[QUOTE="-The-G-Man-"]I seriously wonder how many people who say PlayStation Network is just as good (or very close to as good) as Xbox Live have ever used the service.  And how many of them lie when they answer such a question.nnavidson

I own both.  When I play online I want demos and the ability to play multiplayer.

Live crushes PSN with demos.

Online gameplay on the PSN seems just as good as Live to me. I'm sure Live has extra features, at least it should since it costs more, but I've never felt the need to use them.

XBL has multiplayer online demos. PSN has none.

What is your GamerTag?

It's free. That's something Microsoft has never done.

Ninja-Vox

Nobody is discrediting the fact that it being free is a good thing. What is stupid, is the number of cows who make threads claiming PSN is just as good as Xbox Live, when they have clearly never used Live because if they had they would know that such a statement isn't even close to being true.

The thing is, Live's extra features don't really seem worth the price to a lot of gamers.  At least in my case, owning both, I've never not been able to do something on PSN that I do on live.

Online multiplayer, the meat and potatoes of live, is just as good.

PSN does need more store content though.

You need Gold to play multiplayer demos.

Right now there's a lot of PS3 owners playing Warhawk so theres one game right there.

u ppl are forgetting the most important

how many ps3 games actually have online support? a handful? a dozen?

with the 360 pretty much every game u buy has online support and online multiplayer

nnavidson

How many PS3 games are out?

I honestly think the days of online on Xbox but not on PS3 are limited now that PSN is up and running.

You've thought wrong. The simple is fact is that online quality on the xbox is a constant; on the PS3, it's entirely down to the developer. You can play Resistance online because the developers invested in servers to allow you to do so. You can use a headset because they implemented code which makes that work. Why? Because they wanted to be the online experience out of the gate when PS3 launched. They were willing to invest the money and effort because they felt it would pay off in sales.

Not every developer is going to do that. Big publishers support xbox live because it requires so little effort on their part. Everything is already implemented for the developer. Every game automatically supports voice chat, friends invites, cross-game messaging, everything. Because it's all built in to xbox live, regardless of what game you're playing. Everything is unified

With PSN, a developer has to implement all of that themselves.

oh ok

so tell me what more does xbox live have over PSN ?

XBL sports
- Infrastructure that allows the community to self-govern:
- Gamer zone
- Rep
- Prefer/avoid
- Feedback
- Acvite monitoring of feedback
- Matchmaking that takes that all into account
- Functional cross-game invite system that brings you straight into a friend's session
- Closed, secure network that actively checks for modded consoles

Additionally, for ALL users, Connectivity to the web. I like being able to log into my account on xbox.com to check my messages and see what my friends are up to
MS has dedicated resources whose job is to specifically connect with the community. Major Nelson, Trixie... and the support they give to fan sites through their Community Developer, MVP and Ambassador programs.

I don't think Sony is as connected to their PSN community as MS is to their Xbox Live community.

So no, I don't think that PSN has everything XBL does.

That gamertag does not exist. Better list another GT.

Also Warhawk is a beta, not a demo. If it was a demo, then I'd (and everyone else) would be able to download.

I see XBL as a game, you're gonna get one anyway, although you aren't paying for anything except to play online (minus that gamer feedback crap).

I'm sorry, but no it isn't. You're a fanboy, so it's probably useless me even saying this. But it just isn't. And this is coming from somebody who got flamed as being a "cow" because i bashed microsoft's build quality. PSN has nothing on xbox live.

What you're doing is trying to break it down into simple features. That is not how it works. With Live, as soon as you turn on your console you're online. Your gamercard is in the upper left on every blade of the dashboard. You can see your gamerscore, you can view your recent games, your achievements, everything. It has IM for people to instantly talk to you from their consoles or PC via pop-ups that dont get in the way of everything else.

You dont have to stop what you're doing to go message a friend. You press the guide button on your controller and you can literally do ANYTHING you want without stopping the game/movie/whatever it is you're doing. A game doesn't have to implement a friends list. You press the guide button and it's already there, across every game. You can see what all of your friends are doing, right down to what street they're on in Crackdown. You can compare games, achievements

You can invite them to play Gears of War online while they're playing Dead or Alive, again through little pop-ups at the bottom of the screen which you can ignore without doing a thing. Or, press the guide button and accept. Put gears of war in, and it'll automatically take you straight to the loby for the game you wanted to join.

And that's all in place for EVERY GAME. I can chat with my friend even though we're playing two completely different games. On PSN, all of that has to be implemented by  the developer. There's no unity. If i want to send a friend a message to join my game, i have to go find that game, load it up and go to the online section, if it has one. If i want to chat, the game has to support that.

You will never understand xbox live until you have it. So dont make threads about it.

Home is offering a unified system for games to add those things that you're saying.

If a developer is making a multiplayer game and can't put in voice chat/messaging on the PS3, I doubt they're capable of making a decent online game in the first place.

Personally, corss-game messaging has been always annoying to me.  I don't want to know that someone I played R6 a few days ago wants to play a game with me while I'm trying to play Castlevania.

If I want to play that game, I'll put it in my system.

Translation of legalize3's post:

"I have no response to your annihilation of my thread. I will therefore simply yell "HOME" as if this is somehow a certainty that Home will offer all of the features you just pointed out to a degree of identical quality."

