I don't know how rentals really work, never really used them.

GeneralShowzer

Then how could you make any reasonable conclusion about how it's killing off developers?

Perhaps you can point out where rentals were mentioned in that?

Well I read it the first time, and uh. Nothing about Redbox, rentals, or anything of the sort.

Did it ever strike you that he might be talking about the masses of consumers who only purchase games with multiplayer components? Nothing there suggests rentals.

[QUOTE="GeneralShowzer"]OK, so in this thread even though developers and publishers say how used games and rentals are bad for them, still people here are convincing themselves that somehow they are helping the industry and bringing massive profit to it. You can do what you like guys, but you're arguments are going against the ones of the developers. It's hurting the industry, bad, end of story.GeneralShowzer

what devs have actually come out and said that? and i never said that it's "helping" the industry, i just don't think it's "hurting" the industry as much as these big name publishers or the internetz would like you to believe.

So you're saying you know more than them about how much it's hurting them? That's how I understand it.

what are you talking about? show me some devs who claim rentals are hurting the industry...

Really? weren't you one of the people complaining about how much Crytek lied to you about Crysis 2? Developers and publishers aren't above twisting the truth for their own reasons, you know. Rentals have been around forever, how come it's such a big issue now? While I'm sure there is some truth in what they say, there is also a large amount of some beancounter saying:

"look at all that money we could be getting, why aren't we getting it?"

It isn't so much a loss as it is somebody noticing they could be making even more money.I can't think of one company out there that closed their doors because of the rental market, can you?

Well I definitely missed that. Um... my mistake. Sorry man. But why Cliffy is worked up about this is beyond me. Blockbuster and Family Video have been doing this kind of thing for ages, and in their prime they were just as big as Redbox.

Maybe not traditional renting, but 2$ for a game ? Average lenght of SP games is 10-12 hours these days.. Even Infamous 2 which is twice that long, you can rush it. So you're telling me that it doesn't hurt them in any way? The fact that people can complete the game for 2$ on release date?

Might have something to do with soaring game development cost they weren't anywhere near as high 10-15 years ago.

Redbox and other rental services aren't hurting the industry. I mean, do people think that they developers are just handingout free copies of games to Redbox and Blockbuster for free...just so THEY can make money of their game? No, they're bought by those rental services...then rented out. The developers already made their money from the initial purchase...and that's not even counting what royalties and other kick-backs they receive.

I mean, I just bought a used SUV...should I have to pay Ford yet again for a car they made years ago? No, they got their money already.

I just can't see how this can hurt publishers. Unless Redbox is getting their games off the black market, they still have to go to the publisher for the games, so why can't the publisher say no? If they know they're game is going to be destroyed if it goes rental, then why sell it to Redbox? I don't see why the would, and I imagine some might not.

It's $2 a day, not per rental, and I have a feeling that the TC may not have actually beat InFamous 2 in one day (I remembered something), I would like to see a Trophy Card on that one. :P

Seems a bit far fetched, and while I know it may be possible (;)), I also know not a lot of gamers would be able to accomplish such a feat. :P

I remember something intriguing,Here's a linkI found quite fascinating...I have other ones, but you get the idea.:P

"Does God of War 3 have any MP at all? If it doesn't, I'm just going to rent it. Save me $55."

I see a theme here. :P

Hmmm...According to this official Sony link, InFamous 2 isn't even been played by the TC. It's looking like this whole idea of "Beating InFamous 2" in a day for $2.17 isn't seeming so accurate. :P

-----

EDIT : I get it. ;)

I'm looking forward to beating GeoW 3, Forza, and Halo HD for $2.17 and loving it. :P

Actually, I don't rent games...I do my best to support the games I love on all the platforms, but I just had to make my post SW worthy. : P

hell, i'm talking just 5-6 years ago. wasn't a problem then. might have something to do with devs being able to control things through online gaming. just a hunch.

redbox is a good deal but it took me like 4 days to beat i2 on my first playthrough and i'm going through it on the evil side so i expect to have it at least another week so redbox is way more expensive for me than gamefly.

i pay about 80 cents a day for gamefly and get 2 games at a time which isaround one fifth what redbox charges.

There's no way I can beat most games out there in one day. I would say it's a good way to demo the games, but then again we have demos online for that.

I'm saying that they haven't proven it to my satisfaction. The way publishers have been nickle and diming consumers this gen just makes me think that they only have thier own best interests in mind here. Not to mention the fact that they have new revenue streams (DLC) that didn't exist years ago.

Ok, so you got DLC, DD (with no discount even though there is no physical media)now stop *****ing about rental sales and used games. The problem with this is they want their goddamn cake and they want to eat it too.

I got Gamefly, which is probably even more cost effective overall (I love it btw, it's really great if you want to play many older games, but also new ones when they are available)
