With the infamous removal of OtherOS in the earlier editions of PS3s, I just wanted to get an idea of the average System Wars user's views on choices for what they can do with their consoles so I'll keep this poll short and sweet.

It's real simple. I myself was never hardcore into using the feature of OtherOS but I loved the fact that I could have an alternative OS whenever I wanted and the fact I actually PAID for it. For me as a consumer, it all comes down to choice. I like choices, as opposed to having no choices and being dictated to what I can and cannot do with my system that I have spent MY money on.

IMHO it takes someone truly crazy to claim that they do not like choice when it comes to something they have purchased, especially when they once had a choice in something and then that choice no longer exists anymore and turned into a one-way only situation.

This also applies to Sony not reinstating PS2 playback on current production PS3s...although this doesn't fall under the same vein as the removal of OtherOS.

So fellow gamers, do you like choices or not?

How is something that is completely useless (to me, anyway), considered a choice?

To me, having Other OS compared to not having it is the exact same thing; there is no choice, regardless if it has been removed or not.

I, outright, could not care less for losing the feature. I paid (at launch) for my PS3 to play games and blu-rays, and that was my reason for purchasing the system. I'm not gonna get into a breakdown of each individual thing my money went toward with regards to the PS3, because I just don't care.

I guess it's kinda like a "you don't know what you had until it's gone" feeling for you. Sure people like having choice, but sometimes choice is unnecessary when you know what you want.

I don't agree with your poll, it seems like you're trying to make it look like someone who doesn't care about the feature doesn't like choices. I just don't care about the feature, not that I don't like choices, nothing to do with choices.

I don't buy a console for having choice and options. I buy consoles because of the exclusives and because of the closed system/streamlined experience. For choice I stick with my PC.

I fail to see what our personal preferences of console features has to do with our IQs. Personally, I like having the option to install OtherOS if I choose to, but I much prefer the option to play games online without modders and hackers ruining all the fun. So, if Sony felt they needed to remove the feature to maintain the security of their system then they did what was best for the majority of us. That's my "mental state" for ya. ;)

Well then choices are nice but I don't care about this particular choice since I would never use it.

Backwards Compatability is on the ps3, it just has to be UNLOCKED.

This means if you owned ps1 and ps2 games you could play them all on your ps3 with OtherOS. Sony relized they could make money selling there older ps1 and ps2 games on PSN instead of allowing people to play the ps1/ps2 discs they already own, instead making them have to re-buy the game on PSN to be able to play there favorite ps1/ps2 games. They want to sell the games and make money instead of allowing people to use the ps3 to play ps2 and ps1 games. its not something they ahve to add its already there to be unlocked with OtherOS.

I know alot of people who bought a ps3 for that very reason to use OtherOS for backwards compatability and other things.

I didnt by a ps3 myself for the otherOS but I relize that alot of people did and sony lied to them.

Leaving OtherOS on there would be great and it should still be on there imo, give people the option to use what they have bought as they want.

Would not use it myself, but I can see why others are very pissed and its not right what Sony has done. At the same time what these hacekrs have done releasing all thsi info about peoples families,etc.. is not good either, the whole situation is a bad one, one that could have been avoided.

Great comment...I pity those who cheat/mod online and ruin the online experience for others, especially the ones who do it with a pirated copy of a game to people with a legit copy.

Sony advertised a feature to its customer base, then took it back, completely locking out the system in the process (you cant play ANY game from the last 2 years unless you wipe the option). They completely took something away. The PS3 has been a disaster from a managerial point of view.

I like choice... if it was on the BOX as a feature when i bought it, then they removed it after, they STOLE it from me.

If I buy a car with a 10 year warranty, and then they remove it to a zero year warranty... that too was stolen.

If I bought a house with 4 bedrooms and a shed, and the previous owners came and demolished my shed AFTER i moved in then this is what Sony just did... a useless shed that I still owned.

What if I paid for xbox live and they removed the ability to play games online? Same **** different pile.

