Found this interesting article on Eurogamer where Beambox founder and ex-BioWare dev, Trent Oster disses the Wii and Nintendo.

I didn't know Nintendo had stingy requirements like that. Withholding payment till 6000 copies are sold? :S

What say SW on this?

The more important part is where he says "Nintendo isn't a good platform for developers"

Whenever someone says that, I wonder if they have ever heard of an "adult toy", or more commonly, "sex toy". I find it funny when the word "toy" is conflated to childhood, or children... as if "adult" is a term of approval.

even real cars, boats and planes can be considered as toys under certain circumstances , all consoles are definitely toys imo , the wii is just a less powerful toy compared to the others , thats porbably what the bioware guy ment

and the Xbox 360 and PS3 are not?

LOL the only system that can't really be called a toy is the PC because it's mostly used as a tool if anything. But I've heard that Tools can be called "Toys" too.

Developers should just say they hate Nintendo and go on with life.

According to many developers, the Wii's online store had a very small file-size limit and Nintendo's online policy was very strict/poor. These are the guys who did the MDK2 remake/port for the Wii.

It could be that but I think it has to do with the poor experience between the devs and Nintendo.

I don't know why companies don't bend over backwards more to make developers happy.

See, now Nintendo's 'my way or the highway' attitude has alienated a developer to the point they don't want to work with the company again.

The Man-Child nature of developers is rather amusing. What makes a video game console manly for them to develope for?

"Overhaul Games last year ported third-person shooter MDK2 to WiiWare, adding in motion controls. " Whaaa, our port of a 15 year old game didn't do that well, whaaa. Nintendo has been known to be stingy when it comes to Wiiware, but does that make their console a lesser one? Not really. It makes it less attractive to developers sure, and they need to fix that, and if they do I wouldn't be surprised to see games from them in the future with an "Oh yeah, well, they changed it so it's cool now" sort of attitude.

Why should Nintendo, Sony, and MS bend over for developers? Their job is to sell the product to the consumers and make them happy. Not the other way around.

The Wii has similar specs to the original Xbox and BioWare had no problem putting SW: KoToR, and Jade Empire on there, though this one guy does not represent the entire company he used to work for.

Nintendo doesn't care about 3rd parties(*insert kanye west pic*) and neither do their fanboys that only buy nintendo games.Apparently their DD rules are so strict(No sales, no demos etc.) that it had a negative impact on sale and caused the service as a whole to stagnate. At least on wii/dsi, but I hear they've made changes with 3ds.

All consoles are toys, as are games.

I usually think of something like a guitar (unless you play professionally) or a motorcycle as a toy as well. I mean, if you buy something to attain casual pleasure from it, and it isn't useful outside of providing that sense of pleasure, it is a toy, no?

But they are also competing with each other. So if they keep devs happy and make life easier, they will have more products to compete with. If the competition is getting the developers because you are being too strict, you are going to have problems.

It's not just about keeping the consumers happy, because it's more of a partnership with different parties that bring these products to market.

You'd think sheep would understand this by now after 3 console generations of abysmal 3rd party support.

Having a threshold (6000 sales) with the Wii probably isn't a good idea because of their poor online deployment. With Steam, XBL and Playstation store, they could probably do that and it'd work.

Maybe you should try improving your comprehension skills, or at the very least brush up on the definitions of downloadable games and DLC. Unless you equate DD games with incomplete ones.

Nintendo has conditioned its userbase to only buy their games on their systems. You see it constantly on this forum. 3rd parties will once again invest into nintendo's console platform for 2-3 years, hitting the nintendo ip wall and then watch their games under perform. It it's not nintendo then the only hope for success is shovelware like party games, whatever the latest hit children's IP is or low budget core titles that can survive off selling 100-300k. I don't see those low budget core games like muramasa or nmh being viable on wii u because of the increase in dev costs.

Wii u being the fourth nintendo console in a row with poor 3rd party support seems destined. Gamers will once again suffer droughts and wait 4-6 months for the next nintendo game to release. But sheep are cool with that because "they buy nintendo consoles for nintendo games".

the Wii doesn't even stack up to the PS2. If the PS2 came out this gen with motion controls and the same library it would massacre the Wii.

Maybe if gamers (don't just target the sheep, "gamers" are just as guilty at doing the SAME THING when it comes to owning Nintendo systems) actually GAVE Nintendo systems a fair chance when it comes to third party support, then we wouldn't have this problem. Nintendo can only do so much with getting support on their system and they NEED gamers to help them out.

Please elaborate. I could be wrong, but I don't see COD-style dlc in any nintendo game. Developers, I'm sure, love that consumer are willing to buy that stuff like crazy.

Heirren

I'm not sure how your post relates to the article. They never mentioned dlc being a problem. Unless the 40mb limit is for dlc and not the game itself like I originally thought.

The article is about the relationship between Nintendo and X developer. Stuff like dlc is going to factor into what is being said.

If DLC was never announced or planned for their game how can it factor into their experience with nintendo?

[QUOTE="nintendoboy16"]Yeah, they clearly don't care about third parties and yet they try to get support for their consoles. And why is it just Nintendo fanboys who get the blame for not buying third party products when mutliconsole owners who ALSO own Nintendo's systems do the SAME F***ING THING?!

nintendoboy16

If nintendo creates a system what is inferior technically(wii), lacks a unified online network on par with their competitors(wii and gc), and uses a storage medium that is too small/more expensive for devs and consumers(n64 and gc). Why would gamers buy x 3rd party game on x nintendo system if they own others?
