You're on the internet. Do your own research and don't ask other people's opinion, especially in a fanboy section of a boards forum.

I'm an avid handheld gamer and would like to upgrade from PSP/DS to Vita/3ds. Not right away but maybe in the near future(I'm still holding back). I like to get both but prefer to pick one first due to monetary constraints. I've only done a little research on both so I'd like to hear raw opinions from you guys(preferably someone who owns a Vita/3ds). Note that this topic is not primarily intended to show which is the better handheld platform but rather to see what handheld is convenient for me.

One thing that made me lean more on the VITA is my experience in PSN with the PSP. Lots of games and what little DLC I've enjoyed. I know that the 3ds supports this too but I don't know much and heard that it's region-locked. Most platforms(PSP, GBA, DS, etc.) here in my region are Japan-made and seeing that Nintendo region-locked it then I thought that 3ds has limited it's collection of games. That I might have trouble in acquiring games I like.

One more factor is the collection of games on both handheld. I love Etrian Odyssey and Fire Emblem games and would like to play the new ones on 3ds. On the other hand, there's MGS on Vita and I love MGS but that's the only thing that I could think of playing in VITA. Any other games worth playing on both handheld?

Anyone? Any help is appreciated.

I'd say the 3DS just because it is cheaper and doesn't have ridiculously priced memory cards.

If money is not an issue, then really it depends on what kind of games you like. Both have some good software and good software coming out. The 3DS has more of a library though, being 1 year older and all.

check their games library and whats coming up, see which one you prefer and get that handheld...

Its simple, no need to ask in a forum what to buy with your money since you should know what games you enjoy playing !!

despite crap sales the Vita looks like it'll be getting some good games down the line, the 3DS titles look kind of lacking the rest of the year, except maybe a rumored Majora's Mask remake by Christmas, and Shin Megami Tensei 4, and Soul Hackers... though when it comes to SMT nothing holds a candle to Persona 4 and the Vita does have thatlamprey263
well 3ds is getting zelda something, pokemon x and y, animal crossing new leaf, a new mario and luigi game, a rumoured mario 3d game, donkey kong, smt soul hackers, smt 4, ... where in all that is the "lack" you refer to?

I'd go with the 3DS. It's cheaper and has more and better games (IMO).

I would say the Vita. But to be honest, Android/iOs devices are better choices.

Don't take me wrong, I love better graphics, d-pads and analogues but I think iOs and Android overall  work better as portable gaming devices.

I'm a new 3DS XL owner and I'm impressed with the eshop so far. It's actually better than PSP's shop when accessed from a PSP. (But for all I know Vita is even better than both.) There over 20 demos I think. I downloaded them all. Not bad, at this rate 3DS will have more demos in its lifetime than PSP ever had in the west.

top 3DS games http://www.unikgamer.com/tops/top-3ds-games-76.html

top Vita games http://www.unikgamer.com/tops/top-ps-vita-games-81.html

though 3DS also has access to DSiware and virtual console. (but no SNES or N64 games)

i like the vita better. it could have a bigger library of games but its not like its starving. psn plus offers a bunch of great games also if you have that. Worth mentioning is the sexy oled screen the vita has. the 3ds is just laughable next to it. vita also has a better web browser and better netflix app. 3ds also doesnt get soul sacrifice or gravity rush

since you have a psp/ds and I bit you enjoyed both, then you will enjoy both vita/3ds. If you want to buy a handheld right now go with 3ds as there are more than 10 games that are all must buy games. For the vita, I could name 5 or less. Vita needs time to get more softwares and it will shine more with the launch of the ps4 as all games are playable on the vita via remote play.

Having both I'd suggest you also to buy both, especially you being a handheld gamer.
They're pretty much different so you won't have conflict owning both devices.

My favourite is VITA (not that I don't like 3DS) but I'm more impressed with VITA's hardware and I'm using it more on a daily basis!

Vita is far better designed, in my opinion. The 3D screen is probably the biggest waste of resources in gaming history. Also the lack of dual analog is unnaceptable, these days. I would say both libraries are similar in quality.
