dude STFU already, console generations are defined by power, basically what nintendo did with the orginial wii was launch a repackaged gamecube and added motion controls to get  sheep like you to buy it and call it nextgen, its not.  consoles are basically about power and controller, nothing else, the wii u is a nextgen nintendo system buts not a nextgen console because there is no real leap from ps3/360.

its not that hard really, we've come to expect a 10-15x jump in all 7 generations of console gaming, only the wii and wiiu didn't follow that trend. computers don't have a generation they are always evolving. consoles only evolve every 5-7 years.

A new system can add more new features, or improve on features already present on the predecessor. It could offer other alternative, perhaps innovative ways of playing games (whether this way is executed well or something you'd like is another story). There are other ways game systems can surpass their predecessors than just proverbally slapping a new paint of graphics on the a system.

A super computer can be a pc. A pc can be turned into a console, if you just make it closed. 

It's all just technology packaged a certain way. We could package a really expensive console that is closed and equivalent to a super computer. Granted, it will be expensive and large. Regardless, my point is that companies choose how much tech goes into a console based on the market. The consumers will buy things that are valuable in the their eyes. This is what dictates the next generation. Companies offered touch screens, people bought it. Companies offered motion controls, people bought it. Companies offered 3D, people bought it.

It's a dynamic market in which power can be a selling point, but it's not what defines it. The consumer and industry define it. The next generation is what ever is released next. People will vote with their wallets if the companies lives to see out the generation and into the next.

That's all it is.

I tend to agree with the TC. Since the beginning of consoles about 30 years ago, every new generation has seen a significant increase in power over the previous. It has always been the main advancement and has been what defines a next gen system for the most part. Just because the Wii and now Wii U bucked this trend doesn't mean it has been nullified.

Generations are based on when new Consoles come out for the major Console manufacturers. Nintendo released the Wii U, Sony will release the PS4, and MS will release the Xbox 720 (or whatever it's called). Those are all next generation consoles. But their power is irrelevant because, regardless of what people say, they are all part of the new release of Consoles (aka Next generation consoles).

Eh, Nintendo said it best whilst DC'ing the under powered Wii early this gen by saying it's new gen, not next gen. :cool:

So err,... what was going during the whole PS1/PS2 generation? Coz all of my best experiences certainly weren't defined by the Xbox/GCN's superior RAM/CPU.

But then again PC gamers have been saying similar things about 360/PS3 for years and will continue to do so about PS4/720 after they release. Everything is outdated!
