I was rather underwhelmed by the BF3 demo and trailers they showed.

In case people have already forgotten, a new Red Orchestra game, entitled "Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad" is launching in a few months. This game absolutely crushes BF3 in terms of gameplay mechanics. There is suppressive fire, fire while in cover, and so much more.

This game could seriously give BF3 a run for the money - and it requires less computer to run, too!

Yeah, but it's too realistic for most people. BF3 is more accessible and more hyped and will come out on the consoles too so this has no chance to beat it in sales.

No, Red Orchestra offered an excellent balance between arcade and simulation. ArmA is something that defines inaccessible, though.

I don't guess I've ever played the first one, I might check it out. It has a bit more of a Call of Duty vibe to me from the gameplay I just watched of the first game.

Well I think most CoD players would never grasp with RO's realism.

I'm waiting for RO2 far more than for BF3, but comparing those games is silly. RO2 is realistic tactical shooter, while BF3 is arcade. They have very different goals that are bassicaly not compatibile with eachother, so comparing them doesn't make any sense

Well the first game you had to play carefully as it was pretty much one bullet one kill. The weapons were a little more realistic than we are used to. For instance long reload periods. And overheating barrels that you had to replace. It is definitely not a run and gun type of game.
They will bring in some authentic touches. Interior of the tanks, the way the regiments run, etc.
It has potential. If you are a fan of WW2 material, I would keep an eye on this one.

Cool, I enjoy a more realistic shooter. I enjoy tactics more than just gallery shooters. Yeah I enjoy me some WWII games, Battlefield 1942 was one of my favorite shooters of all time.

What about dog fights and bombing runs?

Hmm yes. Problem with realistic shooters is they can have a very steep learning curve and cause a lot of frustration at first.
I don't know about dogfights and bombing runs.. I can't remember that being a part of the original game. I wouldn't expect aerial combat to be in RO2. I think there will be artillery and aerial recon that the commander can call in with the radio person... But looking at the first game, what they put in there will work very well and I doubt that you would really miss aerial combat in that game. I imagine it would be too wonky and maybe too fast to be part of its gameplay.

Yeah, but as long as it's not like you're calculating the exact speed and direction of the wind and other elements along with exact distance just to get a sniper shot off then it shouldn't be too overbearing.

That sounds like ARMA2, I don't think the Red Orchestra Devs have the time to put that kind of stuff in.

Yeah ARMA is a pretty interesting series. It would never be able to be a mainstream game like CoD, it takes too much actual thinking to play.

Luckily. I look at ARMA as the series that tries to put in realism and forsakens all else for that realism. RO in its time (which is a long time ago) was a little more modest. RO used only a few authentic touches that were all interesting to the gameplay, and didn't render the game neigh unplayable. ARMA goes a little too far for me, on all fronts. But that is personal.

You actually need to lead your shots when you're firing from far away in RO. I think ARMA is a bit of a special case here anyway, as the levels are so much huger than any other game.

Two of the best FPS to be released this year.

But Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingradhas a lot more interesting gameplay features than Battlefield 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkk3SiywLHI

False. While RO2 will be great, it will not be BF3. Also BF3 has suppressing fire if you didn't know that already.

I made this post before I read any of the BF3 previews. But it sounds like suppressive fire is available only for belt-fed machine guns in BF3.

The thing that RO2 indisputably has over BF3 is that it doesnt have any of the bullsh*t that BF3 has, no paid DLC, no retailer exclusive weapons, mod support...etc.

I am deffinetly looking forward to it more then BF3.

I hope you didn't watch trailers that just show cuts of the game footage with RO1. Those tend to include mostly the action bits (which is pretty harrowing when your'e actually playing) but half the intensity comes from moving up with your squad in a bombed out environment, spotting an enemy across the way-- but not firing, doubting if you can pull off the shot and wondering if it'll alert his buddies if you do. Never know if there's a sniper or machine gunner out there, just waiting.

I was hoping it would come out during the summer game drought, but if it comes out the same time as BF3, I will prob wait for a steam sale.

It has no official release date, but its soon, the games already in closed Beta and one of the European publishers apparently has it listed for an august release.

I'd give BF3 about 45% realism and Red Orchestra 2 about 65-70% realism, from the looks of it. Arma 2 borders on like 85 - 90% realism.

It's all about the level of dosage you prefer. I personally like how both BF3 and RO2 are shaping up, I don't think either will disappoint for their respective audiences.

Edit: Please don't miscontrew my post either, the higher the percentage doesn't necessararily make it a better game, and vice verse'.

RO2 is realistic tactical shooter, while BF3 is arcade.

I can't imagine the lengths to which you'd have to stretch the definition of that word to make it fit a battlefield game.

whoa whoa whoa..easy man. I love Red Orchestra and I'm very hyped for Heroes of Stalingard, but don't bring up games that 95% of the posters here will assume is a music game:P

personally i think both games will be amazing and worth checking out. Also Red Orchestra requires a completely different mindset when it comes to first person shooters. You can be a pro in games like call of duty and battlefield and be completely godsmacked when playing RO
