Report: Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics remakes still in development

A Final Fantasy 9 remake is reportedly still in development, alongside a remake of Final Fantasy Tactics.

According to noted industry insider ‘NateTheHate,’ who has a record of revealing information about video games ahead of their official reveal, both titles, which have been rumored for several years, are still on the way.

Replying to a user on X who asked about the status of both games, NateTheHate said, “Both remain in active development. FFIXR isn’t expected to see release in 2025. Maybe we’ll see it launch in 2026.”

Final Fantasy 9 was originally released in 2000 for the PlayStation. It was directed by Hiroyuki Ito, who later directed Final Fantasy 12.

The game was re-released in 2010 as a PS1 Classic for PS3 and PSP, with Vitasupport arriving in 2012.

In 2016, the game was released for mobile and PC. It then came to PS4 in 2017, and to Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in 2019.

Final Fantasy Tactics, the other game NateTheHate mentioned, was initially released in 1997 for the PlayStation. The game was developed by Yasumi Matsuno, who would go on to develop Final Fantasy XII.

In 2021, a Final Fantasy 9 remake was one of many unannounced titles listed in a GeForce Now database leak.

These included several Square Enix games that would later be officially confirmed such as the PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, a Chrono Cross remaster and Kingdom Hearts 4.

Would definitely love a Final Fantasy Tactics Remake. Loved the original game. Would also certainly be down for a Final Fantasy IX Remake as well. Not at the top of my favourite FF games but it was a damn good game nonetheless.

I wasn't a big fan of 9, but I don't mind this trend if it means they eventually make a remake of 6.

Hopefully it's remade into one game and not a trilogy. Tactics would be cool in HD2D.

Though they’re probably going to make it realtime; after FFVIIR, I‘ve no trust that modern day developers will concede to the original foundational design tenets that are responsible for the games being so beloved as they are.

Holy shit guys, what if they remake X next? Wowee. And then?! What if they remake 6? How rad would that be?! And then! What if they remake XI?? Duuude, so awesome. After that, what if they remake 4?! I remember in 2010 final fantasy 7 remake was most anticipated unannounced game. literally every ones dream game it was.

now every other remake announcement is "yawn another remake".

Those are both great games to remake.

Well, I wouldn't hold my breath for an FF7-level remake, but both seem to be well suited for the Switch 2.

In fact, both Bravely Default 2, which is inspired by FF9, and Triangle Strategy, which is inspired by FF Tactics, have been very well received on the Switch platform. Maybe that's Square Enix's trump to play at the Switch 2 presentation in April.
