and has less features than Vive or Rift. The better quality experience will probably be on pc though

PSVR is definitely gonna be cheaper and more accessible. No way it will cost more than the PS4 itself, that would be idiotic on Sony's part if it is.

PSVR More accessible? Probably. Because you need a console instead of a hefty gaming PC to run it

Am i interested in any VR? Nope.

People voting that PC VR's will win on PRICE AND ACCESSIBILITY are dumb as all Hell.

You're talking about a $600-$800 VR headset on top of a PC that's already striking into quadruple digits. Yes, you can go cheaper by building your own PC, but that is not an option that any kind of mass market can take, and you're still shooting way above PSVR.

The very worst case scenario put out for PSVR so far is that a total, all-in package of PS4 + VR is going to be around $800, possibly even less.

That's $800 all-in for PSVR vs $1,600-$1,800 for PC VR.

For a LOT of people its going to be even more skewed. There are 45 million PS4's out in consumer's hands right now. The PSVR on top of that will probably only be an additional $300-$500.

There are NOT many people out there who have PC's that meet even the minimum specs for the Vive or Occulus.

You can definitely argue that the Vive and Occulus will be HIGHER QUALITYproducts than the PSVR, but arguing that they're also more accessible to a mass market is absolutely retarded. Its like arguing that a Bentley Mulsanne is more price friendly and accessible than a Honda Civic.

To be fair, there's really two ways to interpret the question. Is it which wins at being most cost effective and accessible, or is it a matter of sales (with the PS VR being boosted by a lower price and greater accessibility)?

What in the hell does "win on price" mean? Lower? This tech is expensive and just having a low price and taking a loss isn't necessarily a "win." The Oculus and Vive are being sold at cost. That means the PSVR will be around $400 and a cheap/inferior product OR Sony is losing its ass off the sale of the hardware. And a loss on hardware is the last thing Sony needs right now. "Winning price" may end up meaning "going bankrupt" if you are just referring to low balling the competition.

Sony should have skipped VR

I don't know about you, but I want a proper VR experience. Have you seen some of the PSVR titles that are coming out? That's Wii level games right there although they're in 1080p, meh.

I can't afford a 800€ headset + the upgrades it would take to make my PC capable of playing some decent looking games in VR so... no VR for me :(

If i had more disposable income then I could be temped by VR as a fun shiny new (albeit risky) toy. However PSVR is clearly going to be an inferior product to meet a lower price point.

If im going to early adopt new tech I expecting teething problems but I wouldnt intentionally choose the inferior product.

Id be interested to see how many PS owners would happily pay 350-400 dollars for a sub par expereince (compared to offerings on PC)

I imagine it will be like Kinect. The hardware will sell insanely well at first but developers won't really know what to do with it. Though at least it might get watered down PC ports, so it will be better than kinect in that sense.

Of coure it will, Oculus and Vive already priced themselves out of any kind of "win" scenarios.

Its a shame that PS VR will be the only peripherial that actually pushes VR.

Now we wait till Oculus and Vive owners start to beg for PS VR scraps, lol.

That begs the question, is PSVR vs Occulus or the Vive more similar to the Honda Civic vs Bentley comparison or a McDonalds vs Steak and Red Wine comparison?

Perfectly fine vs exceptional?

Or Cheap crap vs Exceptional?

Most of the preliminary opinions and reviews on the PSVR so far are that its fine. Its a 4-door sedan. Its a Cruiz, or a Civic, or a Sonata. Its fine. Definitely not the most amazing thing ever, but its fine. Its the only thing that's going to be approachable to the mass market and not also suck.

The McDonalds comparison is probably better saved for comparing Gear VR to Occulus or the Vive. That thing is more like a smartcar, or some crappy eastern european knockoff.

Sure, PSVR is cheaper and more accessible than the HTC Vive.

In other news, Nintendo's Virtual Boy is also cheaper and more accessible than the HTC Vive.
