I personally think this series is way overrated. Im really mainly going to talk about Resident Evil 2 because its the best one to the describe the series overrall.

Those god awful camera angles would drive me insane. I am walking along and the camera switch's on me and all of a sudden a Zombie is chewing on my neck. its annoying and the developers tried their best to annoy us with this. It makes aiming very hard in some parts of the game and can make you miss alot of shots overall. Its just so horrible and the camera will jerk around at times if your getting attacked making it hard to see whats going on. Its just terrible overall and they knew that the was horrible but went with it any way. It makes it hard to pick up items and interact with stuff with such a horrible camera.

Another thing that annoys me about Resident Evil is that its not very scary. Most of the time the scares are cheap and when you get out of the police station the game is no longer scary and uses cheap scares to scare you. What I mean by cheap scares is something coming out of no where. I hate it when an enemy falls from the celling followed by a loud noise. That is not scary just very irritating.

The tank controls are also terrible. Along with terrible camera angles its just a night mare with these controls. Its so hard to pick up certain items or do certain things because of this...

But the worse thing about this game is THE BACKTRACKING. Jesus this drove me insane. You are given very little space for your items so you have to constantly run back to item boxes to get the right item you need for a puzzle and such. Meaning you have to store healing items,Weapons, ammo, and other puzzle items away for other items. Its just stupid and very frustrating overall and it annoys the hell out of me.

I find this series to be overrated overall. Resident Evil 4 fixed alot of these things but it blows my mind that these past games had these terrible annoyances.

Anyone else agree?

The only thing that used to annoy me about the games was the camera angles, and RE4 fixed that very well.

Lack of puzzles.I'm not going to complain about it being more action/adventure than horror because I was ok with that but it didn't have enough puzzles and it seems RE5 will not either.

True, can't say I miss them alot though.

edit: I haven't played RE4 in a while, I forgot about the puzzles that the game apparently includes.

No there weren't planty and in RE4 the ones that are there are easy the only one that needs some work is putting the right pieces in the right place when playing as Ashly. It didn't have as much as the other RE games. RE4 focused more on action compared to the previous games.

the amount of puzzles in RE4 was fine. And if you ask me both had easy puzzles. Most of them I could easily do in a couple secounds of thinking.

RE is the only survival horror with such awesome character and story development, from the whole virus issues. Its entertaining and simply, well done...with Silent Hill right behind it. Just because you don't fancy it, doesn't make it overrated....it just isn't your game. lol

BioForge predated first Resident Evil, was pioneer in everything and crushes it in every single department, yet no one played that game.

Just another reason why gaming is becoming so dull and boring nowadays. Games are being dumbed down for the casual crowd and most require no to minimum skill to play.

I disagree with what the TC is saying, but I disagree with this even more. The RE series has always had terrible, cheesy B-movie plots with even worse writing. It's like every single horror cliche rolled into one :?.

I'm sorry, but thats your opinion. I fancy the style of story and dialog, More so RE4 since it was much improved over the Classic ones. To each there own, putting a confused face doens't make your post right. There is NO one game everyone can like.

I just really enjoy the characters, virus setting for Resident Evil, its well done.

Perhaps the series and genre just isn't for you because some of the stuff you mentioned is why the RE series is celebrated. I think it's a good series overall that has a fair share of stinkers. The RE series was never a well written one though. Not in the ones I've played.

The Resident Evil series saved the Survival horror genre and killed it with the same series. Resident Evil 1-Code veronic minus the horrid lightgun games and GBA rippoffs were one of the best definitions of Survival horror. The game didn't need to rely on closet scares just freak you out, it was the fact that one of those closet scares was just around the corner and you knew it did the job just right, not knowing what will be around the corner, if you will have enough ammo to survive, what about the few healing items that exist in your inventory will they be enough to last you? It was not just closet scares and bad camera angles with tank controls, the game created a well thought out story and a realistic scenario for it to play through, especially when RE2 hit the scene it was a amazing game for it's time, of couse fixed camera angles and tank controls are a thing of the past but many games still implemented them as a form of restriction of movement to create a more tense atmosphere knowing you can't just ditch into a door to avoid all of your problems. it brought Zombies to video games and they mixed like Peanut butter and Jelly. Now if were talking about RE4....ya I feel it's overated because it turned its back on its heritage as a Survival Horror game, you neither need to attempt to survive much with the bountifull ammo and the mysterious and never explained merchant who sold you high tech weapons for cash that every villager and dog and monster seemed to carry around with them considering they had no use for it. The game took a 360 and perhaps saved the series but dealt a crippiling blow to the genre. Capcom who pulled the series into the limelight was quick to pull the rug from under it as soon as they could incorperate Gears of War into the series. We may as well call it Resident of war1. Because the series has next to nothing in common with its predacessors, minus a few characters who still seem nothing like there former selfs. From rookie cop fighting to survive in a city of zombies to pimped out FBI agent saving the president daughter....even the "Zombies" or Ganados they should be properly pointed at, are not zombies, they have nothing to do with the progenerator or G virus, or any variant of it. I could go on for ages about gripes about how RE4 is not a Resident Evil game, but I will admit Resident Evil 4 is a amazing game and I still play it to this day, but its a shame they had to use the Resident Evil franchise as a gineu pig for this Horror/action crossover that failed to transfer any of the Survival Horror elements into it and let the action elements overpower the entire game. I like the series better with zombies and a good story. President daughter? Come on....what is this a old movie?

