Well, I'm really attracted to the idea of not needing to swap a disc to play it. But I can't find it on the regular psn store. Do you need psn+ to buy it?
[QUOTE="asylumni"][QUOTE="donalbane"] But it's not as cheap as it seems if you factor in the fee you already paid, you see? Plus, you are essentially paying for a service which encourages you to spend even more money... on games you probably wouldn't have been interested in otherwise. So, at least from my perspective, it's "Paying for a discount." Am I the only one who finds that concept strange? donalbane
But discounts are only one of the things that you get when you subcribe. To define the whole subscription as just discounts would be like saying all you get for Xbox Live Gold is a discount on a couple items a week.
You also get automatic downloads, a minor but nice convenience service. More robust game trials and themes/avatars. Plus you get more games. Just counting the good games, in the first month and a half (for about $7) we've gotten;
Critter Crunch - a fun take on the jewel smashing - type game.
Kahoots - a neat puzzle game.
Fieldrunners - a nice little tower defense game.
WipeOut HD - a great racing game.
Aero Racer - actually, I'm still undecided on this one, but it's kinda neat - a little racer in RC sty1e.
Not a bad value and we're only halfway through the second month and will be getting another full PSN game and more.
Personally, I wouldn't play any of those 'free' games even if they actually didn't have an associated cost. I bought Wipeout HD when it came out for my fiance. She never played it, and neither did I. I'm sure some people like those games, and that's fine... I don't fault them for that. But personally, none of the content that they offer is in any way compelling to me.And that's fine, you're only cheating yourself. These aren't the best games ever, but they're still worth experiencing, particularly for what will amount to less than a buck each. Your predisposed assumptions don't change the reality that it is, actually, a good value.
[QUOTE="ruthless12"]playing all games online for free, kthxbyeCuteCakesOn a pretty lame online system IMO. The more I use PSN the more I dislike it, it feels very incomplete and a total knee-jerk reaction to the multiple successes of Xbox LIVE. Sony should overhaul the entire system next gen. Why? All most people want to do is play online and you do it just as you would any XBL game.
[QUOTE="donalbane"][QUOTE="mystervj"] Same, I got Wipeout HD and I love it :D also got Super Stardust HD cheap and love it too. shadowcat2576But it's not as cheap as it seems if you factor in the fee you already paid, you see? So, at least from my perspective, it's "Paying for a discount." Am I the only one who finds that concept strange? Yes you're paying for a discount, but it's nothing new or strange. Sam's Club and Costco have been doing it for years. On a more game related not, you have the Edge card from Gamestop as an example. All of them require you to pay a modest fee to get discounts on future purchases. The idea as a custommer, is that you'll save more with those discounts than you spent on the membership. If you would not buy a lot, it's not a good plan for you. Yeah, but you recoup the price of the Costco membership in your first visit if you get 100 worth of food. And food is a mandatory purchase. PSN+, to continue your analogy, would be like buying a $50 Costco card, and then getting a 50% discount on sweet potatos or creamed corn throughout the month with a complementary subscription to Cat Fancy to sweeten the pot. If you like those items, then you come out on top, I suppose. But if you don't want any of that stuff, then you are forced to suck it up and hope Costco offers better freebies and discounts next month. If you could choose which items you got for free/discounted, I'd be all over it. As it is, it's a bunch of stuff that probably wasn't selling very well (for good reason.)
[QUOTE="Antwan3K"][QUOTE="genaroll"] So you would rather pay 50$ for wipeout hd instead of getting it cheaper at a store.Thats really all there is to psn+ free games, but unlike what you typed you cant download past games only the games available for the current week(Yeah now its only a week you get). You obviously dont have plus .genaroll
i do have PSN+.. and ive already went back and downloaded content from over a couple weeks old.. so im not sure what you are talking about.. Wipeout HD is definitely one of the more talked about titles currently availble for the service and if what you were saying is true, if a person subscribed to PSN+ today then they would not be able to download the game.. that is not the case..
Unless you did it before August 4th your lying.i did it before aug 4th.. so are u saying that if i delete my Wipeout HD, i cant redownload it?.. or if i subscribed to PSN+ today, i wouldnt b able to play wipeout hd?.. doubt it..
but even for the sake of arguement (i'm not at my PS3 to confirm your statement) that what you are saying is true, i'm still paying a fee for additional games and gaming content rather than paying a fee to do something that should actually be free already (ie logon to an online game of Madden 11)..
**UPDATE**
you can download PSN+ content for the entire month that the content was released (not just for a week, even though there may be "special offers" that last for less than a month).. if you download a game/content, you can always go back and redownload and obviously any trophies you receive are permanent aswell.. so yea, even though you cant go back and see all the content that's been released since PSN+'s inception, you can definitely keep and redownload anything youhave previously played.. a good practice is to simply download any and everything u are remotely interested in month-to-month and simply redownload later if you dont have time or HDD space to play currently..