IMO, still not quite up to XBL standards, but since it is free, thats understandable. Nintendo has to get on the ball and get some damn good online stuff.

I'm stretching things of course, but this was an occurance that would happen sometimes when I forgot to put up "busy".

The original post was PSN got the job done for free.

In my opinion, getting the job done for free is better then getting the job done plus several features I've never used for $50.

In terms of services Live is better, but not $50 a year better.

Live crushes PSN with demos.

Online gameplay on the PSN seems just as good as Live to me. I'm sure Live has extra features, at least it should since it costs more, but I've never felt the need to use them.

XBL has multiplayer online demos. PSN has none.

What is your GamerTag?

Full Auto 2 Demo says you don't know what you talking about.

Great, online play isn't much of a deal to me to be honest.

Nobody is discrediting the fact that it being free is a good thing. What is stupid, is the number of cows who make threads claiming PSN is just as good as Xbox Live, when they have clearly never used Live because if they had they would know that such a statement isn't even close to being true.

I am neither a cow nor a lemming (or whatever) but SURELY it is only a matter of time before Sony releases firmware updates that allow the PSN to do everything that is currently available on the XBL servive.

The fact that it will also still be free on PSN and you will have the expanded functionality of Home suggests that in the long term the PSN should be the better service all round.

What is happening on XBL that cannot possibly be done, or indeed will not eventually be done, on a PS3 with a firmware update?

What's amazing is people who think Sony is incapable of having the same service as XBL. Yes, I know XBL is the stronghold defense in the 360 fanbase, but in reality PSN will be just as good. PSN just need time. I know the "just wait" fanboys will claim ownage, but any smart man knows things don't happen over night.

Do you guys even know what a 'charm' is?!

Play less JRPGs and more WRPGs to find out!

PikaPichu

Yeah a Thief and Dancer class in Final Fantasy tactics works like a charm.

Okay, cows, here's a challenge for you. List off all third-party PS3 games that have full online multiplayer. For extra credit, list thost where the dev or publisher has established dedicated server. EC#2, mark those whose dedicated servers are assured to remain running for the practical life of the PS3.

Meanwhile, Lemmings can list off all their third-party online 360 games. They may not use dedicated servers, but this has the advantage of having a guarantee of service. Anyway, head-to-head games are best done point-to-point.

What about the games that have already been released, before the implementation of Home? Doesn't this open the possibility of incompatibilies and conflicts? At least Microsoft set down the Live ground rules before the first console rolled off the assembly line.

Or am I right that there isn't actually anything that is currently being done on XBL that will not also be added to PS3 PSN too, via a firmware update?

At least PSN is free and also has Home coming. Something that will not likely be added to XBL now that the service is established and the whole Blade navigation system is in place and that is their chosen interface...

The machine has about 40 games on it so far. I really don't think that is a major issue, considering nearly 2000 games came out on the PS2. Also. There is nothing to say that Home will not work with those games anyway. It's not as if Sony didn't know it was coming...

Why bother? All Microsoft needs to do to stay ahead is just keep adding new features, features Sony would then have to keep copying just to keep up.

Did it? If they did, why isn't Home the standard interface of the PS3 instead of the Cross-Media Bar? Why wasn't cross-game chatting and the like incorporated from Day One when they knew Microsoft was implementing it standard in XBox Live (since the standard predates the 360--it was featured in the original XBox).

There's also the matter of third-party support, which cows have apparently grown amnesiac. They try to ignore the fact that some third parties would rather eschew online on the PS3 than put down the money to do it Sony's way (look no further than VT3 and THP8, both from well-reputed companies who you'd think could afford to go Sony's way--but they didn't).

There's not really a lot more that Microsoft could really add now is there?

I think most of the new stuff you see from now on will be the kind of stuff you see on both platforms at roughly the same time. New films for download, or music download services etc. It's not like they are gonna do a Wii and pull out an entirely new service or concept for XBL now...

You never know. Who knew they'd institute background downloading last fall? A lot of their new tricks are actualy inspred by the users themselves. And as long as there are Live users with ideas, Microsoft will probably always have some neat ideas to add to their semi-annual updates. For Sony to get ahead, they have to come up with something compelling ahead of Microsoft, but that calls for software expertise--Microsoft is clearly ahead there.

Do you realize that in order to be as integrated as Live, they'll essentially have to be one and the same. It's the Dashboard that gives the 360 its versatility, and everything mentioned can be done through the Dashboard. So unless Home integrates itself into the Cross Media Bar (essentially turning them into one program), how do you expect Home to be able to perform cross-game invites, chatting, and so on while you're in the middle of playing a different game? How's its performance in third-party games, where Sony has much less control?

That probably depends more on your line than PSN. The important thing is that XBL had all that stuff a year and a half ago, so what additions are there on PSN???

lol...yeah, what does the PSN have more then XBL? Well, practically nothing, but PSN is FREE and have almost everything that XBL has, so this time PSN wins...

there is no doubt that XBL is better than PSN, but in my imo, the advantages XBL has over PSN is not worth paying $50.

Although XBL is obviously kicking PSN's butt right now, remember PSN its still in its early stages and XBL has been around for like 5 years (am I correct?).  Anyhow, my point is that XBL has had enough time to polish up

And polished up XBL definitely is.
