I've seen the confusion on the boards about Demon's Souls and it's time to settle. There's 2 camps of thought.

1) Demon's Souls was made in Japan so that makes it a JRPG! It's all about where it originated!

2) Demon's Souls has WRPG gameplay and a WRPG setting! It just happened to be developed by a Japanese company!

personally, I feel that the JRPG/WRPG labels refer to traditional gameplay elements and not necessarily where the game originated from. If a Canadian dev made an RPG with strict turn-based battles driven by menus with an emphasis on level grinding and a diverse band of tweens that embark on a quest to save the world from certain doom while discovering friendship & self-worth in a linear story... I'd still consider it a JRPG.

i always though JRPG's standed for rpgs made in japan, but dosent seem like everyone thinks so

i would call DS a JRPG since i dont consider JRPG's a style,

games like earthbound and mario RPG are JRPG's but they dont have the same type of gameplay as most JRPGs do

so that means DS is a JRPG aswell

I love Demon's Souls, and aside from some voice acting oddities and the interesting presentation of death, everything seems overwhelmingly western. I mean, it doesn't even have any spiky haired teenagers!

why differentiate RPGs based on where they were developed from? Other genres don't use the country-of-origin as a distiction. You never hear about a JFPS or a WRTS, or a EuropeanMMO. Would it make more sense for the JRPG/WRPG labels to indicate traditional gameplay elements?

It doesn't follow any of the jrpg norms, no anime style, no squad based combat, no turn based combat, no regular japanese styles. It's a wrpg made in japan in my opinion.

Does it honestly matter? I've already put almost 100 hours and moved on. To be completely honest, it doesn't play like a WRPG OR a JRPG. It plays like a Dungeon Crawler. Where's the option for that?

but why differentiate where the game was made? no one does it for other genres. No one says God of War is a W-Action/Adventure and Devil May Cry is a J-Action/Adventure.

RPG are broken into sub-genres based on it's gameplay not on the nationality of the person that worked on it.

How racist can you people be?

Those who deny A have either never played a WRPG, Demon's Souls, or are Japanese/Asian patriots. Simple. Demon's Souls borrows everything from WRPGs but then bases it around some console Action RPG mechanics.

I just read the comments. I was right. Too many people think JRPGs means made in Japan. That's true but it's "evolved" to mean the Japanese-style or should I say Ultima 3 remakes with prettier graphics.

Europe = Western In fact, Japan is considered a Western thinking country considering they've adopted the capitalism and culture from America/West. Still, really, JRPG means Asian and Western means ... well .. mainly white but with some minorities ... I guess .. Kind of stupid, I know.

Demon's Souls is an action-RPG, so it belongs to the wRPG subgenre. It doesn't have the necessary elements to be considered a jRPG. A jRPG isn't simply a RPG made in Japan. It's a subgenre with it's own characteristics.

WRPG is not a sub-genre, action RPG is, or should we start calling the "Tales" series WRPGs?

Um what? It's made in Japan, so you could say that it's technically a JRPG, but that's just ridiculous. If Final Fantasy was made by Bethesda it wouldn't suddenly become a WRPG.

JRPG and WRPG refers to genres, not location, I can't believe so many people picked option 2. Just unbelievable.

The game is a WRPG through and through.

JRPG is a stereotype.

Because its a politically incorrect generalization of all RPGs released from Japan on the assumption that they are all anime-themed, turned based adventure games with random encounters. Rather than naming the games in correspondance to its own individual merits; most journalistic publications summed it up as JRPG by both it's national roots and unique design. But now and days, the nationalily portion of it is no longer part of the definition because we are more politically correct.

In short, when you say a game is a JRPG, its not because its made by Japanese people. Its because it follows the unique conventions of older RPGs, like turned-based combat, anime themes and randam encounters.

It's no different from Anime coined from idea of Japanese Animation. Yes it's technically animation designed by Japanese, but now and days it's defined but it's unique design not it's national origin.

Incorrectly so, considering that not all anime share these traits. Ignorant viewers from other countries are merely placing shounen stereotypes on the entire anime platform.

Are we really debating whether JRPGs and WRPGs are genres, not strictly determined by which region produced it? Wow. I guess Devil May Cry is a JAG (Japanese Action Game)? Let's just start prefacing every single genre with the letter of the nation which produced it.... lol

I agree. It's the stupidest way of classifying something. How can anyone not think "American Japanese RPG" sounds goofy?

Yeah, I agree with that, but as it stands right now when people discuss JRPG they mean a genre.

Sure. But from now on I want YOU and EVERYONE ELSE to start calling ALL BIOWARE RPGs "Canadian Role Playing Games". I appreciate it. Thanks!
