Here's the difference between these two coop modes:
With Resistance 2's coop you're not playing in the story campaign cooperatively, you're playing an entire alternate perspective of it. And I could understand why you couldn't coop in the story campaign mode because it was a weak story with uninteresting characters. Anyway, the coop didn't really have a story, all you do is kill the enemies so a gate can open, kill more bigger enemies so the next gate can open, and so on. Some people might like that simple basic thing, so yeah.
While with Left 4 Dead's coop, you're actually doing cooperative play in the main story mode itself. So you and your friends will experience the story together. And the way the story is presented is like a movie. Heck if you checked out the hype threads for Left 4 Dead you probably saw the cool movie posters for each campaign. Also every playthough in Left 4 Dead will be different, so it's not like Resistance 2's coop where you have to kill these expected enemies so that expected gate can open, it's just different everytime you play so you will always choose a different path and always have different strategy in Left 4 Dead.
Left 4 Dead was created with coop in mind while Resistance 2 coop was designed to be a mess. I mean think about think, what if all of you wanted to be the heavy gunner or whatever in Resistance 2, now what. That just mean that being the medic wasn't neccessary, because you could actually advance even if all of your team were heavy gunners. So I don't think Resistance 2's coop have depth at all.
So both coop of these two can be fun for anyone but if you want the better thoughtout coop Resistance 2 is left for dead and Left 4 Dead is the better choice to have a better experience.
