It's been long enough into this generation that we can talk about how and where they stand with respect to one another. The first system of this generation came out in 2011, and the PS4 and Xbox One are both over two years old now. So it's been long enough that we can start discussing this- especially since a few systems of this generation are already beginning to wind down.

So- how would you rank the current generation systems? Personally, here's how I do it. I will not be including the PC in my rankings, because I don't have a gaming PC.

  1. NINTENDO 3DS
Honestly, the hardware is a bit crap (though at least the New 3DS line fixes that), and the system just doesn't feel nice- it does everything it can to make me not want to play it. But man, all of that takes a backseat to that lineup. Fire Emblem Awakening, Pokemon AlphaSapphire, Super Smash Bros., A Link Between Worlds, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Xenoblade Chronicles, Majora's Mask, Kid Icarus Uprising, Super Mario 3D Land... there's just a never ending stream of games on this thing, and it doesn't look like the 3DS has any plans to stop any time soon, either. I've rarely spent as much time on a system as I have on the 3DS, and I have done that in spite of the 3DS hardware being as shitty as it is. The system is really a gem, and it takes my spot for the best system this generation (so far).
  2. PLAYSTATION VITA
I adore the Vita. It's the exact opposite of the Nintendo 3DS in that I want to use it as much as I can, but it simply doesn't have enough software support to back that kind of desire. But I've still managed to squeeze so much use out of the Vita- Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, DanganRonpa, DanganRonpa 2, Hotline Miami, Velocity 2X, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, Final Fantasy X, Ys: Memories of Celceta, and of course, my favorite game of all time, Persona 4 Golden. The Vita doesn't have a lot of great games, but what it does have is simply exceptional. I adore the Vita, and it is probably the best piece of gaming hardware ever made. I doubt I will ever have as much fun with individual games as I did on the Vita ever again, and for that, it takes second place for me.
  3. WII U
The Wii U is like a mixture of the 3DS and the Vita- it doesn't give me much reason to want to use it, and it also doesn't have much desirability. What it does have is a killer lineup, one that's made me invest countless hours into the system, and one which has given me so much fun. Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros., Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros. U, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, The Wonderful 101, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, and of course, Spatoon, have all been exceptionally great games- and I haven't even gotten around to getting Xenoblade Chronicles X, Super Mario Maker, or Yoshi's Woolly World yet. Couple that with a surprisingly decent lineup of games this year, and I can't ignore the little guy- it's somehow managed to keep my attention all this time.
  4. PLAYSTATION 4
A year ago, the PlayStation 4 saw literally zero usage from me, and I struggled to justify my having spent $400 on it. That's changed since then, and I really appreciate the console- with games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Bloodborne, Rocket League, and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, it's hard not to give the system its due. The reason it ranks lower than the Wii U is because I still have far less reasons to play it than I do the Wii U, and I still don't enjoy quite as many games on it- of course, with how stacked the lineup is this year, it's probably going to gain on the Wii U and even the Vita. It's getting too much stuff for me to ignore it any longer.
  5. XBOX ONE
In all fairness, I haven't had much time with the Xbox One, so it ranking this low is more a matter of default formality than anything the system itself did wrong. I owned it for a few months, and realized it was a decent system, albeit one with no compelling reasons for me to want it (it still has none for me- I am waiting on ReCore and Scalebound to hopefully change that), which ultimately led to me divesting myself of it. It's a good system I am sure, and I would have a more informed opinion on it had I spent more time with it. I didn't, so I don't, and it ends at the bottom of my list by default as a result.

That's mine, then. How about you? How do you rank your systems, and why?

Based on what am i supposed to rank them tho? i only own 1 current gen console and 1 current gen handheld so does ranking systems i dont own count?

anyways:

  1. PlayStation 4: Easily the best console this generation, it is a system that provides entertainment beyond any other device this generation from games to features to social activities and many more! the PS4 introduced me a lot of great gamers through games like Destiny, FF14 and Sword Art Online.. thanks to the amazing Share feature in the PS4 my YouTube channel have started to grow very well
  2. PlayStation Vita: The PlayStation Vita is easily one of the best handheld gaming i have owned it is literally a TV screen on the go with great features and apps to communicate with friends on the go
  3. Nintendo 3DS: Good system to play pokemon on (dont own it anymore)
  4. Nintendo WIIU: It has decent games but zero interest in buying one
  5. XboxOne: I only ranked it in last place because its a last place device lol

I won't do handhelds, as my experience has been fairly limited over the course of the generation.

