You know that PSN is only free so it can be used as a selling point right. And also they can't justify charching for it at this point.

chase_arizona

Sure they can.....in fact, some people pay for the optional PSN+ right now.

PSN is free because Sony wants people to get full value out of the games you buy, instead of ripping people off like Microsoft does with XBOX LIVE.

Once again, you're wrong.

Nope, I'm right.

-PSN is free, and people choose to pay for optional services.

-I pay for my games which has online code built in on the disk.

-Microsoft makes you pay, effectivly twice.

Sorry...I can't be more right.....unless I said Microsoft rips people off. lol

PSN is free because it's a selling point, they can't justify charching people for it, and they don't want to lose the customers they have. PSN+ only further proves my point.

I'm not going to try to argue with someone that doesn't know anything about what they're even arguing about. Get a grip man.

Oh...your on the Shareholders board I take it.

I mean, you seem so sure while telling me I'm completely wrong, so it must be assumed you work for Sony or are part of their chain of command, right?

Can you get me a free tour of the corp office....I'd like that. :)

I think he's finding it tough arguing with someone who makes no points other than "no your wrong" and never expands his ideas more than a single sentence. You've made no effort to counter his points, at least try and tell him where he's wrong if that's what you think.

thats BS. First of all Sony electronics... outside of gaming are some of the most overpriced pieces of garbage on the market.... hows that bravia tv working out for you... could have has a better quality samsung for half the price. How bout that sony receiver.. oh, could have had a better onyko for half the price. Sony loves charging premiums for their brand name... they have been the leader in overpriced electronics for a long time now... they didnt all of a sudden get humble with the PS3. They dont care about your enjoyment, they just know they cant realistically charge for PSN when XBL is blowing them out of the water.

First of all, I don't care about Sony TV's and recievers and Walkman and Car stereos....I care about the PS3.

Second, regarding the bolded part:

Sony's optionally charging people now, and people seem to be quite happy with it. So apparently your info is a bit misinformed.

Similar situation with Live though isn't it? No new features yet a rise in price just because it's Xbox Live? I'd hardly call Sony products garbage, bar a PS3 that died they've been the most reliable pieces of kit i own. The camera ranges are sensational quality and competetively priced. Again this is one of those "a business trying to make money, shocking!" arguements.

i think XBL is ripoff, dont think im trying to defend MS... im just trying to say Sony has plenty of blood on their hands. Sony arent ambassadors of good will... they are corporate opportunists in the same vein as MS. In fact as a rule... outside of gaming i never buy sony products, because i know they are a massive ripoff.

I dont know a whole lot about cameras, but i guarantee there is a competitor out there selling a better quality product for half the price. Im not gonna pretend Sony doesnt make some of the best quality electronics out there... because yea, they make some really good stuff... im just saying you can usually find better stuff for half the price.

I've looked into cameras abit and read some reviews where the Sony camera generally comes out as the best only at a higher price, there's no competitor that's similar for a lower price, only cameras that are worse overall and cheaper. So with Sony it is generally the best or nothing. Think this is about right (don't go mental camera bofins :)). And anyway why not pay that bit more for a brand you can trust?

Sony operates in the red... all their dollars spent cant just break even, they need to cover the interest costs of their borrowing and make profit on top of that. PSN is an unsustainable model in its curent form.

well you got me, but you already knew that because i said i dont know cameras. :P

but when i was researching TVs and receivers when making a purchase... sony products had a very significant brand name premium built into the cost. I actually did buy a sony receiver... but thats because i managed to get a massive deal on the purchase... the MSRP was something ridiculous like $900, and i got it on clearance for $400.

Due to the brand name starting prices can be very high, i've never really bought their products at launch only once the prices have come down (getting rid of the brand costs really), Sony tend to like their bundles and deals so the prices will be higher there too. That's probably why we had different opinions, just different times of purchase :)

markinthedark

I don't think so.

I don't think you're seeing the big picture.....

let me help you:

Qriocity, Sony's Music Streaming Service, Launches

Sony Corp. on Wednesday launched a music streaming service in a bid to boost sales of its consumer electronics and break Apple's dominance of the online music business.......

While it remains to be seen whether consumers will embrace the new services, Sony is starting off with a substantial user base through the PlayStation 3. The video game console has more than 60 million users worldwide, and about 80 percent of PS3s are connected to the Web.

