As long as no ones threatened, people should have 100% pure freedom to sling whatever hateful, racist, vulgar, idiotic things they want. I dont personally enjoy it, I like the option to mute people, which you dont have in real life. So its already luxurious enough, enough of this prudish thinking about banning and punishing people for saying things you dont like. **** deal with it.

You can't control what people say. All you can do is mute the people who annoy you, which on XBL is extremely easy. Or even better, just stick to a party of friends and talk with them. Hate speech corrodes life, not just online video games. I hear racism etc. out in the real world as well, yet i dont expect a cop to be on hand to shut the person up. Who cares. Anjunaddict
This. The mute option is there for a reason, it isn't Microsoft's job to control what people say.

You seem to think you have rights on a pay-for service. You don't. You have just as much 'right to free speech' using those companies online services as you do here at GameSpot. Now, try to fill a post here at GS with trash-talk and porn and see how far your rights extend.br0kenrabbit
Exactly, this has nothing to do with "freedom of speech" (especially in a First Amendment sense.) Online communities have every right to enforce standards without being sued (why, as you said, you can't fill a GS post up with vulgarities and porn, and then sue GS.)

False analogy. Cops in the real world can't enforce standards, online communities can.

The thing people are mistaking is that freedom of speech doesn't apply in this realm. PSN, XBL, and servers for PC games can all make their own rules and enforce them in the manner they wish. Because its a private domain.

XturnalS

"Freedom of speech" applies to government entities not censoring or restricting speech, not private businesses, groups, or individuals. If it applies to businesses, groups, or individuals, then Microsoft, GameSpot, and even us will be sued for suppressing it which will also violate our rights of speech as well. It would be a legal mess.

"Freedom of speech" should be interpreted by its spirit, not by the letter or else it will be counter-productive to a democratic society.

Tbh with the advent of Live and PSN it has gotten worse, I can safely say; after actively online gaming since the 90s. Saying that the worst have been Counter Strike, Halo 3 and Gears of War (haven't tried COD on consoles), off the top of my head; WoW for me wasn't bad at all. Mute buttons are a must for services like Live where mics are the only option. If the games actually had active moderators then things would improve dramatically. Alas it just isn't like the service side options on the PC. Otherwise while I mainly PC game online it really isn't that bad, on any game I play; however I tend to game with friends and talk over ventrilo.

Lol, speaking of muting, I remember when Resistance 1 just came out, I once muted everyone in an entire match because they were all singing the Pokemon theme song...:x