PC - Fairly self-explanatory. Largest selection of games both from this generation and others. I'm not big into PC-centric genres such as MMOs and RTS, but I do prefer to play games on the PC when possible.

PS4/Xbox- Both are pretty similar in the long-run... Especially in terms of worthwhile exclusives being offered. I do prefer the PS4 over the Xbox for the most part, largely due to performance benefits.

WiiU- Neat system, though it doesn't get anywhere near as much playtime as my others. Largely due to not having as many games that I enjoy, though i've really enjoyed 3D World and some Xenoblade.

PC: The superior hardware and gaming performance (true native 1080p and higher, higher graphics settings, higher frame rates not arbitrarily limited, etc...) is just the beginning; it goes on with boundless options of hardware components, multiple input variety, freedom of the games market, and killer prices that just can't be beat.

PS4: Best performance for the dollar, console wise. Still a slow start for library but plenty of promise on the very near horizon.

XB1: The runner up to the PS4, despite what fanboys say, still a good system with solid game offerings, and showing more prospect of strengthening its 1st party and exclusives support under its new dirtection. I also prefer its controller to the DS4, which I use (Lunar White edition) to game on my PC.

WiiU: Failing to jump start on the hype/innovation that the Wii experienced (motion controls fad has seen the last of those glory days) and failing even harder in the library, with exception of some rare 1st party titles like Mario Kart 8, but once again not drawing in the much needed 3rd party support. Nintendo once again drops in last place.

* aaaaaand I really don't care to rank the handhelds, I see them as operating in a different ecosystem from their home unit counterparts, and just not my bag.

PC, best versions of games and plenty of exclusives (and basically exclusive genres) for those that want them. Plus customization, sales, choice, ability to multitask and do so many other things places it well ahead of the crowd. Plus BC (BC is amazing despite what the naysayers suggest).

3DS, the only other current system that has enough games I'm interested to purchase (mostly because of fire emblem and pokemon).

Wii U, if this had a price drop below the $200 refurb version I'd be interested in purchasing it, as it has plenty of interesting games.

PS4/XBO, as of now there isn't much that distinguishes the two of these besides Bloodborne, (and honestly after 10+ hours of Dark Souls, I'm not sure Bloodborne would keep me interested despite the "amazing" gameplay). Thus right now they're tied. Looks like this year is the first chance PS4 has to break away from Xbox one, so we'll see if it does that successfully.

Since it's a given that PC gets top marks I think it goes Wii U>>>>XBONE>PS4 in terms of exclusives that have my interest for the consoles. I don't play handheld games.

"Objectively" from what I own and game on.

  1. PC
  2. PS4
  3. WiiU

My preference.

  1. PC
  2. WiiU
  3. PS4.

If I owned a Xbone it would be third on list one and fourth on list two. I'm skipping on it for now because it just has too much damn overlap with the PC and PS4. My PS4 already sits idle too much because of PC, no need having another box that does the same. Will reconsider if stuff like Scalebound and Recore measure up.

i dont have a PS4 or X1 yet. there just hasnt been enough exlcuive content on either one that interests me to get me to take the plunge. so those 2 will be down the bottom of the list. at the moment if i was to get one it would be the PS4.

so for me its

PC - where i get the multiplats and it also has its own selection of cracking games (warhammer total war is going to eat my life). the greatest selection of games on the bst device to play games on imho...its a bloody hard system to top.

Vita - i ran the numbers a few weeks ago...i have more vita games than 3DS games. im not sure how this has happened but it has. it is the best piece of mobile gaming hardware ever created and, with digging, many gems can be found. over the years i think i have put more play time into the vita than the 3DS. it's just such a shame the market didnt take more of a shine to it and sony dropped it like a stone :(. i dont think i will be buying any more games for it (2015 and 2016 were very quiet) though i probably should try this P4G everyone keeps raving on about :).

wii u - the system itself is awful. its a badly thought out system. its hook lacks a hook. nintendos games dont really use the unique elements of the sytem. if i was to only get one system per gen the wiiu wouldnt even be considered in the running. but its a brilliant compliment to another platform and it has a lot of great games...if you like nintendos games. im current playing X and nothing, not even my PC, is getting much play time. its an all encompassing monster.

3DS - i should be playing this more than i am....i dont know why. i would sink 100 hours into MH4 easily but i dont want to play it on a 3DS (hoping against hope at this stage that a wiiu version will be released). the hardware itself is quite poor. i'm not talking about horsepower either...it just feels badly constructed (this is the original one...i'm not bothered about the N3ds). i have a good few games for it but nothing is really grabbing my attention for some reason.

