Although PSN still runs at a loss, PSN generated nearly twice the revenue in 2010. ~434M USD in 2009.

XBL generated 1.2B USD in 2009 .... nearly three times as much as PSN in 2009.

PSN is expected to become profitable next year. Probably due to PSN Plus.

Hirai said he expects PSN to reach 3.6B USD in 2012. PSN also has 60 million registered accounts.

How on earth is PSN losing money? It provides very few dedicated servers, and the rest of it is pretty much used to match make and sell content. How is this possible?

Maybe they should stop using dedicated servers? I mean cheap-ass MS uses P2P that's why they generate more profit from their service, Sony should too but the difference will be they wont make us pay for crappy servers unlike MS. If it does the job it does the job... I think. lol

Still impressive though for a free service. They could always use cheapo P2P networking like M$$ does but they won't.

OK....there's 2 problems with this

1. We don't know that they've made 868 million dollars on PSN becaue we don't know what the term nearly twice actually means.

2. Sony's fiscal year isn't done yet and won't be over until Midnight, April 1, 2011.

Why because they refuse to pass the bill to us.? They could do better but it would probably mean a yearly fee.

Why do you want Sony to charge us to play games online....Games that we've already paid for?

Why do you want Sony to be as greedy to its customers as Microsoft?

Sony would be dead in the water if they charged a monthly fee for an inferior service. One of the only benefits the PS3 has over the X360 is its free online and I dont even see that as a benefit because Id rather pay 13 cents a day for XBL than 0 cents for PSN

*charlie the unicorn blue unicorn voice* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO don't tell them that! its a fact that all psn servers are dedicated every single game, they have a billion server farms all over the globe, with fiber optic 8 billion gigabyte connections available on each....On xbox live they have 1 single 28 baud modem serving up the data, one data center with one single server on the moon..... *sarcasm*

I rather not pay for online play period,ms did not even try and went for a fee out of the gate, funny thing is that if thete is a company that can take a hit a give free online is ms because it has deeper pockets than sony. That say if I had to pay for a service I would do so for live.

Actually that make sony and psn look even better, sony doesn't have as deep pockets as ms yet still they refuse to charge, how can any one see that as bad,and see ms charge as good or the correct thing to do,is beyon logic every one should be kissing sony's feet,ms has done nothing this gen but over price everything gaming, from games to peripherals, and some how that is good. Is like having 2 friends one that treat you good and care for you,and another that kick you every time he has a change a treat you like dirt, yet you defend your bad friend, and kick the living crap of the one that threat you good.

Maybe they respect their customers :P its like the thing with WoW where cataclysm got a lower mark because they released most of the benefits for free. I thought that was ludicrous. Its obvious the improvements to the graphics and all that jazz were meant to go with cataclysm, but instead of making it only for ppl with the expansion, blizzard decided to give it to everyone. Its like not being a greedy bastard is looked down upon.

Putting 100,000s Gigabytes worth of data and allowing 60 millions people to download it over the internet cost quite a bit of money

all your sign in servers, matchmaking servers, download servers... these are all physical components that cost money... and every byte of data transfered incurs a bandwidth cost. And they are maintained and operated by people that are paid salaries. Anytime you get a new feature on PSN, it was programmed by a team of programmers being paid a salary.

These things cost money... if they dont make enough money to offset these costs.... then they operate at a loss.

So lets say you have been gaming online for years now... and have never paid for any DLC.... but have been downloading free demos and such... you are costing sony money for all this activity, but you arent contributing a dollar to them for it. That means, they lose money.

EDIT: here is a more easily understood example... lets say you have a problem with your PSN account. So you call their toll free number and talk to a person... and they fix your problem. That guy on the phone is being paid money to answer your call, but you are not paying any money to have your call answered. So sony, loses money when you make that call about your PSN account.

Pretty impressive generating that much money seeing as PSN is literally infinitely cheaper than Xbox live. Why are people still paying for Xbox Live?

I fully expect my PS3's online to continue to be free and up and running for this entire generation.

Are you suggesting it will be otherwise?

Yeah..but so what?

I mean, not only was a PS3 approx $900 to make, which meant Sony was giving its users a bargain.....

But again so what? If I went around bringing up stats and figures from 2006 and 2007 when its almost 2011.....I might be a ridiculous fanboy.

I may be a fanboy, but certainly not a ridiculous one.

At the risk of sounding ridiculous,

I do see a trend though....

Back in 2006 and 2007, Sony was willing to take a loss for its loyal customers.

Now in 2011 (a week away), Sony's still willing to take a loss for its loyal customers via its online network.

If anyone deserves my loyalty, I'd say Sony has earned it many times over.

Microsoft...pft..not so much (RROD, Charging to play online, losing good developers left and right, and now Pushing Kinect as its primary).

Microsoft hardly at all, in fact.

You know that PSN is only free so it can be used as a selling point right. And also they can't justify charching for it at this point.

You know that PSN is only free so it can be used as a selling point right. And also they can't justify charching for it at this point.

Sure they can.....in fact, some people pay for the optional PSN+ right now.

PSN is free because Sony wants people to get full value out of the games you buy, instead of ripping people off like Microsoft does with XBOX LIVE....Like Microsoft has done this entire generation.

Once again, you're wrong.
