Im going to try to make this thread so it looks liek i am neither a Lemming or a cow, because in reality im actually Neutral between the two.

Lots of people seem to think that PSN is a very bad service. But in fact it really isnt. While it isnt as robust as LIVE, PSN does give you the basic components for Online play at no pennys charge to you. While it does not have a Unified Freinds syestem (hopefully fixed in the future) Its does let you have a freinds list, play games online, get demos of games, buy add on content, and the ability to purchase Downloadable games. However, it does not give you the ability to purchase TV shows and Movies like Live does. and I admit the Interface is much better than PSNs. but the two former arent necessary to online gaming, tehre more of a added perk to that 50 dollar a year price tag. and I do like the fact that they recieve updateds on demos and such a little faster than PSN (being that PSN is only updated on Thursdays)

But people really need to realize that the reason why Live seems to be better is mainly because its a older service and has had 5 years to mature and grow, while PSN has had only 1 year. THeres even talk cirsulating that PSN is about to get its own Video/Music Distribution service, however it would take time for them to match lives all ready large librarey.

Basically, your paying your 50 dollars a year right now for Online play and a Video Distribution service, while with PSN, your paying nothing for the same thing minus the Video Distribution and the unified freind service.

It basically boils down to do you want to pay a yearly fee for something Fantastic, or not paying for something thats almost as fantastic.

Once it get its ingame XMB it will at least be an even playing feild when it come to online connectivity. This is assuming SOny actually does it right and not try to create some shortcut.

There is a rumor of a Subscription plan in the works (at least in japan) where if you pay the fee, you can have Unlimited Downloads and Stuff like that.

I'd believe it, especially if PS3 sales take off and more and more people start using PSN/Home.

While Xbox Live has lag, no browser, and a $50 fee. Clearly in this case the free service is better than the paid service. So you don't get what you paid for. If you pay you're getting ripped off.

I find it strange that everyone claims they get "NO LAG" on PSN. If you know anything about basic internet rules of course your getting lag. It's a pretty pathetic claim actually.

I know. Thats why I didnt put it in the post. Whenever I play UT 3, I cant play it because when My gun fires, the bullets come out a second later. soooo much lag.

As a gamer, I only care about being able to play online. I don't care about video distribution. I care about there being servers that host games. I care about reliability.

So in light of this, it seems to me that PSN is the better deal since they don't charge for the most important part of the service.

whats this guy talking about?? the ps2 had online play, it was just trash to. Sony dropped the ball twice. they had time to get it right...they just didn't or couldn't. so stop with the Xbox Live had X amount of time more to mature BS...ps2 had just as much time and so has ps3...it just still came out halfa**ed, free or not.

maybe they were just to embarassed to make people pay for it because they know they did a crappy job at it.

Well you see when they say that there is no lag on PSN they mean they don't get lag while playing games. And what they really mean is that you used to never get lag in Resistance because of the dedicated regional servers. Even the 40 player matches ran smooth as silk. However, once they introduced worldwide servers, the lag in that game exploded. And you get lag in games like CoD4 all the time, no matter your connection, because the servers aren't dedicated.

In reality, the best thing about PSN online is the fact that very few players actually have mics because they aren't included with the PS3. You would be amazed how much less obnoxious talking there is during games compared to XBL.

Very true but what's the difference between a unified friends list and the PSN friends list? :?munu9

Basically the way the friends list works now is this. You can add players to a buddy list in specific games (like Resistance) without adding them on your PSN buddies list. Usually its easy to add players you encountered online to your PSN buddy list because it has a recent players list in the XMB. But with games like CoD4, the players you face online don't get added to the recent players list. So to add them, you have to copy there name down, then send them a buddy invite on the XMB.

Basically the PS3 needs a standardized friends list that is common/shared among all the games.

It's actually not a rumour, but a poll for the PC Playstation store. Sony is asking consumers do they want a lifetime subscription to d/l unlimited content for their PSP or a small monthly subscription.

Better not be. But its about the same chance the 360 doesn't have an excessive break down issue anymore.

You've "played" it? Do you own a PS3 and play games like WarHawk and UT3 online? The experience is almost as good as XBL to me. The only bad thing is that not everyone has a headset. Live isbetter for now, but in no way can you call PSN garbage, especially with lag free servers and a free price tag.

Once you got XBL you can't go back to anything else. Thats all you have to know.

Funny, you just reinforced his perception/experience. No compelling argument about why it's better. I'm not saying that it's not, I want to hear how it is better. I'll show you two headlines from just yesterday and today though ...

What to do while Xbox Live is Unstable
http://www.gamer20.com/features/308
January 7,2008 - Over the past couple of weeks Xbox Live has had quite a few issues.Games have beendropping out, account recoveries are failing, matchmaking isn't stable, downloads from the marketplace stall or give error codes, and of course on some occasions, theservice isn't able to connectat all. Though the service is better now than it has been in the last couple of weeks, it's still a long way from being as rock solid and snappy as it had previously been. The folks at Xbox Live Operations really are working hard to get things back up and running smoothly. So while they do their thing, why not take some time out and check out these other fun and informative internet diversions.

Xbox Live Down Again
http://n4g.com/xbox360/News-98167.aspx
After a week of frustration, ending with a law suit. It seemed XBL was back up. But, now new reports are coming in that XBL is down again. The official Xbox.com site reports that:

Users may experience issues performing transactions dependent on Windows
Live ID availability including but not limited to Xbox 360 account creation, renewal, recovery, and logging into or creating Windows Live ID accounts. We are aware of the issue and actively working toward a resolution. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Or in simple English, the service is down again.

I really like the idea of playing online for free. PSN got it right, they just need to add content at this point. Hopefully it will never become pay to play, but a premium service for things like videos/tv/music would be neat. In reality, Sony has way more ties to media (i.e. movies, music, tv, etc.) and the PS3 would be a reallysmart wayto push digital distribution.

For online core play, PSN is better because it is free and it has the same performance as XBL, actually better for the included dedicated servers.

For online overall ( features, in-game music, friend list...etc), XBL is better, but I don't care about it, I only care about demos and that's it, I don't buy anything from PSN or XBL, I just want to play online and PSN is doing it for free.

i have had little to no exp with XBL. psn is really my first console network experience.

Now i have a question, the only reason i have ever heard that XBL is better is ... simply that its better.

i guess i would like to know what im missing out on.

It basically boils down to do you want to pay a yearly fee for something Fantastic, or not paying for something thats almost as fantastic.

i was just surprised at how bare psn is...there's nothing on it, lol. i see why it can be free because all it does is connect people online and put out late demos to download. i even hear the download time on PSN is way slower than Live's. i was surprised at how bad it really was. there's just so much more on Live....movies, TV shows, music videos, popular fights...demos come out earlier on it and always some new content to sift through that's free. it's just really satisfying, it;s what online should be for a console. don't feel like playing online get into something on Live, too many options. lol, i can find somethingi'minterested in more on Live then my digital cable channels...and i haveon demand and 3 premium stations, lol. there's just options there. plus the messenger is damn near flawless and has been good since Xbox and they keep advancing it. you really need to find a friend and check it...don't just look at it and say "oh", go through it and see whats there...try the messenger system out, get in a game and see when one of ur friends logs on and u get the option of leaving ur game to go play with them instead. it basically already has everything u want online to have....and like i said, it had a lot of it it's first attempt. so this being Sony's second attempt at it and failing is sad in itself. waiting a year plus for Home...wth. i've never seen such a powerful system so s****y for games in my life. short games, with no online, and the online is halfa**ed. too many strikes against the system for some people.