Survival horror games are meant to cause anxiety... and what causes more anxiety than being chased by a Crimson Head only to forget how to control your character and have a poor camera angle mess up where you are going, turning you back into the decrepit thing chasing you?

There was reasoning to the fixed camera angles and clunky controls... it was never designed as a fluid action game.

I don't think they're overrated, but they've changed over the years. IMO, they've changed for good. BUT RE5 looks a lot like RE4 in terms of gameplay (have you seen when Chris jumps down from a high area? It looks EXACTLY THE SAME as the movement done by Leon in RE4), so maybe this'll let us down hahahah (just kidding, I'm sure it'll be awesome)

Agree? Hell no! How old are you? I remember when RE and RE2 came out, my friends and I thought they were the best games ever. Are they dated now? Of course. Do you really believe kids born this year are going to be wowed by games from this year in 10-15 years?

I picked up the remake of the original resident evil for gamecube when it came out and I was pretty disappointed. Could someone please explain to me how bad controls made resident evil great? Dead Space has good controls and it's a great game.

I don't understand why you kids compare re4 to any of the previous installments. The only things they have in common are names and they both involve shooting guns. The old resident evils aren't for everyone, and I am personally sad that they are now replaced with the action-genre resident evil.

The old resident evils aren't for everyone, and I am personally sad that they are now replaced with the action-genre resident evil.flclempire
Sorry I don't wanna play games with terrible controls and bad camera. Really they changed it for the better thats for sure.

[QUOTE="bethwo"]The only thing that used to annoy me about the games was the camera angles, and RE4 fixed that very well. Salt_The_Fries
But vaporized many other things.

Could not have said it better myself...

:| I don't see why your complaining? Sure the controls took a while to get used to, and the camera was not the most responsive but for its time it was great, if not good enough for an avid game to easily complete the game. Not only that, RE games are scary, and have some of the best pacing IF NOT THE BEST pacing in gaming. Great boss fights and cutting edge graphics easily put the RE series on the forefront of survival horror games. Plus they don't limit you with ammo, now thats a cheap gameplay mechanic. Heres a crowbar to kill all your enemies, and a gun with 3 rounds :|

Whats funny about these controls comparisons in RE is, we didn't know the controls were bad. These newer control schemes weren't invented yet. It's like comparing '80s cell phones to the iphone. Back then it was all there was, so no problem.

I think the reason people are complaining is that they stuck with the bad control scheme even after it was readily apparent that they were bad, up until resident evil 4.

RES 4 and 5 are overrated. The others were classic. RE 4 changed way to much in the series, it should have just been a new game.

i got used to the controls pretty quickly, and i think the work well for what Capcom was trying to do. if the controls were like other games, it would be WAY too easy to dodge the zombies.

while i like RE4s camera better, the camera in the others isnt much of an issue. if you have a bad view, you simply listen for a moan, if you hear one, wait for the zombie to come into view before you shoot or run from it. if you dont hear one, move along.

as for scares, what did you really expect? ive never played a game that actually scared me, and i doubt i ever will. the things that suprise you are as close to a scare that you will get from any game.

the item boxes are spread out pretty well, so you never have to go that far to get an item you need. its a tiny annoyance, but i think its more realistic that you can carry only a few items at a time, and it also adds to the "survival horror" theme since you cant have 10 healing items and 15 guns with 500 ammo for each one on you.

Resident Evil 2 is my favorite in the series. Resident Evil 4 was great, but 2 had a great feeling to it.