I cant imagine Sony possibly coming ahead in the lawsuit for that exact reason. I think its going to cost them a cool hundred million or so, and it was all for naught with the key being leaked eventually anyway.

Why can't more people think like this guy. Great comment.

It's not about the fact OtherOS gave you an alternative OS for your PS3 that you paid for...it's the principle of what a controlling corporation like Sony can do at the click of their fingers and bully us, the consumer.

The secondary argument that comes out of this is regarding what Sony did to PS2 playback..."who cares, I wanna play PS3 games not old games". Come on, would anybody sane enough really NOT want PS2 playback as a CHOICE from a current in-production PS3 model? For the trolls, I guess not...

Exactly, "Hey I know you juust bought this card two months ago but we are going to have to come by and turn the AC and ability to use 4WD off, sorry security reasons". Some people just dont relize this is a consumer rights issue, not hate against sony the brand.

I would never use OtherOS myself except for maybe playing a few old ps1 games, but I do relize that some people bought the ps3 with that in mind, even if I didnt.

Sony didn't remove PS2 playback, the only feature they removed was Other OS. If you bought a 60gb PS3 or 80gb PS3, you can still play PS2 games.

Yes, Sony removed an advertised feature, but if you read the express warranty that comes in every PS3 box you'll clearly see where it states that they maintain the right to do so. Does that make it right? Not necessarily. But if you want to break down the morality of the situation we should ask if it was right for hackers to try and use the OtherOS feature to exploit the system. No it wasn't. They should have left it the hell alone. If they had we wouldn't be talking about this right now.

Bully the consumer? Yea, Sony really sucker punched us in the back of the head on this one. Yes, the principle of the matter is what is the driving force, but look at it from a realistic point of view. I don't mind that Sony removed the option, and I'm sure you could rebuttal saying that I'm, "weak and allowing Sony to walk all over me," but the reality of the situation is, I'm not going to waste my effort and time to argue against some feature that I never used.

Couldnt' have said it better myself.

If you bought a 60gb PS3 or 80gb PS3, you can still play PS2 games.

IF you bought a certain model lol, what about for those who did not? And what about ps1 games?

WTF are you saying? If you bought a model that did not support BC then you cannot complain. You bought it knowing full well what it could and could not do. And ALL PS3s - even today - can play PS1 games.

For those that did not, they should of had a general idea of what they where purchasing in the first place. A PS3 that can not play PS2 games. All PS3 models play PS1 games btw.

Sony didn't remove PS2 playback, the only feature they removed was Other OS. If you bought a 60gb PS3 or 80gb PS3, you can still play PS2 games.

This is true, newer PS3's actually didn't specify PS2 backwards compatibility on the box when they didn't have the chip in the system. OtherOS however was labeled. Hardware iterations that are inferior to the predecessor is not illegal.

They did bring this on themselves, but I dont think end users should suffer for it (from sony OR hackers)

How is this poll/thread gonna help you determine the "gamer's" average IQ? That makes no sense what so ever.

Everyone likes choices. Choices are always good.

Now there is the poll which mainly mentioned choices and whether or not we like having them.

So people should say yes in the poll.

Now the topic is about the PS3 and them taking out the feature for another operating system. To most people the otherOS is useless and we could care less about having it.

Just because we dont care if there is the option for another OS doesnt mean we dont like choice!

People need to start reading when quoting me...I said it would've been nice if there was the CHOICE for PS2 playback in current in-production PS3s.

It's nice that all PS3s can play PS1 games but they just want to milk people dry to rebuy their PS2 collection...although I'm a sucker for HD remakes I should still be given the CHOICE.

99% of people with PS3's likely never knew that it even supported other OS's, knew what these where, how to use them, and what could be done with them.

The Other OS feature was, and is, practically irrelevant.

That is sad but true.

You did have a choice. You could've bought a PS3 before they discontinued the SKU's with PS3 B/C. Sony doesn't have to make a PS3 with B/C if they don't want to.

They don't have to give us any choice if they don't want to. Nobody is actually saying they don't like choice.
