GS review quote:

"There can be a surprising amount of strategy involved, from knowing when and how to attack to ensuring that the terrain of the sometimes over-the-top levels works for you rather than against you. But all that said, Brawl is an incredibly well-balanced game in which even a brand-new player can come away the victor against a hardened veteran. "

How the heck can a "fighting" game be " incredibly well-balanced" when a brand new player can come away with a win agaist a hardened veteran.

This is the kind of complete crap Nintendo can get away with. If Virtua Fighter 5 Online came with a combat system that someones girlfriend that had never played the game before could pick up the controller and win agaist some that has played the seires since its N64 days it would be laughed at.

You know what...... what ever..... I dont even care anymore... let gaming die the same way that pop and hip-hop now rule the music industry.... creativity dies and mass produced easy to hear crap for the masses becomes the norm... way to go MTV generation....

He can win via luck on item draws and such. Once again, and option you can turn off. It is options that make it deep yet universal.

Agreed. That's what makes it so balanced. When a friend comes around, if you own the game, your almost certainly going to beat them. It's good to hear that they have a fair chance.

Talk about elitist.sexy_chimp

What the hell is elitist about having something compared fairly?

Its one thing to say "This is a game that people will have fun with, and is great for partys and we love it"

Its another thing to say "Its is an incredibly well-balanced game in which even a brand-new player can come away the victor against a hardened veteran."

Can you explain that to me? And still say SSBB is still a fighting game not a party game? And then say that Gamespot did not change the whole review system that they used to use just so mass market Wii crap could still get good scores without 3 of the 5 prime scores being factored in?

Whats the point of games ever moving forward when you can just put out party games and make millions?????

Why would anyone want to make good music when you can just be Jessica Simpson and become a millionare?

Why make artful thought provoking films when you can make Spider-Man and break all movie records.

Its not even the gaming industrys fault... its peoples fault... people are ok with mindless crap, and good for them.

no wonder america is in such bad shape.

You know nothing about Smash Bros. and it's tournament scene.

The game isn't as rediculously deep as GGXX or VF series, but it's up there still.

The reviews don't play at tournament level, they play at casual level. You are making a mountain out a mole hill.

It simplely means that new player has a greater chance to stand up against veterans and regulars of the series. Jump in, and learn the basics and have a chance to win. Something wrong with that? It has that right stuff to help aid in having fun against whoever and perhaps a win and there.

Seriously, stop grabbing for straws. If someone wanted to have a serious fight, you just customize all the options to take away the little added perks like items.

Actually not terribly true. There's a load of mind tricks you can play. Best of 5s can often be skill :P

Anyways, yeah. What they're talking about is that there's options ot make it either way. Unlike other fighters, there's many elements that can be turned on and off.

You're just mad because the game didn't flop, like you were hoping, and instead is a better game than the playstation 3 has, period, and talk about AAA exclusives? Yeah, we got those too. Not to mention sales.

You know, I would be upset if I were you, as well.

Cry more, Brawl is the best fighter ever released. You should respect that, if you consider yourself "hardcore" instead of fanboying out because you like your PS3 too much, but it ain't doing good. Your little eyes wonder over the the Wii, who has nothing but win after win, and you say to yourself, "That could be me if it wasn't for Brawl."

Then you get yourself excited like it might flop.

Then it doesn't.

Man, I bet you and so many others had SEVERE dissapointment.

Hey, somebody's gotta do the owning around here. Might as well be the winners.

By the way what you are implying the review said, and what it actually said are 2 different things.

It said that the overall game is very well balanced, but with Smash Bros. BRawl there is an added twist with the maps you play on. THey are very active and lead to different scenarios. Adding a new layer of strategy to them. In many ways you can turn those negatives into something in your favor.

Where a person cant match a player in control speed, he can get a great equalizer with being more strategic than the other player and using the level to his advantage.

This is a matter of depth to the game nobody will give it credit for. Part of getting good at smash bros will be not only getting good with the character skills, but getting good with every map and getting used to every scenario.

