Wow awesome news. One of the best games I've played. Hopefully the sequel is underway according to the rumors. :D

Red Dead Redemption Sells 13 Million Copies

John Marston has now invaded some 13 million homes.

John Marston has now invaded some 13 million homes.

Publisher's net revenue dips 40 percent to $236.3 million during third quarter; open-world Western and hardwood sim reach new sales milestones.

Take-Two didn't have a happy holiday. Today, the publisher announced that net revenue for the three months ended December 31 came in at $236.3 million, down 40 percent from last year's holiday haul of $334.3 million. John Marston has now invaded some 13 million homes. Take-Two attributed the downturn to a lack of big-name games like Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare and Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete, which were selling well this time last year. Additionally, Take-Two said the NBA lockout negatively affected sales during the period.

Net income for the period stood at $29 million, down sharply from the $49.5 million posted during the same period a year prior.

According to Take-Two, the biggest contributors to the company's net revenue during the period were NBA 2K12 and L.A. Noire, as well as catalog sales of Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Midnight Club Los Angeles, and Borderlands.

Specifically, Take-Two said Red Dead Redemption life-to-date sales have climbed to 13 million units, NBA 2K12 sales have reached 4 million units, and L.A. Noire unit sales are closing in on 5 million units.

Take-Two said digitally delivered content made up 11 percent of total net revenue for the period, led by Grand Theft Auto III for iOS and Android devices. Sales of add-on content from the Grand Theft Auto, L.A. Noire, and Red Dead Redemption franchises also were big digital contributors for Take-Two's bottom line.

On a nine-month basis, Take-Two's revenues were also down. For the nine-month period ended December 31, the company reported net revenue of $677.7 million, down from $954.6 million from a year ago. Take-Two also posted a net loss of $8.4 million for the period, compared to a gain of $108.8 million for the year prior. Take-Two also updated its fourth-quarter and full fiscal year outlooks. The company said it now expects net income for the quarter ending March 31, 2012, to come in at $112 million to $162 million, down from $225 million to $275 million. And for the full fiscal year, Take-Two said it now expects to haul between $790 and $840 million, down from the $1 billion to $1.1 billion previously forecasted. This downturn was attributed to the delay of Max Payne 3.

Red Dead Redemption is a terrible game. Terrible story, terrible characters, terrible controls, terrible open world, terrible multiplayer, terrible mission design, terrible everything.

Who the hell plays this crap? Definitely not me.

Desmonic

lol You could be a little less obvious hehe :P Great game. Proud to be one of those 13 million owners!

Yeah, I haven't seen trolling this obvious since... well, ever. Its like me going to a Star Wars fansite and saying all of Star Wars sucks, couldn't get more obvious then that.

As for the thread, I'd say well done. Game deserves it, and I hope they can maybe do something with John's son in a future title.

Impressive , but part of me would like to take half its sales and apply them to other great games that got overlooked.

Boring game throughout.

No doubt the Rockstar hype train, and advertising muscle is what shot this game to 13 million. However, other games were more deserving of it based on quality

Same here. I dunno, 13 million sales 1 for one game is extreme.

Maybe you should avoid the sales figures for any Call of Duty or First Party Wii game if you think that.

I think the biggest issue was how excruciatingly slow it started.

I mean, I think that was an issue with GTA IV, but in RDR I heard so many tales of people wanting to kill themselves before they ever got to the good parts because of how slow it was. The ending was so amazing and it got great after Mexico, so it was crushing to hear that.

Rockstar definitely needs to start their game off with a bang. Maybe in the next one, it can start with Jack dangling from a train with a bullet in his gut after a heist gone wrong, and him hunting the stolen loot and guy who betrayed him (who happens to be a big bald mercenary leader) wherever he is at.

I mean... that hasn't been done before right?

In some ways I don't blame them, it did start slow and the herding jobs in the beginning did kind of suck. I think the turning point where I started think "Wow this game is pretty awesome" is when you first cross into Mexico and the awesome soundtrack pops in. What also did it for me was they made a likable protagonist and cast. With GTA4 I hated Niko and Roman, they just pissed me off.

I actually loved Niko and Roman, but I definitely think Red Dead did a better job with the story.

Instead of constantly complaining about being "in the life" and killing people, Marston was presented with that dilemma in a more believable way. He had bad experiences, as well as good ones, he regrets his mistakes, but all the killing he does in game is for his family, so misvoicing his concerns sounds much more plausible then Niko, who would complain about his conscience in killing one gang banger for a cop one minute, then kill 30 cops the next minute.

Still, they could really start off better. Think of Vice City and GTA III, both those games had a bit of a slow build up, but they started off with an awesome cutscene, and I think Rockstar should make that sort of set up playable next time, so we can see how amazing the game will be 30 hours in with a bunch of sweet guns and stuff we had before we got betrayed or lost all our money or whatever.

I think it's pretty insane given it was an unknown IP.

Was it because of the western theme+open world+rockstar name+big marketing push combination?

I wonder why they couldn't repeat the success with la noire?

+Good gameplay mechanics with cover + auto lock in( if you like that kind of thing), +open word with many things to do bounties, games, and items to collect. Also it's a theme that is not explored that often compared to others that being set in the West with some good amount of facts here and there. I'm sure fans of the Wild West can appreciate it. It does get boring and repetitive in some sections. -The horse riding conversations. -The same random perps that you chase down after an incident. I wish there was an option to go into "cockpit" view when riding your steed. I wouldnt mind if it had some more RPG elements like leveling up, upgrading or fixing your guns Able to form your own posse., become a Sherrif and have deputy come along with you or able to organize a group before hand when going one mission. The same if you decide to become a gang leader and have your own bandits at your call.

It was a lot better than the console versions of GTA IV, but I think I liked the PC version of GTA IV much better. RDR was dragged out too long in its mission structure. Going to Mexico was the point when I felt the end of the game should have come about. I was over it.

I did power through it, and threw it up on Ebay immediately after.

RDR was fun game. I'm apart of that 13 mil and it was worth every penny. It's a lil overrated IMO when people call it amazing or GOTY worthy. It's not quite that good, but it is great.

Such a boring game. I've had it for well over a year and I still haven't bothered to complete it.

GTAIV was boring as hell too but I finished it since it was the first game I bought this gen. I have the episodes and I haven't bothered to finish of TBoGT.

I'll be passing on GTAV because it will be more boredom.

Truly a masterpiece at creating the look & feel of a old time western and much to my surprise, my only complaint would be I couldn't get into playing through it again but the first time through, loved every minute of it.

I would mostly agree with you had I not played Red Dead or Brotherhood. He was great in Ass Creed II but I completely lost interest in him after Brotherhood.
