Poll RE8 third or first person? (64 votes)

First person 28%
Third person 72%

The rumor mill is afloat that the next Resident Evil will return to a 4 style format.

But given how passionate some of you are in regards to 7, I must ask, I simply, must. Is this really what you want from a sequel? A return to the norm?

Worth bringing up - Resident Evil 3 is pretty much a given at this point.

Resident Evil 8 Rumored To Be In Development

Resident Evil 8 is rumored to be in development over at Capcom. The long-awaited remake of Resident Evil 2 has proven to be a huge success of Capcom, both in terms of sales and reviews. The game is firmly rooted in the franchise’s survival horror roots, just like previous title Resident Evil VII: Biohazard. The series had taken a long detour into action and co-op in the years prior to part seven, but it seems survival horror is definitely making a comeback.

The original Resident Evil 2 famously shifted direction during development, with one version of the game - dubbed Resident Evil 1.5 - being scrapped completely. This would become a recurring theme during development on the mainline series, with Resident Evil 4 going through four separate ideas before arriving at the final product. The original concept was such a departure it eventually evolved in Devil May Cry instead, but another was labeled the Hook Man version. This take saw Leon become infected by a virus that triggered hallucinations and caused nightmarish figures like living dolls and a killer armed with a hook to chase after him.

Related: Capcom Should Release Resident Evil 1.5 As Resident Evil 2 DLC

This version of Resident Evil 4 was scrapped due to technical limitations of the GameCube. In light of the success of Resident Evil 2 and the resurgence of the series, a Twitter account called Evil VR (via Twisted Voxel) reports Capcom is already at work on Resident Evil 8. The account also claims the game will borrow a number of concepts from the Hook Man version, including hallucinations and the titular creature himself.

Evil VR also states Capcom won’t launch the game before the rumored remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.

Since this information is coming from an unverified source it should be treated with a hefty dose of salt, but the account has been close to the mark on other rumors, such as the release date of the one-shot Resident Evil 2 demo. The Hook Man version of Resident Evil 4 wasn’t possible at the time, because the concept required that Leon could slip into a hallucination at any moment, requiring two possible versions of every environment. This would have been hard on the GameCube, and while it was briefly considered having the Hook Man as the only enemy in order to save it, it was eventually thrown out. The idea has a lot of potential, however, so it would be nice to see it return.

While Capcom stated a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesiswould be dependent on the success of the second game’s remake, reports suggest it's already well into development. It sounds like Resident Evil 8 will continue the storyline set up in Biohazard, but fused with the gameplay style of Resident Evil 2. For now, it sounds like Nemesis will definitely be the next installment in the series.

I loved RE:7 but I feel like it should of been called something else. It shouldn't of been a part of the main series since its not really connected to the others.
I'm happy either way. If they do another 1st person I hope its like 7, if its 3rd it should be part of the main story line or the could just do both and let people decide if they want 1st or 3rd. It can't be that much harder to have the option to swap.

I think I like the 3rd person more, honestly; which is weird, since I'm usually an FPS player. But perhaps it's because RE2 was just that much better than RE7; not to say RE7 was bad, it was just merely good, not great.

my friend, i respect those who liked RE2 and i dont even think its bad game. but RE7 is better game by far.

it has better story? check. RE2 story is terible

its more atmospheric? check

Better characters? check. Baker is best RE villain ever. while Mr X is too bland.

Better location? check. old house and new house are much and much better location than police station and lab.

RE7 is more scary. RE2 is action zombie game. never once i got scared or feel like im playing a horror game. zombies are not scary.

Look at this creepy scene. now compare it to anything RE2.

RE2 is pale in comparision. i dont care about what happening to leone. he looks like some kind of fashion model that resemble Leonardo DiCaprio.

Yes, I played through that scene. It didn't do anything for me. The southern exploitation feels lazy. Classic cinema was better than the stuff movies and games try to shock you with now. The scenes in Night of the Living Dead (1968) are better than this smut. The regeneration (cutting his arm off) is also stupid. His arm shouldn't have been that easy to cut off with a freaking knife. Are they made out of play-doh? Jesus.

To be fair, the dad was a giant monster in disguise. He would have easily had the power to cut someone's arm off with a single blow. But, yeah, the game wasn't really that creepy, although some parts were decent.

Thinking back on it, though, the game was rife with cliche Hollywood horror movie tropes. Why didn't they just kill him right away? It's like any scene out of a movie where instead of the villain killing the good guy or a victim, they sit there and talk about their plans for world domination as if it matters. It works in the context of some villains, but it's mostly a shitty plot device used way too often in horror movies.

On the subject of tropes and Resident Evil, one trope I'm sick of is the gigantic evil base. The end of RE2 is a perfect example. There is no reason Umbrella should have these gigantic underground chasms, like something out of Tolkien. It serves no architectural purpose. I know the labyrinthine level design isn't realistic either, but that at least makes for a good game and it doesn't feel nearly as stupid.

Agreed. I have enjoyed RE, RE2, RE4 but it got old and wasn't scary. RE7 had some nice tension and creepiness. Explore first person further and do great Remakes of 3 and CV in 3rd person.

Love it, and if it doesn't have a countdown at the end it ain't a Resi game.

Well, I'm actually glad they went with 3rd person. I think Resident Evil: Survivor was their very first 1st person Resident Evil game (It was a PS1 game) annnnnnd.......yeah. Wasn't particularly great...

Yah, I played it too. Survivor was a mess of crap. A poorly made story. Shitty controls. Bad English Dub. It was just an all around disgrace.

I didn't buy RE7 because it had nothing to do with anyone in the previous games aside from what... the last 2 minutes? I also hated the first person view. If RE8 is set to continue what RE7 did, I won't be buying it either.

No Ghost... RE7 was a shit RE game. A good horror game... sure. But a shit RE game.

Something like resident evil revelation like game. Instead of one person there is two people and the player can switch.

REVII ruined traditional RE for me. It was so good in PSVR, I didn't want to go back to the old REs, which is primarily why I lost interest in RE2 Remake. Even with all the enhancements, it felt archaic compared to REVII.

They should either do it like the original REmake/old style RE games or go full 1st person.

No over the shoulder/3rd person bs.

Why not both. I prefer third person but some people don't. I prefer flexible movement and speed and some people are ok with not having that. I like to see my character and some people are ok playing as a pair of hands and a gun

110% agreed.

over the shoulder third person remove tension, and kill the immersion.

First person is always immersive.

thats why im so looking forward to Dying light 2 because chris avelon working on it and looks like more of first person immersive sim survival horror.

@undefined: I'm certainly in the minority here, but I actually prefer the camera angles from the very first Resident Evil. I don't mind the tank controls, they just provide extra tension.

Resident evil is more than just a camera "perspective" to me , so 1st or 3rd person is fine, and to be honest, perspective is not even part of the equation to me when playing games, but the next game needs to keep the good back tracking in huge claustrobhobic indoor areas and double down on puzzles, they need to be at least a little bit harder than 7s and 2re, but not hard enough to break the pace.

Also, bring back bulletsponge zombies, but make them turn into a new variation of the molded if not disposed off properly like in RE1 remake with the crimson heads, but most importantly, i want 2 characters to choose from like re1 and 2. that helps replay value a lot.

I don't care either way, but as long as it follows the same formula that 2 (remake) and 7 have with the creepy atmosphere, UI being similar and pretty minimal compared to most games, and visceral violence then I will be a day one buyer.

How about a 2nd person perspective? You move the character relative to the view of those you're trying to avoid and/or kill. It's like a cinematic camera angle that chases the character whom you're trying to move.
