In 1998 a benchmark of survival was born, yes that's right, Resident Evil. The series went on to become one of the highest rated, best selling, and a extremely popular franchise. But in 2004/2005 something happened. Not seeing an RE game for 4 years after CVX we eventually got our hands on RE 4. Long time fans noticed the series had changed, An over the shoulder thrid person view replaced our fixed world camera, our controls became more fluid and tight and we wern't fighting zombies but parasite infested villagers. Now with the Resident evil 5 2 months away we get a few new features. Online co-op and a partner throughout the single player campaign. Now My question is to all the old time RE fans how do you feel about the evolution of the series? Good, Bad Indifferent?

IMO it's more fun than the old ones.

The reason all the hardcore fans love the old ones is because of nostalgia.

I wouldn't call it evolution, I'd call it dumbing down for casuals.. Previous RE games had far more depth in them than the newer ones can ever hope to have. Either that or they just switched the genre to third person shooter.

I don't like it. I thought RE4 was a decent game but it's not Resident Evil in my opinion, Resident Evil 1 and 2 are way better in every way, including controls.

It is a very mixed bag for me, I prefered the setting of the first games by far. But the character development was good in newer games.

I just feel that theyre going away from what made the first games so good to me. The good old facioned zombies (and the survival aspect)

I don't like it at all personally. RE4 was great as an action game but it's not what I expect from a Resident Evil game. It lacked the atmosphere and "horror" factor of the original games. Everything from the new controls and the camera seem to bring something new and and evolutionary to the series while taking away the core RE feeling for me. RE5 will be an improved RE4 and take the game into an even more action oriented direction which is fine because it's Capcom's game but not what I'm looking when I play. I'll still play it for what it is though.

I agree. I would admit that some parts of RE1scare me (do to the surprise more than any other thing). It was just tension, not truly horror. RE4 may be less tense, but it better designed. Like Dead Space.

Oh please, it's like saying true Batman fans wouldn't have mind the changes in Joel Schumacher's two Batman films cause it needed a new make up.

Change is only good when they do it right and that's not the case with RE4

I was happy for the change, RE was never really scary and after SH and SH2 came out it was in need of a revamp. I would however like a game with Resident evil 4 type controls in a Resi 2 or 3 setting.

Saying RE needed an evolution is like saying the Survival Horror genre as a whole needed an evolution when it most certainly did not. RE was once the very definition of survival horror games now it's just another third person shooter to add to the huge pile of them. Survival Horror is pretty much a dead genre right now and you can blame casuals for that.

I agree that RE wasn't scary, but it had creepy atmosphere, a mansion with seemingly infinite amount of doors, you actually felt like you were in peril. This outdoors wood hunting crap doesn't cut it. Resident Evil had puzzles (even if some were easy, there were times you'd get stuck and have to think about what you had to do), newer creatures were actually pretty scary/made you nervous and weren't just there for the hell of it. They're bringing back the dogs in RE5 but there's no point when Chris is probably going to have an MP5, Rocket Launcher, and air support which is completely stupid in a RE game. RE5 is more like Gears then it is Resident Evil, and I want Resident Evil, not Gears.

Really? Who say my standards are low? You? Please. Just for the record, RE4 is the 10th best game ever on Gamerankings. By the overall population, it is a great game. Why should I believe my standards are low? Because of you? Don't give yourself hat much importance ;)

And who are those "true gamers" you talk about? I've always thought that a "true gamer" would simply enjoy his games, and let the other people enjoy theirs, and would respect the fact that everyone has different tastes.

I find funny that you call yourself a "true gamer", yet you can't understand something as simple as that ;)

And I've been gaming for more than 15 years, why should I leave? Because you say so? Sorry, your opinion is not that important for me ;)

Older Resident Evil games had much more personality, scares, and environments. The older games had so many tense moments. I think RE4 was good, but it kind of feels like a gimped shooter with good boss battles.

That is true. Around here change ruins games but not changing is just rehashing. Changing will casualize but not changing decreases innovation. On topic, I like how the original ones present you with being trapped in one spot (old mansion, Police Station) and you progress throughout by gaining access to all the other places, however the gameplay of RE4 is less clunky then the old L2 to aim and up means go no matter what direction you are facing.

I'm not a fan of the new REs. 4 had its merits, but I still don't think it was nearly as creepy as the old ones. 5 looks like crap to me.....sure the graphics are good...but the main guy looks like a meat head, its ridiculous..

