No. This is terrible. We're fast approaching a time when games are going to take an average of 7 - 10 years to develop. There is a downside to hardware becoming more powerful.

  1. This is pure speculation (though not necessarily false.)
  2. You rush to the conclusion that MS would be at a disadvantage, as they'd most likely use the same media format, or something similar.
  3. Remember that OnLive was the inception of PSNow, which Sony seems to be heavily invested in.

Your inability to draw conclusions from actual data is just astounding. Literally, there should be studies done on your conclusion from "evidence."

Still sony will be the savior of gaming again if they keep physical media alive while others trying to dismantle it. It will be like e3 2013 all over again with the guy trading discs hand to hand while they still have the biggest streaming games service PS NOW which is crushing google and xcloud

If, if, if... Counterpoint: MS would be the saviour of gaming if they keep physical media alive, whilst Sony utilizes their PSNow platform to go entirely streaming. See the idiocy of that point? It's about as likely to happen as the sun going supernova tomorrow.

The irony being, metered internet plans would get rekt if games balloon to 120GB+ So, the clock may well reset back to physical distribution.

This is why we need competition within the ISP sector. The US is light years ahead of Canada, even given some companies being so horrendous (Verizon.) Cogeco only took a significant leap forward a few years ago due to government intervention IIRC. Bell and Cogeco have a stranglehold over areas (mine with Cogeco,) but Cogeco finally stepped their game up a few years ago... Now in a semi-rural area, I get 120Mb/S download, which was a big step over what we had roughly 6-8 years ago. In the GTA, Cogeco are hitting the 250Mb/S-1Gb/S range.

You realize that Xbox is already using a 4K Bluray Drive, and likely will use as good as drive on next Xbox.

Is every random news about domination, or do you actually even care about the any improvements to PS4.

A higher capacity blu-ray disc for next gen is great news for everyone. RDR2 proves this. Games will only get bigger and thus more space is needed.

This is more due to the size of disc, but at the end of the day, you're 100% right as nothing precludes MS from using the same disc. Whilst Sony was a part-developer of BR, they aren't the sole-owner, and MS pays royalties for the discs... Just like Sony pays royalties to MS for codecs/etc that MS owns. At the end of the day, all competing companies are in bed with one another in some sense.

I wonder how much difference in expense, time, packaging for just printing 2 current gen BDs and use those double sided cases.

Anyway if Sony and MS are gonna eat the cost of the drive and optical disc, that'd be great.

Depends on the size of the HDD that they include as minimum. Personally hope they increase to 2TB or more for next gen.

While we seen several current-gen consoles offering 1TB, but even so, 1TB wasn't enough for some due to massive HDD in games now, even Red Dead Redemption 2 requires over 100GB, so yeah, console makers need to start going with 2TB as the norm for next-gen consoles.

Edit: I upgraded my PS4 to an SSD 1TB and I can say it's almost full and I went digital this gen anyways.

They haven't even embraced uhd drives, they're not suddenly going to embrace physical discs, when they're dying out....

This ^^ is a joke it was MS during the xbox 360 generation who hiked the Price of games by $10 from $50 to $60 while using the same DVD format the PS2 made standard,PS3 games were also $60 even that they were blu-ray on a time where a blank Blu-ray disc for consumers was $25 dollars and with that you could buy 50 dual layer DVD.

Also is not like $80 dollar games are something unheard of in the industry,i payed that for MK2 and SF2 on Snes and several others, and special edition games cost more than that for some stupid extra.

Bigger worlds happen with bigger workforce and iterative asset design, not storage space.

N64 and floppy disk PC games tended to have far bigger worlds than PS1 games despite having a fraction of the storage space.

Because it's increasing our costs on storage? will this new drive be more expensive than the standard ones for very little gain? Why am I putting up with 80-100GB installs for games that are typically quite small because the developer wants to pass the compression costs onto the consumer?

There is NO benefit to us, they will have to do it for the Switch regardless, they should be doing it as a standard. Steam/Sony/Microsoft need to set some standards for this because its getting out of hand.

Doesn't matter how big the discs are if you still have to do full game installs anyway. Im more concerned about next-gen hard drive space. With games reaching 100GB now they better be at least 2TB standard.

Disc storage on consoles became irrelevant when mandatory installs became standard on consoles.

Also, you guys need to understand how having a disc that large affects the system as a whole.

From install times (which, again, makes disc irrelevant), to load times, to system bandwidth.

Also, with large installs you would need a good CPU and fast RAM to chew through that data.

It would be atrocious on a standard HDD, you would need an SSD to get load times within reason.

Discs that large would be a detriment to consoles.

I would only buy digital if there was no physical version. Cuphead, and some PSVR games, everything else I own digitally has been an XBL/PSN freebie. I see it as getting something for my money, as opposed to nothing. I don't understand why anyone would prefer digital, then again I don't really understand the world at all anymore. People are crazy in 2018.

And yet Sony doesn't include a UHD drive with any Playstation console this gen. The Xbox One X already has games over 100GBs this gen such as Halo 5 and the new Red Dead will be over 100 GBs. If you think 4k games with huge file sizes are impressive, no need to wait for next gen. Just pick up an X!

What they should do is have the drive external, no need to have it internal since more and more people download games. Just have it as a 50 dollar option.

I just hope they have some sort of fast internal SSD drive for caching the game or games you are currently playing, and a standard HDD for the rest of the games.

Bring it.

I've got plenty of space on my SSDs and they are getting cheaper every day.

Discs are noisy and slow. I'd prefer a console without a disc drive entirely. Just like none of my computers have had disc drives since... who knows? ...it's been a while.

Plus: In a world where devs can't even finish the game by the time the discs are made and require gigantic day-one patches, what is the point?

Then again Sony seems to suck at the digital distro.... so....

For people with data caps, they should release physical discs that include a code. That code is tied to the account. After full install from disc, the disc is no longer needed, and can't be traded in or gave to a friend. Basically the same as digital but without the download. People are gonna say this sounds stupid, but that's exactly what digital is. I use it for the convenience factor. Digital is rarely cheaper than physical, especially when you consider a $60 game can be played for a month and sold for $40 making the game cost $20, whereas digital, there's no cash back for games rarely played or not wanted. I'll relate a story from a few years ago: my friend bought uncharted 4 for $60. Played a month and was done with it. Sold it to me for $30. I played for a month and sold it to a local game store for $28 cash. So I got the experience for $2. Point, there's definitely a benefit to go physical right now, but if companies are smart, they will do what I said earlier and give a one time use code that stays with your account forever. Yeah, this is that horrible DRM thing everyone hated, but that's what every digital purchase is already, and people on here seem to love it, as do I because I'm lazy lol.

@djoffer: If your idea of getting with the times is downloading 120GB games then I laugh at you. This takes the ball right out of digitals court for the vast majority of console gamers worldwide. This means that physical diatribution will be the times for well over a decade when it hits. Retail stores and even onpine retail will gladly cosign.

Should someone let the TC, and the author of that article know that consumer BDXL discs and players have been around for years? This isnt some new Sony invention. Theyve been around for almost a decade lol. And they predate the current gen consoles.

I was more surprised that PS4 and Xbox One werent using them when they were announced.
