Not that I believe this is true, no one can say for sure, but he does got one thing right, and I completely agree with the other thing that is mentioned in the title of this fascinating article

Iown a Wii and I am insanely underwhelmed by their library. All in all the Wii has been a pretty big disappointment. The Famitsu article about 7 of 10 Wii owners not playing isn't the least bit far fetched. Nintendo needs some serious help on they're games. I know they have a TON of stuff coming out over the next year, but honestly most of it junk. It's never good when a First Party game like Metroid has such lackluster sales. Casuals that made the Wii explode are ultimately hurting it.

Yeah it is an overpriced Gamecube with the same kind of library (as in %90 of the good games are Nintendo's). It deserves to do no better than the Gamecube but the Wiimote gimmick does attract people. It's likely to come in first just because it has so much hype right now and PLENTY of room to drop the price (probably to $99 today and they'd still not lose money). The Wii is in such a separate category it can just never ever be the dominant gamers platform though.

But yeah nice non-biased article.

It's possible it wil lbe #3.

Don't look at it now with the hardware sales. Look at it in 2009/2010. I really believe PS3 will switch places with Wii. It won't be #1 in hardware sales, but will boost up once things like Home and more games come along. And I dont see the Wii improving the horrible 3rd party support.

Grrr I wish the ignorance would stop. Metroid Prime games have never sold well. Metroid Prime 3 is selling better than Metroid Prime 1 and 2 were at this point. It has nothing to do with "teh casuals"

lmao.. when did metroid prime 3 have lackluster sales? i think you may mean metroid 2, because part 3 sold pretty well. you know a game sold well, when it actually made it to the top 3 best selling game.

Metroid Prime 3 is barely past 500,000k in sales. That is not selling as well as Nintendo wants.

Halo 3 made that on the first night of preorders. (actually WAY more than that) I know MP3 is not released worldwide yet, but past MP games show that Europe and Japan don't really add that much to the total. A majority of the sales are in North America, and seeing that it's sold in NA now, sales aren't so hot. Red Steel and Mario Party 8 is selling better than an established franchise like Metroid, which was supposed to be one of the big 3 titles from the Wii.

I am not saying MP3 is not fun or anything, but that the sales are not as good as people would've liked. Maybe blame this on marketing, or maybe people make way too much out of motion controls and how revolutionary it is. Dual analog isn't stopping people from making Halo 3 the top selling game of the year.

More ignorance, thanks.

How do you know what Nintendo "wants?" Do you work at Nintendo?

Metroid Prime 3 has only been released in AMERICA. Red Steel and Mario Party 8 sold a little over a million. Do you really think that Metroid Prime 3 won't surpass that when its only released in America?

And please don't compare it to Halo. Halo appeals to casuals, of course it will sell well. Metroid Prime does not appeal to casuals, so its lucky to get the sales it does.

MP3 is selling faster than MP2, of course Nintendo didn't want that

Oh, and Metroid is just as big in Europe, as it is in the US. And Metroid is still selling 20k a week in the US, so your point is moot.

You fail time and time again with this...

MP has never sold extremely well. The series doesn't sell as well as casual gams. Halo is a casual game. So is Mario Party. Not saying they are the same type of games, but they both appeal to casuals.

3rd in what sense? Games?

It already is, it has a lackluster library.

Sales?

Not a chance in hell, it's already in 1st and the PS3 would have to do some serious crazy selling to even apporach an area that would be considered "catching up."

Not really true. MP sold 1.5 million in the US alone.

Echoes was a little worse, 500,000 copies in two weeks. Still a decent seller though.

Those aren't "bad" sellers by any means.

I never said they were bad. I specifically didn't want to say that because they aren't bad sales.

And I would imagine that MP sales are from Metroid making a return...

Does anyone have sales figures other than those of VGchartz. They are rather sketchy...

But Bioshock is selling about the same on 360 as MP3 is selling on Wii. Halo 3 is a casual game and its marketing budget was probably 10 times what most games cost to make, so it is not surprising that it is selling extremely well.

From another thread someone did this simple calculation -

1) According to VGCharz there are about 5mil Wii's and 7.4mil 360's in NA.

2) In the first 5 weeks of release Bioshock sold about 780K while MP3 sold 482K in NA.

3) Now if you work out the percentages they both come up to about 10% of the respective consoleuserbase getting those games.

Yes I know VGcharz is not completely accurate but it is accurate enough for an approximation. Bioshock has sold a lot more because it is also available in europe and the 360 install base in America is bigger than Wii's. Per console that the game is available to they are selling near equal.

Doesn't work like that.

It's not like you can take a system with a userbase off 100 milllion that had a 10 million selling game and say that a system with a userbase of 20 million and a 2 million selling game had "the same sales" (because they both had an attach rate of 10% of the total userbase.)

It doesn't work like that - at the end of the day one sold 7 million and one sold 2 million.

“Metroid,” for us, has sold better than we even expected, given that we know it didn’t have a long lead-up of conversation about it. The sales on it have maintained at a pretty strong level. So I think we’re impressed. It’s getting a lot of word-of-mouth and some pretty good reviews.Perrin Kaplan Nintendo VP of Marketing
