Thoughts, SW? Are you excited for PS5 in 2025? Looks like we’ll be getting some great games for the system in 2025 and beyond!

Excited? By them saying they will make more SP games? LOL

You'd think them making more SP games would be a given.. Sure doesn't take much for a Sony fanny to shill.

@ghostofgolden: Most people buy a Switch to play kids games not a PS5.

@SolidGame_basic:So shipped = sales now? oh and Death Stranding is NOT a Sony game since the first game just dropped on Xbox.

Some additional stats for those interested.

Q2 YoY:

Revenue: +12%

Profit: +184%

Hardware units: -22%

Hardware revenue: -24%

Game Software Units: +15%

First Party Software Units: +13%

Game Software Revenue: +28%

Content & Services Revenue: +28%

Monthly Active Users: +8%

---

AI says ...

Overall, despite a decline in hardware metrics, significant gains were observed in game software and services, along with a substantial rise in revenue and profit. 📈

---

Some quotes w/ additional context

- Total play time also increased 14% compared to the same month last year and 11% on a cumulative basis since the beginning of the current fiscal year compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year, demonstrating steady growth for the platform

- PS Plus is providing a stable base of earnings as sales on a U.S. dollar basis increased 18% year-on-year. This is due to an increase in ARPU (average revenue per user) primarily resulting from a shift to higher tiers of service and the impact of price revisions.

- As for third-party software, sales significantly grew due to contributions from solid franchise titles as well as hit new IP, including a new sports title and an action RPG title from China.

- Astro Bot, released on September 6, has received a Metacritic score of 94 and has garnered high praise from the gamer community. It is a hit which has sold over 1.5 million copies in the nine weeks since its release.

- 37% of the users who purchased Astro Bot had not purchased a firstparty title from us in the last two years

- The percentage of younger age groups and families purchasing the title was much higher than other titles, and the title is contributing significantly to a widening of the user base through the acquisition of new users and the expansion of our title portfolio.

- We launched two live service games this year. Helldivers 2 was a huge hit, while Concord ended up being shut down. We gained a lot of experience and learned a lot from both.

- We intend to share the lessons learned from our successes and failures across our studios, including in the areas of title development management as well as the process of continually adding expanded content and scaling the service after its release, so as to strengthen our development management system.

- We intend to build an optimal title portfolio during the current midrange plan period that combines single-player games, which are our strength, and which have a higher predictability of becoming hits due to our proven IP, with live service games that pursue upside while taking on a certain amount of risk upon release.

- Starting with Ghost of Yōtei, which is a sequel to the smash hit Ghost of Tsushima, we plan to continue releasing major single-player game titles every year from next fiscal year onwards.

Where is Sony’s strategy, if their 94% meta rated single player game is only selling 1.5m copies? If Concorde was such an unexpected flop and Helldivers 2 an equally unexpected success?

Hit and miss strategies like this very rarely stand the test of time.

Quick and dirty math:

So Astrobot was a 90 million success

And Concord was a 300 million failure

CEO's are right: live service are a money drainer.

^ This is a net positive across the board.

Re: Live Services:

A successful live service game benefits their business more than a failed one harms it.

Their live service games are net new investments to their bottom line; ex. a God of War bombing would be 10x worse than Concord.

@SolidGame_basic: its good that astrobot is doing well, since nintendo has been milking mario to no end, and someone needs to bring them down a peg. More single player games, is good, but they didn't say they would go away from live service either. One thing they didn't mention is remasters...how many more remasters of remasters of remasters will sony keep pumping out.

@Archangel3371: " Feel like Astro Bot should have sold more."

Proves why Sony needs to expand beyond PlayStation.

Astro Bot is a game that's intended to fill in the gaps and it seems to be doing just that.

From Sony:

- 37% of the users who purchased Astro Bot had not purchased a first party title from us in the last two years

- The percentage of younger age groups and families purchasing the title was much higher than other titles, and the title is contributing significantly to a widening of the user base through the acquisition of new users and the expansion of our title portfolio.

---

Finding new users for their first party content on their console is *very* good news.

1.5 million sales in 2 months is a solid launch for a new platformer on a single platform. Platformers tend to have strong legs and keep selling for years, so expect its lifetime sales to multiply over time.

Not sure how that pertains to the point that is made. There are plenty of games that sell well on one system.

@SolidGame_basic: sure, back when games didn't cost ungodly amounts of Money to make.... It's still very likely that Mario games don't cost 350 million dollars to make like say, spider man 2.... The Mario brand recognition, being the king of gaming, along with responsible development costs should be able to keep Nintendo games on Nintendo....

But Sony? Microsoft? I don't see it happening much longer. It's not cost effective to cut out gamers. They don't make fiscally responsible games and they don't have Nintendo's install base, nor a franchise in Mario's rhelm.

Just like others have said, Astro Bot deserves to sell much more as it was a well-done platformer. It was shockingly great.

Sony should have ported Astro Bot to the Switch like they did with the LEGO Horizon Adventure game. Would have probably sold a whole lot more. Maybe they still might. They do seem to be branching out much more these days. 🤔

STFU, Xbot. Time aligned PS4 already was at 200$, while PS5 is over 500$. Also, PS5 is just around 2 millions behind.

Calm your tits and learn to be nice to others.

Being nice to liars, pretenders? Nope

Looks who is talking. I'm glad that Xbox hardware in on life support. Xbots only deserve shit after shit after shit.

Wow, hardware is down another 22%. PS seems to be fumbling at every corner.

Dat damage control skills is amazing!!!

Tell me about it! That damn hidden fact!

What corner does the ps seems to be fumbling at?

Closing studio after studio, hardware sales dropping like flies, games flopping so hard they get removed from the market in 11 days, no sign of first party developed games and going 3rd party. THAT corner.

1. I’ll give you the closing of studios, but it isn’t that big of a deal since most of the studios they close wasn’t or haven’t produced anything worthwhile in recent times.

2. Since you clearly stated “games” which other games have did this besides Concord?

3. Sony isn’t worried about producing 1st party because they simply don’t have to now. They’re getting extremely little to no competition from Microsoft and GP isn’t propelling the Xbox over the ps as of yet.

4. They might’ve embraced the 3rd party route but they still see that they have a console to fully support, and not like MS who treats the Xbox like an irrelevant piece of hardware.

I tend to default towards optimism when it comes to gaming--this is a fun, light-hearted hobby to me and while I am passionate about gaming, it's not something I get upset about too much--but honestly if I was a Sony fan I would not expect much from 2025 given how 2024 went.

Sony would need a real "come to Jesus" moment, admit how much they fouled up, and then talk about course correction. Instead all I've heard is them doubling down and staying the course.

Also the whole "medium term" thing about single-player and and live-service is ambiguous; first off, how long is "medium term?" And second, what's after medium-term? They transitioning solely to live-service? Is the single-player focus just a stop-gap measure to bide time and keep the fans suckling at the teat so they can be drip-bled dry later with microtransactions?

Sony is on its way to becoming the hardware equivalent of Ubisoft; mismanaged and failing upwards until the reckoning comes and hits them on the head.
