That was insane in membrane, and the system sold like bonkers. Do you think the PS4 will have a similar fate? The PS4 killed it at $199 this Black Friday, but imagine if it was $99 permanently. Or will that ever happen? I don't think PS3 ever did..

$199 is the new $99.

PS2 had no Hard Disk, modem, HDMI cable, WIFI plus a pathetic amount of RAM, allowing it to be even cheaper.

@EG101: actually, the $99 slim had built in ethernet. But you're not wrong, and inflation helps too

I remember a $89.99 CAD Gamecube.

Only thing stopping me from buying it was the backwards compatibility of the Wii.

Ultra-Slim will probably reach $150. I would be absolutely shocked if PS4 ever reaches $99. Some OEM would have to have a surplus of mechanical laptop drives they want to dump in a restructuring move for there to be a supply of that kind of part. Then Sony would be on the hook to buy up more supply for the inevitable rush on the console at that price point so they would be losing any kind of profit gained from hardware sales. The RAM I am less concerned about because there are some indications that (G)DDR6 is about to be ramped up in the near future which will tank the price of GDDR5 from the supply-side. Non-UHD Bluray drives are reaching rock-bottom in terms of manufacturing costs already and the APU will be a tidy underwrite when AMD stops collecting royalties as their deal with Sony twilights.

Long-story-short, the hard drive means there will always be a ceiling on the PS4s manufacturing price that is higher than the PS2.

I don't remember that exactly. Honestly, PS4 is my first Sony console and even if I followed the console generations from 5th, I was never interested in PlayStation. Nintendo was my first priority, but when I looked at the market of video games few years ago, my thinking was changed, and now PS4 is my favorite console.

Sell a unit without an optical drive or an HDD and just have an open slot for one and you might get there. Thatll never happen though.

Sony don't need to

You will probably start seeing Xbox Ones being given away with Happy Meals from McDonalds, because that system is dead and a complete flop.

Mom got me the $80 Walmart special Gamecube with Zelda Collector's Edition for Christmas when I was a kid. Such a great deal.

I already had multiple PS2's by then, so not really. I'm not even sure I ever bought a $99 PS2. I think the last one I bought (the PS2 slim I still have) was $129

I did buy a $99 GameCube though, as my last purchase from that gen.

Near the end of it's life, didnt' they did sell a PS3 with some tiny 12GB flash memory or something like that? That console made no sense, but Sony did it. It wasn't even that cheap as I recall. Only like $20 less than the one with a HDD.

If the Switch would hit that number I'd buy it in a heart beat. The hardware configuration of the machine doesn't really justify its current price, the console is far too weak to be €300.

Yeah, the Switch sucks for those of us that don't want another tablet.

If they just made it a tiny console they could sell it for like $149 and it would sell like gangbusters and probably still have a bigger profit margin vs. the tablet version at $299. The only reason it is $299 is because it's a tablet, and even then it's a bit of a ripoff in terms of price vs. performance. The Nintendo premium is at least $100 on that thing.

I honestly wouldn't mind if Nintendo made a cheaper non-tablet version of the switch, which is essential a Dock-mode only console (or just plain regular console), now THATS an idea! But like I said, i refuse to pay anything above €100 given the specs of the hardware (or just make it easier for me and port your games to PC......)

Yes! I would be all for that: essentially a PS TV-esque version of the switch. I am not forking out 300 dollars (or likely more due to accessories) for that level of hardware just for portability (and a plastic screen? no way Nintendo).

The portability is just absolutely an antithesis to the motion controls. I would forego the portability in exchange for a lower-priced stationary version.

Either that, or an updated "Switch XL" or something with a glass screen and better docking system. Do it Nintendo! I gotta get a switch.

I can’t really see any of the current consoles to ever drop to $99 to be honest.

@SolidGame_basic: It's also pathetic how little sense of humor the social mindset has.
