No remake has been better than GoW, Doom 2016, the Witcher 3, BOTW and RDR2.
Did we actually get that many remakes?
Black Mesa and Resident Evil 2 are the only notable ones I can think of right now.
Crash, Spyro, Homeworld, Modern Warfare 1&2, Final Fantasy, I guess there are a few more.
Nothing outrageous, but still noteworthy.
Were those remakes or remasters?
CoD MW 1 was a remake, for example, but from what I've read CoD MW 2 was a remaster.
What Homeworld remake did we get? We got a new game (Deserts of Kharak, which is awesome) but the games we got prior to that were remasters, not remakes.
Unless I'm using my own connotation of the word "remake" incorrectly for what the actual meaning is.

Sometimes the two blend into eachother, but when the graphics get completely remade, I'm certainly speaking of a remake.
Homeworld is a remake (but is also being called a remaster).
Modern Warfare's 2 graphics are also completely new.
Oh and there was the Warcraft 3 remaster... with all new animations, graphics and such :/
Confusing, I know.

MW1 was remastered so is MW2. they are exact same games with slightly visual tweak.
Remake is complete overhaul of gameplay.

Remake is complete overhaul of gameplay.
Audio and visuals have been completely redone.
Why would a remake need to completely overhaul the gameplay?
Do you consider Half Life such a flawed experience that Black Mesa had to completely rework it's gameplay? You are still doing the same shooting, in the same sections and the same puzzles in the same sections.
Since I am getting Trails of Mana this month a game I have wanted remade FOREVER, I have to agree with TC.
Have nothing against remakes as long as the genre interest me.
The thing is that sometimes the magic of these games wore off for some reasons, and you can't get the feelings you once experienced playing them.
It's not only a matter of game-play mechanics or better graphics. Seems to me that sometimes the whole era is different, gone missing.
Quite frustrating feeling that spoils some great gaming memories.

It's the same, yes, but different. You stumble across the same core areas but at the same time things are different.
It's not about reworking the gameplay, it's about applying one's vision and interpretation to it.
In other words, it's more than the game being passed through a new game engine. The levels were actually hand-crafted from scratch (albeit from an established blueprint) instead of simply photocopied while hitting the "enhance" button like remasters are generally handled.

Woops, you are right.
A lot of the games I listed: MW 1&2, Warcraft, Homeworld: are all remasters.
But a remaster can be really lazy (resolution bump) or it can be a complete rework.
For example MW, Warcraft, Homeworld, as well as Age of Empires DE: those are the basis of a good remaster to me.
Age of Empires II: HD edition: is a remaster, but it's actually just a bunch of QOL improvements and a resolution bump.
Age of Empires II: Definitive edition: is a remaster, but it's actually way more this time, with completely reworked graphics and sound.
So yeah, the remaster term is more lose. While the remake term is more strict.
Good luck with RE3, as I clocked 4 hours and backtracked heavily once I had the lockpick/bolt cutter. Yeah, I enjoyed it, but remakes are not the be-all-end-all.
I've played longer demos.
Been eyeing RE2 Remake, but that's like what..? 6 hours? No way I'm paying more than 10 bucks for that..

Black mesa is fan made remake. and even they done excellent job.
imagine if it was official valve remake on source 2. would be best thing ever.
Remake develop from start, remastered just update visuals. ie MW1 and 2.

God of War III remastered: nothing has changed = remaster
Modern Warfare remastered: completely new animations, cutscenes, graphics, audio = remaster
Remaster is a pretty stupid term if this is anything to go by.