Value is a subjective construct. One man's trash is another man's treasure.your wrong.... unless psn+ offeres better lag free matches its not even a option in my books. Its Optional so get over it. if you dont want to pay dont pay. its simple really. im a PSN+ memeber and so far everything they offered were stuff i already own but im hoping for more improvments to come. besides they have just started. with Xbox360 you must pay to play online while PSN dont :). PSN+ is optional
finalstar2007
I agree It really sucks badly.
But of course the edless group of Sony fanboys will just defend it or say its optional. Take off your fanboy goggles its not that hard Look i can do it too!
I love my Nintendo Wii but the motion controlls are annoying and the Graphics suck
I Love my 360 but my first one have The RR and that really sucked
I Love my Ps3 but Plus, Home, The Psp Go, and Soon Move all suck!!!! BADLY!!!
Why is this so hard for people?
I swear this site is like 90% blind fanboys who act as it their #1 system can do no wrong its really kinda sad.
mojito1988
The reason is because if you think it sucks, you won't miss anything by not paying for it. You aren't denied anything you've already payed for by not paying for it. And, if you think it's worth it, you have that option.
It's like me saying that a Costco membership isn't worth it, I can go to any other store and buy normally.

What does saying it's optional have to do with being a fanboy. I have an xbox. I don't have xbox live because I can still play my games without it and play online games on my PS3. Does that mean I'm gonna call Xbox live a rip off because I had to pay for it to play online? Does the fact that I have an xbox and not live make me a fanboy?
I don't see the problem with using the optional argument. It's basically them trying to control the argument in their favor so no matter what you say they'll always win.
So in essence you're doing this...
[QUOTE="Raymundo_Manuel"]
How was that a dodge?
Your answer told me that you understand that Xbox and Xbox Live is just as optional as owning a PS3 and not paying for PSN
Bazooka_4ME
It was a dodge because you said...
It's funny how PS3 fanboys actually knock XBL whilewillingly giving up $50 for a similar service. Also funny that you're essentially paying for "hope" :D Paying $50 for nothing, but stay loyal to Sony 8) They must love customers like you.Raymundo_Manuel
...which brought to my question "how do you play your 360's MW2 online?"
tsk tsk, misleading info is misleading... It's not about you owning a 360 which I assumed you dodged it. It's about how each service serves their subscribers.
Notice the word highlighted? PSN subscribers are NOT willingly giving up a $50 'different' service.
Now I'm just confused with what you're talking about.
I didn't say "PSN subscribers are willingly giving up the service" but that they willingly give up $50 for a service just like Xbox Live, and therefore I have no idea why they knock it.
Both PS3 owners, and Xbox 360 owners have the same option here. To pay $50 for a service that provides online content on their consoles.
The point I'm making is that 360 owners are not forced to pay for it anymore than PS3 owners are forced to pay for PSN+. If you don't want to WILLINGLY give up $50 for Live then you have the option to get a PS3, or get a PC to get online for free.
Just because you happen to own a 360 doesn't mean anyone is forcing you to pay $50 for online. Those people obviously want to pay $50 otherwise they would own a system where you don't have to pay for online.

lol..
Live games had lag to,lag is not just based on code is also based on your connection and how far you are, hell games like Gears tend to had horrible lag on live, even with 4 vs 4 which is a rather small number of player, yet i play games like warhawk prety much lag free with 31 more players,on huge stages with airplanes, jeeps, tanks, hell even another bigger flying ship.
Optional or not, it's a waste at this point, get over it.
mitu123
That is if you have what they offer wich nthe great majority of PSN owners don't,you people speak like if Wipeout would have sold 20 million over PSN,the great majority PSN user don't own what sony is offering, you can see that by the sales those games had over their lifetime vs the number of units sold.

