Super Mario Galaxy 2 is FOR SURE in the top 10.

After that there are three games that stand a chance but no guarantee (and because I haven't made a list beyond my top 5)

Twilight Princess is another great choice.  I also have to consider if I'd pick Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Majora's Mask or Skyward Sword (30 hours in and it's amazing) over it.  The 3D Zelda games all make a strong case.

The Witcher 2 and Mass Effect 3 stand a chance of making the top ten but I can't be sure.

As it stands the top ten currently are Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Chrono Trigger, Halo: Combat Evolved, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4 and Super Mario Galaxy 2.  From there I'm having a difficult time determining which Zelda title belongs in the top 10.

I don't have much of anything to post beyond those that I know for sure, so realistically ME3 and TW2 COULD make the top 10 along with Twilight Princess (which I think is my favorite Zelda but I'm not sure and if TP doesn't make it's because one of the other games will make it in its place).  Beyond that I haven't put much thought into the list.

But there are too many classics that can fill the list out from Okami to Final Fantasy (likely IV at the moment, until I get my mitts on VI) to Ninja Gaiden (definitely Black) or Bayonetta (this gen, which I think might be better than Black so it could make a case for inclusion) to Half-Life 2 (likely Episode 2 will get the nod over HL2 proper).

Shadow of the Colossus and Dragon's Quest VIII. I'm not fond of this current generation.

So many good games this gen.

  1. Persona 4.
  2. Mass Effect series (based on sheer number of hours).
  3. Bioshock.
  4. ACII.

How many of this gens games would make it into your top10 of all time list?

For a gen that went on for so long...it really isnt that many for me.

anab0lic

Starcraft 2 for sure in my main top 10.  Terraria and FTL in my top 10 indies.

The only people where this would be hard to would be the ones that have Ten/Ten's or GOAT from before this gen giving them inevitable bias and to much focus on nostalgia. Otherwise, all normal people should have found a few or so that would make the cut.

There are a lot. The Halo series, the Gears of War series, The God of War games, several Mario games, throw one or two Zelda games, Metrod Prime Trilogy. Donkey Kong Country Returns, Rayman Origins and Legends, I played a heck of a lot of Mario Kart games, I played a bunch of Wii Sports too. I really enjoyed the first GRID racing games. I would say the last 10 years has been pretty damn good.

  • Devil May Cry 3
  • Ocarina of Time
  • Super Mario World
  • Killing Floor
  • Final Fantasy X
  • God of War 2

I've been gaming for over 30 years, and the games of this gen that would qualify in my Top 10 of all time would include;

Mass Effect trilogy
Batman Arkham games
Tomb Raider (2013)
Assassin's Creed
The Witcher 2
Skyrim
Deus Ex HR
Alan Wake

AdobeArtist
None of these titles would even make it my top 10 for THIS GEN. Different strokes for different folks or whatever. But seriously, only 2 spots for other gens?

A lot of my favorite games of this gen were multiplayer games, so it's hard to put them in my top 10 when I figure some are already "dead" and the others will be relatively soon I'm sure.

I'd say World of Warcraft The Burning Crusade is the single greatest experience I've ever had playing video games by a very, very, very VERY long shot, but it only lasted 2 years :( Wouldn't trade those two years for anything, but it's still kinda hard to say the game is in my top 10 when you can't even play it anymore.

Regardless, I don't even think I could list a top 10. The only games I've repeatedly gone back to, without fail, over the years are the DKC series, Banjo Kazooie, and the Half Life series (and technically the HL2 episodes are this gen). I have played Batman: AA a couple times, so it's probably the closest to being added into my top 10, but I'm not sure. I still have yet to play Batman: AC though :P I'm thinking this year will be the year I get it.

I've been gaming since the Commodore 64 and NES days, and there has been a crap loads of amazing games this gen. I'd be hard pressed not to pick at least 5 of the games this gen on my all time list. Just so many amazing and unique experiences.