PS4 - i would get this before an X1 if i was to buy a consle today. there are a couple of games on the horizon that have my interest. but right now im not really tempted.

X1 - very little that interests me to be honest. If i was to buy an X1 today i cant think of anything i would actually buy for it.

  1. PC - Most games, most exclusives, best genre variety, best multiplats.
  2. Wii U - Enough good exclusives to pull me away from the PC at times.
  3. PS4 - Bloodborne.
  4. X1 - Got one for Christmas and it's still sitting in the box.

I'm not going to include the PC in my rankings because even though I have a powerful PC, I'm just not personally a fan of playing games on a PC. Objectively, it has many advantages, but subjectively, it's just not my thing; I prefer the console experience. This will change a bit in a few months when I receive the Oculus Rift, at least for games that I want to play in virtual reality.

1. Wii U - This console definitely has flaws such as being under-powered and having a crappy online service, but it has the most fun games of any of the current generation consoles and that is what matters most. Plus, not only does it have an excellent Wii U game library, but it also has full native backwards compatibility with the Wii and Gamecube (after unlocking it with homebrew), plus the virtual console service offering many of the best games from the NES, SNES, Genesis, GBA, and N64. All of this makes it the console that I play the most often and provides me the most fun. Not only is it my favorite current gen system, but I think it is going down as one of my top 5 favorite systems of all time.

2. Xbox One - It has the best controller and online service, so this is my go-to console for all multiplats, and it has more good exclusives than the PS4. I also enjoy using it for multimedia as well. Plus, Microsoft has been the best at listening to customer feedback and responding with continuous improvements over the past two years which earns them more points and gives me a very positive outlook for the future of the Xbox One.

3. 3DS- It has some great games, but crappy hardware. I also much rather play games on a console than a handheld when given the choice.

4. Playstation 4- It has an inferior controller and online service compared to the Xbox One which makes me avoid it for multiplats plus it has been weak on exclusives thus far as well which has led to me not even turning it on for the last few months and there is a good chance that I might not turn it on for another three months until Uncharted 4 is released.

5. Vita - My opinion of the Vita is the complete opposite of my opinion of the 3DS. I think the Vita has the best hardware ever for a handheld, but it's game library is just sad. I've been thinking about selling it.

I own all the current generation system; PC, home consoles, and handheld consoles. My ranking goes;

  1. PC - Spend like 88% of my gaming time playing on PC. Best and biggest library, best hardware, best controls, best everything. If I could go back to the beginning of the generation, I wouldn't have bought an Xbox One or PS4. Going from last generation to this generation, I was expecting the PC to get better, but it blew my expectations on how much development support it is getting.

  2. Wii U - The second most used platform for me, at like 5% of my game time. It is a Nintendo console and its only home based system that feels sort of unique. Usually only buy Nintendo games or games that use the Wii U's unique traits properly though, so I don't use it as much as my PC.
    _______

    The Dust Collector's

  3. Xbox One - My third most used platform, at like 3%. The only reason I bought an Xbox One was for Halo/Forza and this was the last console required to complete the collection. Since Halo 5 was meh, I can kind of regret buying the console now. Not many exclusives and I really don't use it anymore. It just sits there. :( But the controller is awesome.

  4. Playstation 4 - Fourth used platform, at like 2%. I was hyped into buying the PS4 because I loved the PS3 and all the unique games Sony brought forward. But the PS4 has been a disappointment. Not many exclusives that made me happy to have a PS4 other than Until Dawn and Bloodborne. Even then, those games didn't last enough enough and my PS4 has rarely been used since launch. I'm not even excited for Uncharted 4 with how little I've played the console. Seems like something I might play for a week and then go back to my PC for games. Kind of regret the console purchase as well, but hopefully it gets better this year.

  5. Nintendo 3DS - Fifth used platform at 1%. This is actually tied with the PS Vita. I used my 3DS a lot during the beginning of the generation and still consider it the best handheld. A lot of good games were released during the first half of its life, but now a days, I can't justify the game cost to keep playing it. Support for the console is still good but nothing that WOWs me into hyping a 3DS game. Also, I've gotten Pokemon fatigue finally. So even Pokemon can't keep me hooked to the console. Rarely use the console anymore.

  6. PS Vita - Similar thing as the 3DS. Good amount of games released in the first two years of its life but it has been dry ever since. Regret buying this handheld. Spent so much money on the console, memory card, and accessories for it to just sit there.