Nothing changed in modern warfare lol.
you just easily impressed by call of duty.
@ghosts4ever: What kind of retort is that? You never bring any kind of facts or arguments. Just straight out go for personal attacks all the time.
"Hurr durr, you like Wolfenstein & COD"
Dude, please.
my friend, thats not personal attack, im just saying you are easily impressed by anything COD. noting attack it was on, nor i call any name there.
@mrbojangles25: Shadow of the Colossus, Crash, Spyro Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Final Fantasy VII are the remakes I know of. those are completely new games and some of them, particularly FFVIIR (apparently) changed much of the gameplay too, not just re-made graphics.
Then there's the remasters that are essentially remakes... Modern Warfare remastered and Modern Warfare 2: Remastered... These did way more than the bare minimum 720p --> 1080p/1600p upgrade.
There are 100s of remasters that are basically just higher resolution versions of the original, which I do not count nor particularly care for, with the exception of The Last of Us (I had to double dip on what is the game of the decade :) )
@Jag85: Please don't mention the Twin Snakes man, I have been wanting to strangle people mentioning Twin Snakes to me ever since 2008. Back when MGS4 came out and paid homage MGS1 I really, really wanted MGS1 to be fully remade in MGS4 HD-graphics with similar over shoulder TPS gameplay. I mean they already had Shadow Mosses in Act 4... The job was almost half way done.
Not a silly Gamecube game. Who even asked for that anyway? why would you remake a 5 year old game... that's a waste for sure. It would be like remaking The Last of Us for PS5... Nahh man, give me The Last of Us in 16K/Pixar graphics in 2040 on PS8 when I'm old and reminiscing the great TLOU to my teenage children.
But as you said, Twin Snakes is 17 years old now... even that is almost due for a remake. And now we've progressed much further, 1080p, 1440p, 1600p, 2160p(4K) and of course MGS5 had its barely utilised Fox Engine. By the time the original trilogy starts getting remade the Fox Engine would be outdated... would need something like Decima, REengine or a new 'Snake Engine' .. idk :)
Anyway, there isn't a game on the planet that needs a remake more!
... Except maybe MG1 / MG2 as you said. I haven't even tried these games, and let's be real the only people who are old enough to experience these at launch would be in the 40s by now :p
I assume those two games are really short? Perhaps Konami can mold them into one game "Metal Gear remake" for around 2021. 4K/60fps, on PS5/XSX either updated Fox or brand new engine. Modern MGS4/MGS5 controls. Gameplay / pacing / etc doesn't even have to be remotely similar, just re-create the maps / level design and follow the storyline, make OSTs, add in full voice-acting etc.
2023, 2025, 2027 the 'Solid' trilogy. That's far into the future and by then Sons of Liberty / Snake Eater would be overdue a remake IMO :)
@dxmcat: It works because those who seek out nostalgia get to relive those memories 'as they remembered them', while new-comers who are either too young or just simply missed out on those classic, all-time great games get to experience them 'as new'. it's win-win for both groups of people. You sour grapes can just ignore them and move on. Or play a 25 year old game in 2020
@sleepnsurf: Not played a AAA game since TLOU/UC2? Yeah lets pretend MGS5, Witcher 3, Red Dead II, God of War, Zelda BOTW, Divinity II, Sekiro, Soulsborne, Death Stranding don't exist :p
I'd say every game I mentioned matches UC2. Not much lives up to TLOU though.

MG 1 & 2 were both included in MGS3 Subsistence. They could also be played on MSX emulators, and there's an inferior NES version of MG1. I would recommend playing the versions of MG 1 & 2 included in MGS3 Subsistence.
MG1 is fairly short. But MG2 is quite lengthy. If anything, I found MG2 to be somewhat longer than its sequel MGS. Nevertheless, MG2 holds up very well. Much of the gameplay and plot elements in MGS were actually recycled from MG2. It's a shame MG2 didn't release in the West (until MGS3 Subsistence), because it was groundbreaking for its time. MG2 is one of the best 8-bit games I've played, with solid stealth gameplay, Metroidvania-esque level design, and good story.
MG 1 & 2 each deserve their own separate full-blown remakes. They're the only games where we actually get to see the mentor-student relationship between Big Boss and Solid Snake, and their relationship with Gray Fox before he became a cyborg ninja. There is so much you can add to the plot and character development, like with FFVII Remake. And if you think about it, MG 1 & 2 are essentially the sequels to MGSV, since they continue the Big Boss story while also being the origin story of Solid Snake, coming full circle.
@Jag85:
Thanks for your input. Maybe one day We'll have it remade to a '20s game and I'll experience that masterpiece :)
I mean come on Konami, Metal Gear is essentially dead without Kojima, shouldn't be too hard simply copying the gameplay and graphics/cinematics of MGS5 into every older game.
@Litchie: 10 dollars? Are you really bitching over 10 dollars? How cheap are you...
And it took me 14 hours with Leon and about 9 hours with Claire.
23 hour game, I paid 20 dollars for that. Less than $1/hr is some of the cheapest entertainment money can buy

Need to play Doom Eternal fam
I know!
@cainetao11: No remake... yet ;)
Kinda why I said "hasn't been better". It indicates past to now. Future is left wide open.

Remake 2 is insanely good, not your type of jam?
