https://www.gamerevolution.com/features/485581-resident-evil-4-worst-game-in-series

That feeling of control is one that seems so ingrained in Leon’s character for Resident Evil 4. Now the bodyguard to the President, which itself feels horribly cliché, Leon spends pretty much the entire game taking names and kicking ass, always with a clever throwaway line to add to the mix. Again, it’s such an extreme departure to what we were given in previous Resi games that it only works to make Resi 4 feel like a totally different series.

I agree with him. worst is RE6 by far but RE4 was also pretty bad imo.

one of big problem is leon cannot move while shoot, and shooting is terrible so is controls. it was mess over all and yes i played 2012 HD remastered on PC and it still suck.

Sorry, but if lack of mobility and shooting is a big issue then RE4 is hardly the worst offender. Anyhow, sure, controls of RE4 are more an issue that conflicts with modern dual analog controls standards. Always makes going back to play it a challenge but one I still manage to overcome each time.

Even RE5 was moving to play exact same way as RE4 but they added dual analog controls later in development, though, they couldn't do moving while shooting, game had been designed without controls in mind so gameplay balanced for that, they'd have to redo everything just to add moving and shooting because players would be far more capable.

They finally modernized controls for RE6, but most people didn't bother with that. But yeah, modern controls make players too capable, as a result RE6 is more action less horror, and it was universally panned, though I would say most of that was typical overdramatic gamer overkill kind of criticism that has become typical these days.

Anyhow, as a result, RE6 was a mistake others learned from. I think Evil Within especially found balance where RE6 couldn't, though as consequence there it made early game play really slow but helped with atmosphere greatly.

Nice clickbait.

The article is pretty much saying that RE5 and RE6 are the worst, yet still proclaimed RE4 to be the worst just because it inspired them. Which is a silly argument. Like one of the top comments says, that would be like calling Empire Strikes Back the worst Star Wars movie just because it inspired the prequels.

I went into Resi4 skeptical of the hype, and walked way thinking, my goodness that is a seminal game if I ever played one.

Also, best on Wii.

RE6 handily takes that honour and 5 was hot on the heels (though I did enjoy it in coop.) If we're talking mainline games, then i'd take the originals over 4, but that's just preference. I wouldn't deny just how the departure in RE4 was both necessary, and an excellent addition at the time.

The only way I can see this argument being made effectively is if you cite Resident Evil 4 as a jump-off point that led the series in a bad direction, in the same way you can argue "Stress Relief" is the worst episode of The Office; not because the episode itself is bad but because it effectively eliminated all the rules of the show and allowed the show to decay into a caricature of its former self.

As a video game, Resident Evil 4 is a masterpiece. Not being able to move and shoot was a deliberate game mechanic, not a flaw, that upped the tension during combat significantly. You can disagree with the choice to make it that way, but you can't deny knowing you have to remain stationary while a lunatic with a chainsaw is charging at you is one of the most stressful moments in any game, ever. It was the correct choice to allow you to move while shooting in future Resident Evil games, but looking at a game from 2005 through a 2019 lens isn't exactly fair, in this regard.

If they ever modernize RE4, which they should, making Leon mobile while shooting will require the developers to completely redesign the way enemies attack.

@ghosts4ever: RE4 made RE relevant again. It started the over the shoulder camera angle still used to this day. It may have not aged incredibly well but it is a game that has defined a genre.

Yes, it is a fantastic game. No, it's not a joke post. TC got the weird opinion that RE4 is a terrible game, and since many loves the game, it's extra fun for him to say it's terrible.

I can understand people disliking it for making RE a different series than it was before, but saying RE4 is terrible is just silly.

True about the over-the-shoulder thing. RE4 inspired the over-the-shoulder view in nearly every third-person action game that came after it. If people want to blame RE4 for its "negative" influence (action-horror), then they should also "blame" RE4 for its positive influence (redefining third-person action games).

Lol. RE4 is actually really good. Actual worst in series options:

  • RE Survivor (PS1)
  • RE Dead Aim (PS2)
  • RE Gaiden (GBC)
  • RE Operation Raccoon City (PS3/360)
  • Umbrella Corps (PS4/X1)

Not even the horrible RE7 makes the possibilities list because it's still a good game, just not a good RE game.

@scatteh316: It is hard to compare the Resident Evil games as nos. 1-3 are very different from 4-6, and no. 7 is again very different with its 1st person perspective. Personally I thought Capcom went way wrong with no. 4 because they turned the series into an action game (a fine one though, I'll admit). I strongly prefer 1-3, with its heavy emphasis on horror and scaring the hell out of gamers.

I played RE4 for the first time maybe 4-5 years ago, and honestly, it lived up to the hype. I had a great time with it. The pacing is great and good pacing is becoming so damn rare these days

easily the best in the series from the ones i've played, though I haven't played anything pre-4 and I haven't played 6.

If they ever modernize RE4, which they should, making Leon mobile while shooting will require the developers to completely redesign the way enemies attack.

The stop-and-shoot mechanic is one of the things that makes RE4 unique to this day, because there just isn't anything else quite like it. That's a mechanic which has disappeared from third-person action games, so it's unlikely we'll ever see a game quite like RE4 again.

In many ways, RE4 is like a throwback to classic arcade lightgun shooters, which were similarly designed around stop-and-shoot. Which makes RE feel like an off-rails lightgun shooter. Before RE4, Capcom were experimenting with off-rails lightgun shooters like RE Survivor and Dead Aim. And while those games weren't very good, they laid the groundwork for what RE4 would become. In fact, Dead Aim had a camera system quite similar to the over-the-shoulder camera of RE4. So if anything, it was the earlier Survivor and Dead Aim spin-offs that started RE's shift to action-horror. Either way, if you think of RE4 as an off-rails lightgun shooter meets third-person action-horror, then its unique game design makes a lot of sense.

And yes, the levels and enemies were all designed around the stop-and-shoot mechanic. That's what made it a great game. Because of how the whole game was well-designed around the mechanic.

I loved RE4 so much that I went thru it a second time on NG+. IMHO it's one the best games of its generation.

I bought RE5, but the magic was just wasn't there. I skipped 6 and have been meaning to pickup 7.

?.... Plot is the target of criticism in a game?... Really every other Resident Evil before 4 felt like you where controlling a tank, you would think that a reviewer of I don't know a medium where interaction is the primary part of the art form would appreciate the departure of a fixed camera angle and poor mobility in a game based on survival but I don't know I guess there are people out there who literally like to be suffocated while having a orgasm.

RE4 is definitely one of the worst RE games imo but itsnt even close to being as bad as RE5. I didnt play RE6 but i cant see it being as bad as 5 was, they cant surely get any worse than 5.

6 is far worse than 5. Far, far worse.

Loading Video...

That being said, there was a fair amount of excitement surrounding Leon's campaign, as it was more a return to horror form... It was alright, but the rest of the game was just terrible.

Yeah, this was serious clickbait. One of the most popular RE titles ever, and an article released just after the RE2 remaster. Along with that, they actually find 5 and 6 to be worse... They then criticize Leon for not being scared enough, even though he's a serious veteran in the franchise, just like Chris Redfield.

@scatteh316: agree!

Resident evil 4 isnt a bad game, its a pretty good game but it strayed too far from the orginal resident evil its not really resident evil to me.

Same goes for 5 and 6.
