Rare Might Be Reviving Battletoads for Xbox One

So if you’re one of those folks who have been crying out for a revival of Battletoads, this will probably come as great news to you- since it appears that Microsoft has filed a trademark for the Battletoads name in the United States.

This could have multiple implications- one of course is that Microsoft will be looking at re-releasing the original game on Xbox Live digitally. However, the much more likely scenario is that Microsoft is looking into reviving the brand, same as they did with Killer Instinct. For those who have wanted Microsoft to expand their portfolio, and/or to tap into Rare’s catalog more and more, this will come of as great news.

A Battletoads revival could be interesting. It's not my favorite Rare game, but I like the implications of this more, which is that Microsoft is finally willing to use Rare's back catalog to diversify their own first party lineup.

Let's see what comes of this.

It amazes me how such terrible beat 'em ups like this and Double Dragon get revivals due to nostalgia.

I hope they don't farm it out and do it in house.

I had fun with the game as a beat-em up way back when, but I'm not sure there is much to it today.

keep in mind that Killer Instinct and Phantom Dust also got trademarked befor etehir reveal, so this is looking very legit.

Still, the Rare game is most likely not BT. The filling was done a few days ago, i believe, and Spencer already playing it means it's probably another game.

I also need to play Battletoads.

I've been wanting this game for years, but it's taken so long I don't have much hope for it being anything other than a half-decent 2d XBL brawler.

That studio probably shouldn't be called Rare anymore with the amount of talent that's left. I hope MS hires some help. They have the money.

As for Bing, I like it simply because unlike Google, at least it's not trying to police what content I see or consume on the Internet. That's no one's business but my own, and Bing respects that, so I respect it for it.

I'd rather if 'Current Rare' keeps their hands away from anything that 'Old Rare' made.

They may be the same in name but nobody, absolutely no person that worked on the awesome stuff that Rare used to make is still in that company anymore.

Man Double Dragon was the shit (at least the 1st two arcade games were). I must've pumped at least $200 of my parents money into DD1 back in '87. Played Battletoads once on NES, can't remember if I had fun or not. If Rare still had talent like in their Nintendo days I'd buy every MS console with no 2nd thoughts.

I must be 100% honest. As Gears/Halo/Forza have proven Microsoft has a thing for cookie cutter, by the books, by the numbers - americanized games ( like Gears/Halo/Forza) You get the feeling Microsoft will basterdize this IP. Microsoft is not creative nor good at out put nor knows what makes a game good. So with Microsoft's history of always only doing the bare-minimum, always going for one kind of style of cookie cutter generic "game," and trying to control developers, all signs point to this not being a good game at the end of the day. Microsoft wont do this IP justise. I would only TRUST this IP in the hands of Sony or Nintendo, especially Sony as Sony is the ONLY gaming company whos taken risks on IPs and tried to release new different kinds of games, and innoavtive games (Journey, Swan, Pupputeer, Heavy Rain, green lighting Last of Us etc)

I loved Battletoads on NES. Too bad this will be X1 exclusive. I'd have bought it on PS4 in a heartbeat.

Instantly excited because it's Battletoads.

Instantly meh because it's Rare.

Then again, the Battletoads formula shouldn't be tough to handle, so hopefully they get it right. Though I must admit, I wish it were being handled by a studio like Retro. Not because it would be under the Nintendo banner, just so it would have better chances of being great.

Terrible as in they have stiff as shit gameplay that only someone that has never touched a beat 'em up since the third gen could enjoy. Maybe you should try playing some beat 'em ups and see for yourself before claiming that I have an out of the ordinary and baseless opinion.

While I thought the original game was good for its time, I hardly care about them reviving it. But it's good to know there's a pulse at Rare.

Well that would get me one step closer to an xone... Battletoads was as badass as it gets back in the day. Play to its natural coop nature, keep the vehicle sections and create a battle system that allows for Super tight hack n slash with buddy combos. Dunno, just spitballin'

Battletoads was amazing, BTvDD was also amazing. I don't think I ever finished a Battletoads game, had immense fun playing two player though. I hope Rare hit this out of the park.