But you know you could just go on and throw a hissy fit. I mean its not like BRawl was getting high scores anywhere else or something. Its not like Smash Bros. has earned its spot among the best fighters in some of the most prestigious fighting game tournaments.

No its just been a game that sells alot. No fame for anything else. /sarcasm.

To be fair on the TC, Gamespot did kind of screw up that line in their review. They should have made it clear that they meant with items. Unless they actually did mean that a noob could beat a pro in tournament conditions in which case... :|

Still, TC, you should really give your Smash Bros. hate a rest, tonight of all nights.

So it should be totally impossible to win against anybody who's played longer, ever? Sounds like an MMO. Veteran's can get beaten by button mashers in Soul Calibur because the inputs aren't too fussy and the player isn't thinking. If you are really a pro you will never get beaten by a button masher in SC.

If you play with ITEMS. If you want competitive skilled fighting, you play without them.

Items give a sense of "anyone can win".

No, its just because its something that everyone is familiar with, is easy to do, and doesnt require any work to feel like your successful.

Be happy and be a winner.

Wow, it speaks latin!

Now, why did you decide to speak that particular piece of latin, other than to make yourself sound smart?

Also, what the hell was the english part of your post about, either?

because if very nicely sums up Nintendo's idea of how to regain its once dominant share of the market without having to actually compete with its rivals.

Its actually fairly brilliant on their part from a marketing and corporate veiwpoint.

turn items off, and the beginner literally has NO chance against a veteran

its not like soul caliber, where a veteran can get beaten by a button-masher who has never played the game before

lol... no comment on that

It's actually worse in DoA. Most people that I fought in Soul Calibur, I could beat, especially if they were new. I've never been beaten in soul calibur by a noob.

ACtually if you put items on, beginners can easily win. Without items it's another story. In the review they probably reflected to the items turned on. With Final Smash and Hammer it sort off is 1hit kill.

Funny, In DoA2 no one touches me if they don't know how to play, the counter mechanic pretty much screws anyone who tries to button mash... Soul Calibur on the other hand, even though I'll win MOST of the time, agaisn't some types of button mashers I tend lose a bit...

Maybe if you got off your elitist throne and realized that Brawl is very balanced. You can use handicaps, turn off items, tons of things to even it out or get rid of the lucky hammer that the noob keeps getting. That's what makes Brawl fun to me in my opinion. Even if you're horribly bad or amazingly good, you can still have a good time with others depending on the options you set.

I do kinda know what they mean with the whole, a newbie can beat a veteran thing. If you play with smash balls, the dragoon and assist trophies they can make a huge difference. Ive played a couple of games of SSBB against a friend of mine who always used to beat me. And not in the way that we both had one life left. But in the way that I managed to hit him out of the arena once or sometimes not even once.

Anyway, I played some matches against him with assist trophies, smash balls and the dragoon and because of this I actually managed to play some games that came to the point where we both had just one life left (and I sometimes even won). Especially when I used Sonic (who is hella fast) and he was Ike (who is hella slow), in those games I had no problems getting the smash balls or the assist trophies before he did.

But considering I already played SSBB a several weeks before I played it with him this can obviously be explained with the fact that:

1. I got better
2. He played less SBB in the past couple of months so he got a bit worse
3. He didnt know the game yet. Even though the basic gameplay is the same in SSBB and SSBM, there are quite some differences. So I suppose you could say that even veterans drop a few levels before they get complete understanding of the game.

The last thing was especially noticable. Because after playing the game for several hours, the only way for me to beat him was in the Sonic vs Ike games, or in any other game in which he used a new character he dint know yet.

"Incredibly well-balanced" as in no character is guaranteed a win against any other.

"in which even a brand-new player can come away the victor against a hardened veteran." as in the game is accessible enough that a new player can quickly comprehend the mechanics of the game and, as such, have a shot at winning a game against a pro.

I don't see any contradiction. Let me check again.

Nope, no contradiction.