As a gamer who's been gaming since 1996 this is basically what my top 30 video game would look like (bolded = came out this gen, this gen did not disappoint me at all)

Not gonna put this list in order

  • MGS 3
  • Chrono Cross
  • Uncharted 2
  • Warcraft 3/The Frozen Throne
  • Skyrim
  • Uncharted 3
  • The Witcher 2
  • Final Fantasy 6
  • Final Fantasy 4
  • Final Fantasy 12
  • Mass Effect
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Batman Arkham City
  • Zelda Skyward Sword
  • Zelda MM
  • RDR
  • GTA V
  • MGS 1
  • MGS Peace Walker

  • Fire Emblem Awakening
  • RE2
  • State of Decay
  • RE1 Remake
  • Metro Last Light

If I'd reduce it to a top 10 it would look something like (not in order)

  • RE4
  • MGS 3
  • TLOU
  • GTA V
  • State of Decay
  • FF6
  • Skyrim
  • RE2
  • Mass Effect

Same with me too actually, i feel i am one of the few in here who played those old woody type consoles with a joystick that came with 5 pre installed games. I also agree that there was a lot of games this generation than any other, while most people tend to quickly dismiss it, they fail to realize it is the consumers who are actually way too spoilt for choice and limit themselves to recycled shooters and sports games. This particular year alone, i have gone from Journey, Gone Home to TLOU to Puppeteer to FIFA14 to MGS Rising among many other games and i am looking to playing Beyond Two Souls, saying this generation does not have awesome games is like being that old grand paa complaining how modern music is not how they used to be on those oversized record cases

It is not unlikely that all of my top 10 games would be from this gen. However it's probably around 8. Not surprising since the quality of games is increasing with time.

2. Among Thieves and Gears of War.

Since I have not played many new releases, my answer is due to change. I can see GTAV, Beyond:TS and TLoU moving some older titles out of their spots.

Video games are getting better all the time, and many don't tend to age well. I'm sure most of my top ten is made up of current gen games.

30 years gaming here... I'd say a few. Bioshock, The Last of Us & Uncharted 2... those 3 games are probably the most memorable from this past gen. I was a HUGE fan of Mass Effect until ME3 came along. I'd say Mass Effect would be in my top 10 as well. The first one... before it got dumbed down and lost its RPG'ness and became more of a 3rd person shooter with lite RPG elements.

SO yeah... Mass Effect, Bioshock, TLOU & Uncharted 2

@NaveedLife said:

gaming 10 years isn't a ton longer than this gen has been happening, but still a good question. I have been gaming for almost 20 years.

2 games this gen break my top 10. Uncharted 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Same here exactly.

Sadly? I can't think of a single one. Innovation and originality has left the building a long time ago. Gaming now days is kind of like top 40 music. The sales windows are very similar as well. Games aren't measured by quality anymore. They are measured by release date.

There are so many classic games that are to good to knock of the list.

Im having enough trouble as it is just making a top ten. Then you have to consider is this personal or objective.

I'll just make it personal and say yes, there are games from this generation that would make it into my top ten. Halo 3 makes it in. LA Noire, Gears of War and Batman: Arkham Asylum probably make the cut too

Mass Effect 2 and Uncharted 2 are the only 2 that definitely would. Possibly Arkham City and MGS4 too, but I felt that there were more great games last gen as opposed to this one.

Honestly I really can't mention any, there are simply too many amazing games I have played. The second I'd start listing some, I'd have to rethink them because I'd need to make room for others, and so on and so forth.

Anno 2070
FTL
World of Warcraft
Kerbal Space Program
Battlefield series
Crysis series
Halflife series

Plus, I am not really sure what a "gen" is...

From the PS3/360/Wii era?

The Last of UsTomb Raider
Dragon Age Origins
Fallout 3

Can't really think of many others, but to be fair, I only actually started gaming current gen titles earlier this year.

Oblivion & Skyrim

GTA4 & GTA5

World of Warcraft all the way up to the Lich King

Guild Wars 1 & 2

Torchlight 1 & 2

Battlefield Bad Company 1 & 2 & Battlefield 3

Dragon Age 1

I think that's more than 10 actually, but those are the ones that stand out to me this gen.
