Resident Evil 2 Remake officially confirmed by Capcom

Classic survival horror Resident Evil 2 is officially being remade, Capcom has announced.

While details on the project won't be revealed for some time, VideoGamer.com understands that the title will be a complete remake of the original game built for modern platforms.

The remake is being produced by Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, the producer behind this year's Resident Evil HD Remake.

"We're pleased to confirm that Resident Evil 2 has been approved for development," a Capcom representative said in a statement provided to VideoGamer.com today.

"As the title is only just starting its development cycle we unfortunately don't have any additional information or assets to share at this time. However, for now we want our fans to know that we appreciate all the feedback and support we've received on this title. We're looking forward to delivering this highly anticipated Resident Evil experience that fans have been waiting for."

Formats for the game have yet to be announced, but fans should probably expect it to hit PS4, Xbox One and PC. A release date has not been confirmed.

"It's been great to see so many positive comments from fans that have pushed the project to get approved," added Hirabayashi. "The team here at Capcom Japan really appreciates fans' passion and support and will do our best to bring fans what they really want."

I remember in REmake when they remixed the Aqua Ring music as a homage. They should do the same for the main hall of the RPD.

They need to get the original voice actor back for the title reading, his voice was the best. All of the other ones sound like pure shit, this guys voice was gold for it.

Cool. Though it took me a little bit of time to get accustomed to the fixed cameras once again (though I couldn't get back into "tank" controls), the game was a blast to revisit, I did like 3 or 4 playthroughs in the first couple weeks of having it. Though I never played the GC remake (though I picked it up a while back), the differences between the PS1 original I was familiar with and this version gave it a bit of freshness on top of the cosmetic upgrade. Can't wait to see what they do for RE2.

I hope one day though the series get an upgrade or big overhaul in the way that we revisited the original mansion in the RE5 DLC, but as a proper length game instead. That is, remake these games with proper 3D environments, fixed over the shoulder camera, with modern day combat mechanics.

Haven't played resident evil 2 since it launched a billion years ago... Maybe it's time.

Great news. So,,, what will happen to fan remake? I hope they support Unreal Engine 4 remake in third person but don't think that's gonna happen. Anyway,,, it's excellent news. Resident Evil 2 was excellent.

Finally.......very good news.I hope we will see also the Resident Evil 3 Remake.

I'm really happy about this I have not played the old RE titles before 4 other than my current progress into HD REmake. Ultimately the Tank controls are the issue, the recent remake of 1 and the newer updated controls have made it playable for me. Ultimately I would rather have a RE4 style playstyle, but if it plays more modernly like REmake HD then I can at least enjoy the game. To me this is one of the dire remakes I would want, as I never played RE2, but I want to, but due to the horrible gameplay controls I never will unless it's updated.

All in all, I'm happy about this.

On another note though I feel like they need to reboot the series. It has gotten way to complicated in it's story to the point it's convoluted. I loved 4 and had ton's of fun with 5, and while I played 6 some parts worked others didn't (Leon's campaign is the only one I remotely enjoyed). Story wise I have read up on what happened in 1,2 and 3. I feel like they need to forget 6. Even 5 in some of its parts made sense and felt like a good conclusion to the series. But if they are remaking 2, then a reboot is pretty much out the window. Maybe they should just entirely remake 6 and pretend the first version never existed.

Resident Evil 3 would probably benefit from a remake more, as it took several steps back from Resident Evil 2, it generally feels more like a stand alone expansion pack than a sequel.

Apart from all the stuff out there that isn't a remake or remaster and also the fact you are not obligated to buy anything at all if you don't want it. Cry more though.

Like we really need more remakes this gen. The game has aged horribly, and its probably still going to show in the remake.

I just hope they don't shut down that RE2 Reborn because that's a pretty cool project in the style of re4, re5.

There's something to say for the suspense fixed camera angles can add however.

It's probably best the avoid the pc version, a very poor port.

Gamecube version, with special magic, is probably the best version.

I'm actually want to see RE3 remake. It was fun, semi open world and lots of action. Freaking Nemesis was rough, he actually chase you 9-10 blocks or rooms. MrX rom RE2 was a joke compare to Nemesis!

Yes, but Mr X is used more sparingly, making him more effective. Over the course of the game, Mr X pops up around 3-4 times, punctuated by William Birkin encounters. In Resident Evil 3, (aside from the worm boss) Nemesis is the sole boss character, becoming redundant due to the frequency of encounters. Once player has figured out the tactic to defeat him i.e. running into his arm.. it can be reused over and over.

Never was a big fan of any of the Resident Evil games except for Resident Evil 4 which I thought was a great game though I can understand the hate that it gets from the hardcore fans since it was very different from the other RE games before it. But anyways It's still cool that fans will finally get a remake of RE2. But since Capcom isn't as good as they use to be, will they be able to make a good remake?

That's because it is a side story/expansion. The real RE3 was at first a game that got scraped(which was being worked mostly by the team that ended up doing RE4) and was supposed to be a Playstation game. When that fell apart it was the game now known as Code Veronica for the Dreamcast. Biohazard: Last Escape/Resident Evil: Nemesis was just a quick cash grab from Capcom when they realized that the series was a hit and that they could pump a lot of titles in little time. Until Sony convinced them that they should remain loyal to their console and should at least complete the trilogy, following the original plan. Then they simply slapped a 3 in an almost finished game that was always conceptualized as side stuff and added the Code Veronica to the other one that was still around half way of production since it had the new engine and all the bells and whistles.

Terribly underrated game, the best of the two, & my favorite RE game. Nemesis was a great addition to the franchise.

Yeah, that worries me a bit as well. But, only time will tell. If the remake turns out to be crap, at least the classic remains unchanged. That goes for the FF7 remake as well...