  1. PC - The PC will always be the gaming winner for me. Although I really do need to upgrade mine soon. Newer games are really starting to drag the system down.
  2. PS4 - The first current gen console I owned, and the one I own the most games on this generation.
  3. Xbone - I finally got one this past November, but it's moving up the ranking quickly. I've found some really good exclusives on it, and Phil and company are doing a great job supporting it.
  4. Wii-U - It was in 3rd place (maybe even 2nd at one point), but it's dropping along with Nintendo's support for the system. Without good exclusives there is really nothing else to play on the Wii-U.
  5. Vita - I can't remember the last game I bought for the vita. Now it's pretty much just used for free PS+ games at this point.
  6. 3DS - To be honest I really don't play it that much any more. It just doesn't seem to have any games coming out that I am interested in.

  • Wii U - honestly it's going to be in my top 5 period I think, just a unique console with good gems, no installs and less rampant dlc and patches compared to the competition. Still feels like a game console.
  • Ps4 - Better multiplat box with more exlusives than Xb1, and this year will be the first good year for it)
  • Xb1 - There's nothing I want on it atm, but if I couldn't have a Ps4 I would get an Xbone, not sure if i'll ever get one though)
  • PC - Not only game wise but because of not wanting digital games and it's a disjointed platform that issues can arise on. The less obstacles to playing games the better.
  • Vita - compared to the 3ds it feels like a pillow in your hands and was an up to date handheld, even if it didn't any exclusives I care about i'd still prefer it over the 3ds
  • 3DS - had one for 3 months, thought it was absolute trash :P Doesn't help that I don't like handhelds anymore, but the hardware and ergonomics are crap, and Pokemon is dead to me

Ps4

Wii U

I think aside from a few games, PC had the best year. Undoubtedly, it is a more expensive system but one that I believe is worth it.

Some hermits adding PC, when i'm sure most don't have the new hardware that came out now, or 2 minutes from now.

Why does that matter?

Not gonna include the PC for the sake of convenience, and only basing this on personal preference, nothing else.

1. 3DS: My favourite handheld system of all time, has an excellent library. Got to play some truly memorable games on the system, including- but not limited to- Fire Emblem: Awakening, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Pokemon AlphaSapphire. Just an amazing library all around and a great deal of variety too. Also the only system this generation so far where I don't have to lower my standards to say something genuinely positive about it.

2. PS4: Since I don't own an Xbox One yet, I attribute all the multiplats I've played and liked or loved to the PS4- this includes games such as The Witcher 3, Metal Gear Solid V, Batman: Arkham Knight and others. Also it has Bloodborne. Great controller (it's a factor, an important one, for me at least), good UI, and I play on this much more than I play on any other system I own.

3. Wii U: Actually has a pretty good library. Bayonetta 2, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Smash, SM3D World, Wind Waker HD, Splatoon, Xenoblade Chronicles X are just some of the games I've played and enjoyed on the Wii U.

4. PS Vita: I actually like this much more than I did a couple of years ago. I've come to realize that if you look past the AAA titles everyone expected the Vita to deliver, it actually has a decent library. Loads of good niche titles, a lot of RPGs to enjoy, some good Japanese visual novels, tons of good indie games, plus I use my Vita to play classic PSOne and PSP games a lot. So yeah, definitely not a purchase I regret. It's not what I expected (or wanted) it to be, but it's still good.

5. Xbox One: Because I don't have one.

  1. PS4 - Too many games and exclusives to boot.
  2. 3DS - pfff
  3. Wii U - Smash everyday, new Zelda, old Zelda and MK8
  4. PSVita - It's golden and them Japanese games.
  5. Xbox One - ewww. Own two physical game on it. No variety at all and the exclusives are mostly generic shooters. I usually don't put consoles on the shitlist but I'll do it here with the xbone. Everything decent that is on it are on other platforms too and they are superior elsewhere.

*I'd squeeze PC slightly ahead of Xbone. The support on it seems like pity releases. PSP/PS2 ports in 2015? No MK XL? Dragon's Dogma? lol

Ignoring PC and 3/4/5 are interchangeable for me

1/PS4-great exclusives and multiplats.

2/ 3DS-good selection of games though the capabilities and performance is weak.

3/XB1--multiplats and non gaming capabilities are great though I have no interest in the "new" halo trilogy and most exclusives of MS.

4/WIIU-Great exclusives but lacks in pretty much everything else

5/ Vita-shame this sold so poor because the exclusives plus access to tons of psp/ps1 games makes this a good system

PC by miles then ps4 then xboxone.

Woo... at the three exclusives x1 has this year

X1 ranks among the worst console I have ever owned. I guess I will turn it on for gears 4 beta.

Wiiu is also #1 because you can fake coop play and watch porn on the gamepad. No other console offers such a feature.