Costco and a number of others member's only retailers say no...it isn't strange at all.
Playing online was free so why even bother for +? The only thing you get is discounts, a free (SELECTED) game, and some downloading thing (I can't remember) , being able to play demos a little bit earlier, and maybe a few other things. It was optional and you should've read what it was all about. Both XBL and PS+ online subscriptions are crap. I'm not paying for +. I'm very happy that I'm able to play online FOR FREE. Free PSN > PS+ ($17.99 3mon. $49.99 1yr/ for just extra content and stuff). Free wins.;):Dcoolkid93
If "free wins" then look at it from my perspective. I signed up for the 1 year subscription, which really is 18 months.
In the first month alone, I got roughly $30 worth of content. I also got a subscription to Qore, which means ANYTHING that comes out from this point on is free. I've already got my money's worth in the first month alone (including the Qore subscription). So anything else I download for the next 17 months is technically free. So if free wins, how can you say this is a bad deal or a rip off?
I would also add that Qore also seems to come with its own set of free downloads as well. So thatis even more free stuff.
Yeah, but you recoup the price of the Costco membership in your first visit if you get 100 worth of food. And food is a mandatory purchase. I am going to disagree. My understanding of Costco is that they have a flat markup on any and all items they sell. So for a LOT of standard food items, if you shop around you will notice Costco's prices are almost the same as places like Walmart or Superstore or wherever. Hell, even their electronics, tvs, Ipods, etc are only $1 cheaper (if even) than other retailers. Why? Because those other retailers are not selling them for a huge markup so Costco loses it's price advantage.
The real DEALs from Costco that make membership worth while are large ticket items, which often change seasonally, and the special sale coupons that come from their regular Costco magazine. The idea is that you are going to buy most of that stuff anyway, so people will buy the membership more for the monthly (or less frequent) deals. If they shop there regularly and never buy some big sale item, then even with the very small and minor discounts (ie. pennies) they get from shopping in standard groceries, they will make that money back over time anyway.
So I would argue that Costco works EXACLY like PSN.

If you buy Wipeout and a Qore subscription seperately, you are already paying $50. So anything beyond that is essentially a "free" item.

Live = $50 dollars a year for allowing a conection with other players online, something every one get free on each console on the console and portable market since online was implemented, in other words charge you for something given away by every one.
You will never get what you invested here.

You're saying that none of it would be worth it to you, but it's only been 2 months of content out of 12-15 months. You really don't expect there to be better games out of the next 10-13 PSN, 20-26 Minis, and 10-13 PS1 games?I think the only people who won't find value out of this, at least by the end of the 12-15 month subscription, are people who buy a lot of things on PSN that are offered as "free" each month. Even then, you'd have to buy a lot to get to the point where you think it's worthless.
[QUOTE="mitu123"]Not if people enjoy the discounts and "free" stuff they get. Like myself. So far I've used everything except fat princess and a few game discounts. Made my 50 bucks back in the first month.Optional or not, it's a waste at this point, get over it.

What exactly are you paying for? Autormatic downloads?! This has to be the most useless paid service I have EVER seen. Most of the "freebies" are crap and either stuff most people already have or most people wouldn't touch with a barge pole. PSN is a fairly poorly integrated system when compared to Xbox LIVE and they don't even bother addressing the actual issues people have with it, or features is desperately needs. Auto downloads still has my head shaking... CuteCakes
Sony should charge people for playing online + that will make you happy. sounds about right.
