i prefer art direction. god of war 3 had a good art direction with good realism. i think crysis, gears of war 3, and killzone 3 are just straight out ugly~!!!!!!!!!!
Depends on the game. I wouldn't ever want Mario to look anything like real life, but Flight Simulator and ArmA should not look like anything but.
Every game has art direction.... I think you should choose games like Mirrors Edge, TF2, Okami, etc. to compare to crysis and whatnot. but even then it would come down to preference and the mood of the game.
e.g. playing KZ2 with cartoon visuals may not help set atmosphere, and likewise playing donkey kong with crysis graphics goes against the nature of the game.
Stalker and Crysis both have art direction. Stalker particularly with its grim and desolate world that creates a feeling of isolation that is unmatched. Crysis also has an art direction which is most noticeable in the alien ship and the frozen wasteland portions of the game. You're basically asking which art direction is better, a question which cannot be answered.
Realism IS an art direction. It's just its own styIe among the pallette of art dirctions out there, such as cartoony, painted, cel shaded, illustrative, bright & colourful, gray & gritty, dark & terrifying, gleaming & futuristic, authentic historical, fictitious historical, urban.... etc....
I guess what you're really asking is people's preference between realistic or styIistic.
Realism. I don't like Art direction at all. It's icky. jg4xchampUhhhh this V
Ugh. Realism is an art direction. AAllxxjjnnAnd this topic still doesn't make sense....
what doesn't make sense. jg4xchampThe topic doesn't make sense because the title is Realism versus art direction while the OP is God of war 3 versus Crysis and Uncharted 2 versus s.t.a.l.k.e.r.......it doesn't make a lick of sense
Realism is clearly superior to art direction. Clearly. jg4xchampAll games have art direction (except text based I guess) and realism in games is achieved through art direction.
Ok what do you guys think. God of war 3 or crysis? Uncharted 2 or s.t.a.l.k.e.r3DSOG
Codename Kingdoms exclusive from Crytek on xbox 360 will have Crysis3 graphics with some stunning epic medieval art and monsters
That one, best graphics ever + best art ever = the best for me
While there are few games that actually look realistic, I tend to prefer styIes that lie on that end of the spectrum.

[QUOTE="dakan45"]Uncharted. Alll this realism with zero art direction killed crysis for me. I could care less for spectacular graphics if what they show us with their engine is generic and unimpressive. Espada12
Realism is an art direction............
Basically everything that is not real life is an art direction:!:

As is everything that is real life. The first two.
I like games to look believable but that doesn't mean they have to look realistic, which usually just translates to dull in most examples.
Great art direction over pure realism will usually win out imo.