That's just an exerpt, but as you can see, long story short, Sony's plans with PSN extend further than just a trivial $50 year subscription to just play games.

They aren't charging, because they've got bigger plans, and there's more ways to make money than just yearly fees for online gaming....and with Sony's Media catalog, they are just the ones that can do it.

still gotta look at the big picture. Having money is worth something.... Just by investing in safe and risk free markets... you can make a signficant return on your investment. For sony to make risky expenditures, they at least need to make more of a profit than they could investing in a risk free assets.

So lets say i just throw around a theoretical figure... like PSN cost 100 million to create and maintain over a 10 year period. And remember sony is operating in debt... so they are paying interest on that borrowed 100 mil. Every year they lose money, they are still paying interest on this investment... if one year they come out of the red... they still have multiple years of interest payments to make up for in order to break even, in addition to whatever losses they suffered. So they cant just become profitable in a single fiscal year... they need to be profitable enough to repay their interest loans over the entire period. If they are just managing to break even at the end of their console's lifespan.... they arent proving themselves a viable business unit.... probably not even able to pay off their borrowing interest rate.

You know what?

All this theoretical talk is nonsense, on both our parts. We could do this all day, but its pointless.

I prefer to talk about what's here right in front of us, and that is, PSN is free, works well, and Sony's not going to charge to use the service this entire generation.

Those are facts I can get down with.

Dont get me wrong... sony makes some of the best electronics out there... if not the best. They just know the general consumer associates sony with quality... and build in a price premium as a result. They will often charge an extra couple hundred bucks just because they slapped their name on the product.... which is why im only saying sony arent the saints some folks make them out to be. They love money just as much as MS does.

agreed, if sony had their current PSN in place at the beginning of this gen... i wouldnt be an XBL gamer. The reason i subscibe to XBL is because sony hadtrash for online at the beginning of this gen. I dont think they will keep it free next gen, but if they do... i am 100% on board. I got too deep in XBL before sony brought their PSN to fruition, but im not dumb... if they deliver this caliber of online for free at the beginning of next gen... consider me a convert.

Well this turned into a "Sony actually cares about us!" thread rather quickly. :P How blind people can be. :(

Still impressive for a free service....

No its not, fact is that Microsoft yearly revenue is about the same only taking into account Xbox Live Gold Suscriptions.

revenue or profit?

I would imagine MS is making much more money of console sales due to cheaper hardware as well as game sales since dvd's are cheaper than blu rays... and the xbox live cash just seems to be icing on the cake.

You know that PSN is only free so it can be used as a selling point right. And also they can't justify charching for it at this point.

Sure they can.....in fact, some people pay for the optional PSN+ right now.

PSN is free because Sony wants people to get full value out of the games you buy, instead of ripping people off like Microsoft does with XBOX LIVE....Like Microsoft has done this entire generation.

And Sony will next gen. Mark those words. Live's revenue for MS can't be ignored by Sony and will do the same with the PS4.

And this is why Xbox Live is not free.

I just don't think I can add anymore then that...Its the ultimate ownage, Psn actually operates at a loss.

Actually that make sony and psn look even better, sony doesn't have as deep pockets as ms yet still they refuse to charge, how can any one see that as bad,and see ms charge as good or the correct thing to do,is beyon logic every one should be kissing sony's feet,ms has done nothing this gen but over price everything gaming, from games to peripherals, and some how that is good. Is like having 2 friends one that treat you good and care for you,and another that kick you every time he has a change a treat you like dirt, yet you defend your bad friend, and kick the living crap of the one that threat you good.

they refuse to charge? Yes Sony is all we love our customers we cannot charge them. Theres a difference between loving your consumer base and wanting to reward them and not being capable of charging for something...Sony is incapable of charging for an inferior service.

I'm not going to try to argue with someone that doesn't know anything about what they're even arguing about. Get a grip man.

I think he's finding it tough arguing with someone who makes no points other than "no your wrong" and never expands his ideas more than a single sentence. You've made no effort to counter his points, at least try and tell him where he's wrong if that's what you think.

There is a difference in an argument, and someone putting a finger in their ears and going LALALAL. and its not arizona thats doing it. We can bring every single point that proves unnatural wrong and he would still maintain his points no matter how flawed they maybe.
