would you mind if sony started charging 5 bucks for 12 months of psn. Not to profit but just to make psn more stable for things like future cross game chat and other online services. Buying downloadable games and booster packs, addons and updates would remain free

FOR people saying it should be free KEEPING PSN ONLINE COST MONEY YA KNOW. 5 bucks would just be for helping to help making the service a bit more stability and better become a bit better PLUS sony would be more proactive with the service because it cost money. AND ONLINE SHOULD COST MONEY NOT TO MAKE PROFIT.

Exactly. Its the principle of the matter. You give them 5, they'll want 10. You give them 10, they'll want 20 and so on and so forth.

I'd be really angry but I guess I'd have to pay it. I don't own a 360 based on principle (and the fact that I don't have money for both). Also I'd switch a lot of my gaming for PC games and see if I could do without the PS3 online

Online gaming should be free. I would pay but only because it would be the cheaper of the two console online prices. It's the principle at stake! Don't let M$ set the standard to being forced to pay to play online.

So you go to a store, someone asks if you want a free candy bar as a part of a promotional offer... You would say no, and just pay for it? :? Wow, you continue to confuse me with your posts.

50 dollars sounds like a rip off but serves cost money but online servers and services cost money to maintaining and for just 5 bucks it would still be a very good deal. To increase the stability of the service even tho sony would still be paying money out of there own pockets still.

Why should a service that costs money to operate be free?

ask the people who have maintained profitable companies with a free online service. You pay for the servers with the purchase of the game. Starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo were free to play online, had a seperate service from the rest of the internet. and Blizzard remains one of the best companies out there even before WoW was in the picture. Paying for a MMO and paying for online service even after the fact that you pay for the internet is a different matter.

Because online gaming uses P2P network, meaning it's using your internet connection that you already pay a monthly bill for. Dedicated servers is a different story.

SONY would make no money off the 5$ and it would go towards stricly making the service better. Theirs no reason these people have to offer us online to begin with when they pay for it.

you payed for the game not the service that connects you to other users. Online should cost money but sony is being nice but the result is a harder to maintain service. 5 bucks gives them just a bit for helping to maintain the service and make it more stable .

You don't need a server for peer to peer, you just need a program. Live is the program. Just picture live as a big hamachi or a gaming limewire. This is what I know of course, if it is different tell me.

because free online has been done for years and years, and they've offered it free for so long, which just goes to show that they are able to offer it for free. If they really needed the money to maintain the service, then they should have asked for it from the beginning.

It's more then just P2P. Live offers a slew of features along with On-line play. Just to name a few are leader boards, the infamous match making, and in-game chat. All these use dedicated servers to enable thier use in game. So, you get more for your money then just on-line play. Besides your money does bring features to those with silver accounts. Like the avatars in NXE. I don't mind paying the extra money as long as there is a benefit of a more stable Live with more features for both Silver and Gold members. PSn is a decent on-line service, I don't like Home, so we will leave that one alone. It's just not as good as the Live service. IMO Live is so much better then PSn, and easier, that I think PSn would benefit from a small fee.

They give most of those free hence why I said most is included in silver accounts. 50 is basically paying for matchmaking and online. If i remember you don't even need gold to download NXE or have avatars.

There aren't any servers to tell peers to other peers, it's more like a client and it doesn't cost money, it's a middle-man that essentially holds/moves IP's around which anything can do really, if you've ever used torrents before it's the same thing with those clients, file sharing programs etc.

Considering how much better XBL is than PSN, no I wouldn't mind spending a few extra bucks if they planned to fix PSN up a bit with it.

I don't really have a problem with it, I pay for world of warcraft after all, but the justification for live fees is funny sometimes, when most people could just say * I like the service*

Nobody cares about any of that crap except people looking to justify spending 50 bucks. We just want to play online, and P2P online gaming should be free. Free Dedicated Servers is a great privilege that Sony is giving us.

Did you read my post? They don't give in-game chat away in silver acounts. or leader boards, plus a few others. I said for your money silver members also benefit from additions such as avatars in NXE. never said avatars were only for gold members. Silver members also benefit from gold member fee's. Siver does have Chat, but you have to have Gold, obviously to have in-game chat, which is a lot more resource intensive then just chat. Plus, all of this is a lot more stable and works with every game, so every one benefits, silver and Gold members alike. This costs money.

Does peer to peer cost MS any money? I'm just wondering because everything else is included in silver accounts or so I'm told.

Nobody cares about any of that crap except people looking to justify spending 50 bucks. We just want to play online, and P2P online gaming should be free. Free Dedicated Servers is a great privilege that Sony is giving us.

I catre about in game chat, leaderboards, and matchmaking.. as well as cross game invites... But hey.. if you don't need it, thats cool for you. But I like it, so I pay for it. If you don't like it, then don't pay for it and be quiet.. You shouldn't whine about something you don't pay for and you shouldn't pay for something you don't like.

A lot of people care about that Crud, who are you to speak for everyone? And, Yes, free dedicated servers are a great privelge that Sony is giving us, I will not argue with that. It's just that PSn could be so much better. Live is a more stable and unified service then PSn, by miles IMO. And this is one reason why most of my on-line gaming is done on Live.

[QUOTE="angry_fork"][QUOTE="dotWithShoes"][QUOTE="angry_fork"] Because online gaming uses P2P network, meaning it's using your internet connection that you already pay a monthly bill for. Dedicated servers is a different story.

And theres no servers to tell those peers what the other peers IP's are so they can connect? Those servers don't exist and cost no money at all?

There aren't any servers to tell peers to other peers, it's more like a client and it doesn't cost money, it's a middle-man that essentially holds/moves IP's around which anything can do really, if you've ever used torrents before it's the same thing with those clients, file sharing programs etc.

And the tracker for the torrent does exist on a server somewhere?

PSN has in-game chat, most online games have leaderboards, and matchmaking? seriously? Cross-game invites PSN doesn't have yet but that's not worth 50 bucks sorry. If it is for you then you have low standards.
