The millions of ppl playing rpgs and games like metal gear solid, and I bet ive read more books than you ever will.
I'd be willing to take that bet, given that you've consistently confused heavy amounts of dialogue and exposition with story. The Zelda games have a strong narrative thread, at least as strong as what you'll find in Metal Gear or Final Fantasy: what they lack are long stretches of dialogue, and a surfeit of cut scenes.
Unless you also contend that there's no narrative to ICO, or Shadow of the Colossus.
Â
Hmmm interesting. I actually have to agree with this post.
Zelda for instance imo presents in the least, sharp writting, in comparison to a lot of games out there, that have heavy ammounts of text in them. It also has some memorable characters and an interesting universe with interesting and colorfull races. The Metroid Prime series also fall in to this imo.
Also, in some cases sharp writing is not always necessary, since SOTC for example didn't have much of it as well as ICO and I can tell you right here right now, that I prefer both of those games story's to hundreads of rpg's out there.

Go get a PS2 right now with that game. Seriously you won't regret it. You must also get ICO, but that will prove to be a chalenge at this point in time.

Because, I might possibly like them? I like Twilight Princess but just lost incentive to play more. I like Super Mario Sunshine for an hr but got bored. I gave up on Eternal Darkness I dont know why, i might give it a second chance one of these days. I forgot to add, I also have super paper mario, good game, i stopped playing when mpo came out, i might start again, and twin snakes: ended it like five time:D. I ended Luigis mansion, it was really short and when i was checking out the faq i saw i was nearly done and was like, im ending this one:PÂ

Goldoneye was based off a movie, it will have a story.
All the other games you mentioned other than twilight princess and ocarina had one cutscene in the beginning and then one cutscene at the end. Great story there. And im not a fan boy, i had the n64 and have the gc. I played all the games you listed above except conkers. Twilight Princess was a VERY good game but i stopped playing it because there was barely any story to drive it forward. Which is kind of messed up as it has the most story a nintendo game has ever had.
No Story? What are you talking about? A game doesn't have to have a thousand cutscenes to portray a good story. Metroid Prime has a deep story even though it lacks a lot of cutscenes. You must not be able to understand a plot line or story without it right there shouting in your face saying "Hey, this is exactly what's going on, instead of letting you /PLAY/ through the story, I'll throw in a bunch of cutscenes so you can understand what's going on better"
The stories are there, it's just Nintendo likes to make them a bit more subtle, and in some cases a little light as to make gameplay the number one priority.

whats so great about a story in games
its nothing unique to the gaming genre... stories are for books... and some films
i swear most games with stories i generally skip the cutscenes, unless its some scifi world and even then sometimes..
it's like somebody making a mediocre movie and then slapping a billion dollar orchestrated soundtrack to it... Oops , see Jerry Bruckheimer
why cant games rely soley on something unique to the gaming genre... gameplay
the marriage is more artistic than any game with an epic storyline and soundtrack...
don't get me wrong, some games can suck you in their world
some people want to be put directly into the action though , without being interrupted
are genres allowed to exist that lack the depth of a storyline? say goodbye to sim/puzzle games, rhythm games etc.. these are immersing you in other ways
i'd love to play chess but it's not deep enough without a storyline based on william shakespeares writing
as for the record, the wii is the first nintendo console i've owned, but it wasn't because of storylines that i decided to finally buy a nintendo console
other than for maybe FMVs, i've never bought a game FOR a story.. it's more of an incentive to finish the game
something like MGS i just wish i could extract the story and save myself the trouble of playing the game
Â
i will tell you however, after focusing on PC gaming for so long, it was actually refreshing to go back to the console and play some singleplayer games.. sometimes you need some scripted linear progression
but the funny thing is, it took borrowing my friends GC to get me back into consoles.. it started with MP(which was too overwhelming for me actually) and Eternal Darkness

I sure there are tons of people that can't understand or don't care abou complicated political, moral or psicological plots.
Everyone should have fun, even the not so smart ones.
Games are like any other media, only they are interactive. Some are more interactive than others, some rely more on special effects and some focus on using gamming as a media to tell you a story.
I'd whish people made more serious, yet still commercial games, about topics that really matter like global warnming, Iraq's War, Civil liberty and free speech in communism countries, Bio terrorism, Bio-ethics, etc... We need to have games as just another kind of media.
Â
And Yeah, if someone wants to make a game about kicking some bystander in the croch like some MTV show they can, and I'm sure it would sell billions, but we can't limit the industry to that.
Not entirely true... Zelda games actually have great storylines, they may revolve around the same similar cliche plot but some of the twists you'll find in WW for example are amazing. Also, the Paper Mario games make up for the lack of a storyline in Super Mario titles, and Fire Emblem is a game franchise that probably has one of the best storylines out there.

No, tetris is a puzzle game. Two COMPLETELY different genres.Â
I think we have a winner for worst topic today.
Take the top games by rival developers and tell me which games have "fantastic" NOT PREDICTABLE stories?
Exactly. Few if any.
You're telling everyone here that Metroid and Zelda do not have good stories.
Windwaker? Metroid Prime? Not to mention a series of other games that have appeared on Nintendo systems....
This topic is so ridiculous, the fanboyism in here is nuts.

Have you ever played a SPM game or a LOZ game? If you have then you know how stupid that was.
so what if we don't want Mario with a dramatic past full with sadness and depression.
what if we don't want Zelda being about the hard tough life of living in hyrule with struggles of keeping link's family alive
what if we don't want an awful twist like Samus having an affair with some dude named roger
what if we want simple?
(btw i'm using "we" as an example im in no position to say what do most want, but atleast i can say what "most" fan want)
They have no story at all, there is just nothign to drive the game forward. Its like oh cool, ill have fun for a bit but then it gets so boring. Like, having no story is fine if its multiplayer but not when its singleplayer. I mean honestly, how can you have fun playing mario?T_B_B
do you not have a soul:|?
