True, but even then, I'd imagine something like strafing to become a massive problem in your standard run 'n gun shooter. For example, say there's an enemy in front of me. I strafe to the left while still looking at my enemy. I then look where I'm heading and suddenly I'm looking at a wall instead of my screen. Since Natal would think I'm strafing to the left when instead, I'm running forward since I turned to my left, getting things to correct themselves would require very unnatural movements.

Well, I imagine movemtn would just be done by moving one foot one step over. Think of it like accelerating in that burnout demo they did at E3.
Try not to think about as moving your whole body, try to think about a giant d-pad under your feet.
That would definitely work, though it's still too unnatural compared to using your hands for aiming/shooting and in this particular case, I'd have to wonder why I don't just get a DDR dance pad and a Wiimote.
It's a good thing Rare is more open-minded than 99% of the people here. There are lots of possibilities to explore. I'm not intimidated by the challenge of learning to play games in a different way.cutmaclass1
I think what concerns most people is that Natal won't actual improve upon the games as much as force them to adapt a more awkward control scheme in order to implement it.
What I'm personally looking for in games is to make interfacing with them as seamless as possible. That's why I don't like the wii mote either. Why should I waggle to activate mechanics in games that usually just require me to press a button?
I hope they make a game for it where your like zeus and you can lunge your hand forward and throw lightning bolts at people in achient room lol, this is the only way i see something like a shooter working XD

Because the point of these motion systems is immersion. Pressing a button pulls most people out of the experience and reminds them their playing a game. I mean, technically, it's much much much more efficient to play DDR with a d-pad. Seriously, you would score much higher with little to no effort. And even though DDR feels nothing like dancing, it immerses you in by making you move.
A good natal control scheme for a shooter (how ever it would work) should make you feel like you are in the war zone ducking behind cover, not be the most efficiant system for competative twich reaction shooting.

I would imagine because there are zero games in existence that use the two together. :P

In which case I'd then imagine myself storming down MS Game Studios with the two in hand, play some game I hastily developed in front of everyone, and say it's better because there's an actual physical medium to immerse me with the sense of touch, something that Natal lacks. :P
Why don't we just wait to see what they have done, you are all putting them done without a lick of information on how it will work. Imagination and creativity has died in the eyes of most of you. The problem with the gaming industry is that people don't like change. That is why we see hundreds of sequels and few new IPs, just wait and try it out before judging it so severly.
Well, since no one else here will actually try and use their imagination, I guess I will.
Let's assume that natal is everything MS says it is.
I assume you would shoot by pointing at the screen and making a hammer motion with your thumb. Turning could be done by grabbing the screen by bending your pointer finger. You could switch weapons by putting your arm down and then bringing it back up. Pointing up could reload. Grenades could be thrown with your off arm. Croutching could be done by just croutching. Movement could be done by putting one leg forward, backwards or to the side. Tapping your foot could act like a run button.
There, now ya just got to test it...

That dude couldn't even look at the bottom of an avatars foot without it looking all distorted. You really think this thing is going to pick up on your individual digits for moves involving dexterity? I don't think so.

You're talking about an unfinished product. Of course it will have bugs. You act as though it's launching tomorrow. There is no way to move the character using Natal, so it all shooters using Natal would have to be on rails.
[QUOTE="IronBass"]MS owns RARE. What did you expect them to say?ShuichiChamp24
Same thing I was thinking. I still can't imagine how they would make a shooter work. Will it be on rails or something?
That doesn't say much...Rare has spent a lot of time with it, none of us haven't. I think there is a way, and Rare might be on to something.I'm welcoming Natal with open arms. Hopefully things will turn out well.
This. Welcome to the end of the thread. I don't understand why people here in SW can't be more open minded. Put a fresh coat of paint, on Killzone 2, and release it as KZ3, and every one's happy. This is not true. Why not wait and see? No need to be some negative now, and have to pry your foot out of your mouth with a crowbar later on.There is no way to move the character using Natal, so it all shooters using Natal would have to be on rails.
dream431ca
how I see it:
Movement must be done by a controller though. Analouge is best.
What we need is both NATAL and the sony controller. MS has body tracking but no controller. sony has a controller but the body tracking isnt as good as NATAL, but its there.
Or you buy this :P

Its vitually turns you tV into a window looking through at different angles. 3D is also brilliant. But this motion stuff is where gaming is going. Plus VR headsets are taking leaps nd bounds. Being the equivilant of a 72" screen and some getting into HD =O[QUOTE="Filthybastrd"]

I don't mean this in a rude way but unless Natal comes with a cybernetic implant that jacks your brain directly into the game, there's no control scheme that will improve your immersion in a shooter.
First of all you won't be emulating the real movements because it just won't be a feasible way to control a game like that. Second of all there won't be any physical contact which will in fact break the illusion that you're in the ****.
If anything you'll feel less immersed because you'll have a less seamless way of interfacing with the game which means you must dedicate more attention to controlling it.
FPS + Natal = Instant fail lems :lol:Wii_Gamer_277I love how people with absolutely NO programming, or engineering knowledge sits on a forum and tells everyone how an idea is going to fail. Rare has spent a lot more time than you with Natal. Rare's opinion > You.

Ya see, this is the kinda crap I'm talking about. I put forth a good idea, but nope, all ideas must be impossible because they're different than a normal controller...
Your idea sounds good on paper, but how about you make an actual "realistic idea"I'll wait and see if they can pull it off before passing judgement. However, if anyone under MS's umbrella can make NATAL work, I'm confident its RARE.

While I disagree with you, there's only one way to find out...and then it's still up to opinion.
Either way, the mind set of 'it's inferior because I say it is even though it hasn't been tried' is the wrong mind set to step into anythng new.

It's sad that so many people automatically dismiss natal with a flick of the (Sony) wand. The underlying message of the interview is how current gaming genres will have to be approached in a completely different way, yet people here are still critisising the device by trying to map out conventional controls on an FPS onto it.
Hmm.. Honestly if I had to play a shooter on a console with funky controls, I'd rather go play Prime on Wii. That's probably the closest thing to FUN + near PC experience to me.
Why? Could natal not use any object in your hand? A pencil, or fake gun? ... Just imagine ManHunt 3 for Natal. lol.The only way I see shooters working NATAL is if you point your finger and you use your fingers as a crosshairs although I don't know if NATAL is precise enough to do that.
