[QUOTE="AncientDozer"][QUOTE="toast_burner"]I agree. It's the stupidest way of classifying something. How can anyone not think "American Japanese RPG" sounds goofy? Yeah, I agree with that, but as it stands right now when people discuss JRPG they mean a genre.I think we should abandon the JRPG and WRPG nonsense all together.
Japan isnt a genre niether is western
Hahadouken
The only people I see that do that are people that look into video game genres.
[QUOTE="Blue-Sky"] Incorrectly so, considering that not all anime share these traits. Ignorant viewers from other countries are merely placing shounen stereotypes on the entire anime platform.Vandalvideo

I agree with you three. Both the anime and JRPG classification came from a less politically correct era. But these terms are too installed into our culture to get rid of. I still call Japanese animation, Anime even if though the term itself is ridiculous.

WRPG- RPG made by western dev team
JRPG- RPG made by japanese dev team.
AncientDozer
Wrong.
Why don't you try googling those terms.
Who says? You? A couple hardcore elitists? Realize that the average person doesn't go any further than "is it anime-ish" and "does it come from Japan". I crap you not, buddy. And, honestly, the way nhh18 puts it is the way it ought to be. Locations aren't the defining factors of the genre. What happens if an American team makes what you guys consider a "JRPG"? It's an American Japanese RPG now? Do you understand how dumb that sounds? It'd just confuse people. No, nhh18 has it the better way. Japanese RPGs come from Japan and Western RPGs come from the West. Anything else just sounds ridiculous. Think of it this way: Does DS borrow more from Western-made RPGs or Japanese made RPGs? The choice is obvious.This is how I classify RPGs:

Did you make that up, or got it somewhere on the internet? Because thats just wrong buddy.

I think it's stupid to add a pre-fix to some RPGs and then call others "X genre with elements"
Like for instance, you said ME2 was a TPS with RPG elements, but since when does an RPG is cIassified by the type of weapon the hero uses? Or even what camera angle? Most RPGs of yesterdecade were in first person....
[QUOTE="Hahadouken"][QUOTE="bobaban"]Ok I guess Action RPG = WRPG in this thread.xsubtownerxAre we really debating whether JRPGs and WRPGs are genres, not strictly determined by which region produced it? Wow. I guess Devil May Cry is a JAG (Japanese Action Game)? Let's just start prefacing every single genre with the letter of the nation which produced it.... lol Sure. But from now on I want YOU and EVERYONE ELSE to start calling ALL BIOWARE RPGs "Canadian Role Playing Games". I appreciate it. Thanks! Can do. I live in Edmonton after all. ;) Want me to pass along a message?

Yeah, and the only people discussing model airplanes are people on model airplane forums? LOLWUT? What are we talking about, if not people who look into video game genres? It's not like Joe Sixpack even knows what a "genre" is. :lol:[QUOTE="RyuRanVII"]

I'm happy with just calling it an RPG... but then you end up having to explain the hell out of it. RPG doesn't tell you anything. You'll end up saying "its a tactical. turn-based RPG with _____ elements" etc etc.
If my friends say "JRPG" or "WRPG" I can immediately wrap my head around it, and then I'm at least in the ballpark.

JRPG = RPG made by a Japanese dev...thus, Demon's Souls = JRPG. Sure it has a ton of western elements, but it's still a JRPG.killab2oo5
So much ignorance. :(
You do know killab2oo5 that the games genre is dependent only on it's elements.
I wonder how long until a geme's genre is determined by the media it's on.

Does that mean Kingdom Hearts and FFvsXIII are WRPGs as well? How about Tales of Vesperia or Eternal Sonata? If the only classification is whether the combat is "action" or not, then there'd be a ton more WRPG.Demon's Souls is an action-RPG, so it belongs to the wRPG subgenre. It doesn't have the necessary elements to be considered a jRPG. A jRPG isn't simply a RPG made in Japan. It's a subgenre with it's own characteristics.

why differentiate RPGs based on where they were developed from? Other genres don't use the country-of-origin as a distiction. You never hear about a JFPS or a WRTS, or a EuropeanMMO. Would it make more sense for the JRPG/WRPG labels to indicate traditional gameplay elements?shaggygrosserYes this exactly.
So do you call God of War a WAG (Western Action Game) because it was dev in the US and Devil May Cry a JAG (Japanese Action Game) because it was dev in Japan? No? Didn't think so. So why use the same logic with RPGs?WRPG- RPG made by western dev team

So why use the same logic with RPGs? Because those terms are used to classify RPGs mostly. Just like how you usually hear the terms J-Rock and J-Pop but not "J-Trance" however your GOW/DMC assertion should be correct, but those terms are just not broadly used.WRPG- RPG made by western dev team

JRPG and WRPG refers to the style of the game.
If it quacks like a duck, looks like a duck and is a WRPG then its a WRPG, it doesn't matter where it was made.
^ this. Japanese architecture is still referred to as Japanese even if it is built in the United States. Same idea really.JRPG and WRPG refers to the style of the game.

WRPG to me. I think the most important thing is the game itself, not the country it was made in. Using names based on location leads to way to many problems. Korean RPGs won't be jRPGs then. So Magna Carta isn't jRPG, but Magna Carta 2 suddenly is one. Games like Witcher, Mount and Blade or King's Bounty suddenly can't be counted as wRPGs becase they were made in eastern europe. Too much mess, so I will stick to
jRPGs = japanese style RPGs
wRPGs = western style RPGs
Too logical for SW.....reboot immanent...........core melting...............I think we should abandon the JRPG and WRPG nonsense all together.

Does it honestly matter? I've already put almost 100 hours and moved on. To be completely honest, it doesn't play like a WRPG OR a JRPG. It plays like a Dungeon Crawler. Where's the option for that?mythrol