I don't mind the changes to the control scheme, but RE is just an action series now. They should never have given you the option to buy ammo as well as weapon mods, it ruined any suspense the game had left. The storyline has gone downhill as well imo. Still, at least it's a decent action game.

I'm still mixed about the evolution of the series. I will admit that before RE4 came the series' future was pretty cloudy. RE4 did a great job revitalizing the series but it did so by removing elements that made the series special. Removing those elements weren't necessary. With RE4 the series just abandoned the survival-horror genre and went to the action genre. The fact that ammo wasn't scarce and the atmosphere was significantly weaker killed the survival-horror feel for me. Even though the RE series was never a scarefest, it had tension. Playing RE2 and 3 the tension rose higher the more you progressed. With RE4 it just fell flat. The action is of course much much better. But it was better because it's basically not a survival-horror game anymore.

The gameplay in the newer ones really is not easier. It is just redesigned to make it a better shooter game.

I hope RE doesnt devolve into a generic shooter and completely lose the atmosphere of the older games. I think RE5 will be the deciding factor as far as thats concerned.......

I found the new gameplay mechanics in RE 4 to be a great change since by the time the series hit Code Veronica I felt the formula was getting stale. However as many of us, I don't like the fact that most of the thrill in the series is gone, I don't see why they had to take out so much of it in order to give it the somewhat faster gameplay mechanics.

Even though I wouldn't say it's all like gears (RE still has way more variety than the straight forward shooter) I also don't like how they took out most of the puzzle solving from the series.

I don't think giving it fast mechanics is exactly what made it less thrilling but making the enemies less creepy as well as the setting, making your character look like a buffed up commando instead of someone who's trying to survive as well as a less than stellar plot is the problem.

RE4 was a masterwork of a game, but its not Resident Evil. RE5 pushes that even further proving that Capcom seems to be done with survival horror in the RE world.

The main control difference between RE4 and the original RE games is that when you pull up the gun to shoot you now have the free ability to aim. They also moved the camera to the over the shoulder perspective. Beyond this, the control is identical, which is why I also find it laughable when people complain about the original titles and their movement.

Simple put though, no zombies, no claustrophobic rooms, and the heavy emphasis on action have taken the series away from its roots and made itself into a completely new game.

IMO it's more fun than the old ones.

The reason all the hardcore fans love the old ones is because of nostalgia.

Aljosa23

I played REmake after RE4 and I enjoyed it much more.

At this point, the games are hardly even comparable. They're very different, from the plot to the gameplay. The story is no longer relevant, the gameplay revolves around button-mashing action sequences and quickdraw firefights. RE has also become ridiculously easy (even on professional). You can knife your way through crowds of enemies with ease. Atmospherically RE4 is a far cry from the first few games. The castle was one of the most dull environments ever, and the Island was a strange mix of sty1es. I do like the improved camera angle though, it didn't detract from the experience at all.

As of now there's little to no survival elements, and hardly any horror elements. RE5 seems to be ignoring these with a coop system and very dull enemies (like RE4's). Of course we won't be able to tell until release though. The series is no longer a survival-horror by any means. It's just a simple action game now, and some people are beginning to call it a third person shooter. :?

I personally like both types of gameplay equally, REmake was amazing and so was RE4. I would love to see another old fashioned RE game, maybe a remake of RE2 with HD pre-rendered backgrounds... That would look stunning.

I'll admit, I haven't played any RE game any earlier than RE4. However, I didn't find RE4 to be anything like I was expecting it to be. It played great and it's fun to play, but it didn't scare me but a few times (usually buy not paying attention to something). What I think the series needs to do is take the best of both games, but mix them together.

It's pretending to have changed, but it's a bland and clueless substrate which was too afraid to trully transcend in reaction and stuck in between so-called change and conformism. Not ambitious enough to become a masterpiece, not mediocre enough to deserve a premature burial (but if RE5 will turn out to be more of the same, it will deserve it), somewhat interesting but not exciting, tense (albeit in an awkward way, and not scary, nor eerie at all) but not visceral.

Any claustrophobia was because of the terrible camera angles which let zombies walk right up on you, and you fought the camera to get it in front of you. That isn't scary, its frustrating.

Exactly, my friend, that's what I referred to as "tense (albeit in an awkward way)" in my post above. It's an artificial means of creating tension.
