The charming Brits over at Kikizo sat down with Insomniac's Ryan Schneider the other day. Asked him a bunch of questions about Ratchet & Clank, and it sounds like Insomniac are rightly proud of their franchise. Also proud of R&C on the PS3, which I must say is looking pretty darn good. They're also proud of their originality as a company, though, and proud that it's influenced... Miyamoto and Super Mario Galaxy.
There's evidence all around us I think, of certain games that have borrowed from Ratchet and Clank. One that we're even extremely flattered by is Super Mario Galaxy, with their spherical worlds; we did spherical worlds in Going Commando, and Up Your Arsenal. It would be amazing to think that Miyamoto-san thought that was so cool that he wanted to incorporate it into Mario Galaxy. Granted, he's doing it in a different way, but it's still a spherical world, so it's flattering to see those sorts of things.
That Miyamoto, he's nothin' but a hack.

First off, super old. Second off, Miyamoto didn't even know what Ratchet and Clank was when he was told of the quote. He asked if it was a PC game.

Yup the above poster is correct. Way old, he didn't copy the design. He's had it in his head since the N64 days. Insomniac is taking too much responsibility onto themselves.

Ratchet and Clank isn't the first game to have spherical levels. But Super Mario Galaxy was the first game to use them to such an extent, and pull it off so succesfully.

Miyamoto on R&C:

It's not an idea we got from anywhere else. I'm sorry but I have to admit that I've never seen the game in question. Is it a PC game?Shigeru Miyamoto

That was a pretty dumb comment from Insomniac, though, considering that Miyamoto and Nintendo were already looking into spherical world development shortly after Mario 64, as part of the fabled "Mario 128". Long before the first R&C was even conceived.

Whoever said that should make a deal with Ursula so that he loses his voice and never says anything like this again. Oh, and cut off his hands and wrap them in bandages so he can't write out the message (in blood, if need be).

What about the big ego? Insomniac thinks that their game is so godly, that Nitendo had to steal ideas they touched upon in two games (ideas that weren't even original in those games, given that they date back to Yoshi's Island) for their own game, a game that's been in development for many years.

It wouldn't have been so bad if he had just wondered aloud if maybe Miyamoto was influenced. But he didn't, he basically said he was influenced, and even called it "flattering". It's almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy. He convinced himself that Miyamoto took influence from R&C for Mario Galaxy and then said he was flattered by it... flattered by his own convincing of himself. It's quite funny if you think about it.

I believe a Sony fan would say that won't count. I'm sure one dumbass will. I'm sure this will, something in development since 2001, hell, maybe even 1997 (128 was discussed as the sequel to 64). And when did Ratchet and Clank come out? 2002.

*Sigh* Sick of this retarded "lemming" (not the faction here) mentality... just because one person at Insomniac said that DOESN'T MEAN THE WHOLE DAMNED COMPANY AND ALL ITS PERSONEL DO! You'd think this'd be common knowledge... you know, like, 3RD GRADER knowledge... jesus christ. System Wars is... special.

Actually Galaxy came from Mario 128, the same place where Sunshine came from.

All Miyamoto cares about (in the gaming industry) is making fun games, he couldn't care less about what his competion is doing. And yet he consistantly makes some of the best games ever.

Yea, we're actually flattered by Babylonian baker and his idea to slice bread. It seems like a compliment that he'd want to use our ideas of bread sheets in his food. We came up with that idea long ago, and quite frankly, we love that he came up with something so good that people will compare the quality of things to it. So your tyring to say PC has no platformers? You might want to do some research and retract that statment before someone quotes you on it.

I'm amazed he can make those "great" games without, at least according to him, comparing his to those other games. He could just be playing a game to pretend like he didn't know about the series, I dunno, very popular series, you'd think as a developer he'd at least look at his competition.

He's never payed attention to the competition. Do you remember Mario becoming a fast, attitude-laden speed-demon in the 90's? NO! That's why he's so great: Miyamoto doesn't sell out. He knows what makes a game great.
