I guess this is another terrible game like FFXIII. Too bad. :(

I have to give it to GS, sometimes they just go waaaaaaaaay off with their scores.TomMcShea
What problems did you have with the game?
Probably hasn't tried it. Or maybe its not his taste so he automatically thinks it doesn't deserve the score. I thought it was an appropriate score though. :)
On Chapter 6, about 26 hours in. It's awesome. Unlocking Hexes is really addictive. I find clothing accessories and useful items 90% of the time, so I keep trying to get more and more blank hexes in order to find them. The combat reminds me a bit like Valkyria Chronicles with how much movement you're granted but then it goes crazy with it's John Woo acrobatic gunplay. As long as you go to the Arena and do the tutorial, it's not as difficult as some may lead you to believe. No need to do heavy grinding but stopping by to do some of the challenges in the Arena helps.
I think the score is spot on. The graphics are a little washy here and there but I like it. There's a lot of funny and quirky moments in the game. Everyone deserves to try it out!
Hmm I don't know. FF13 is taking forever to beat (damnit it's long) so I'll probably wait with this game.
I need a break from games for a couple of weeks, and they lost me at difficulty, and 60 hours of grinding. Listen I love my challenging games like any masochist. But right now I can barely bring myself to have the will power to finish Final Fantasy 13(a game i think is good) and try out Metro2033(a game i'm renting). I don't see me forcing myself through this with much success. I'll try it out later, maybe when it's cheaper. jg4xchampI know man, it feels like a slog doesn't it? I have an OPPRESSIVE back-log, I am talking ridiculous... easily a dozen games that I have to play more than half of. It's just getting stupid. I have barely touched Final Fantasy XIII or Left 4 Dead 2. I mean hardly even touched. Yet on the other hand, I can't sit idly by while good games are out there and not on my shelf, can I? So what do I do, I buy them, and they sit here, and I promise to play them, and it never happens. FML. I am sitting here with this backlog, and yet all I can think of is how much money will be left in my bank if I go out and splurge on Just Cause 2, Yakuza 3, and pre-order Red Dead, Alan Wake, and whatever else is coming out. I think I may really have an addiction.

What problems did you have with the game?
Well I've watched and played the game at my friend's a bit and I thought it was one of the worst games ever so I didn't buy it.
I mean the game is only half point below mass effect 2 and GOW3, same as FFXIII and heavy Rain and half point above just cause 2, games I believe are above and shoulders Resonance of Fate, a game that is on 360 and PS3 that have graphics of last gen consoles, have awful music and the gameplay is funny as hell, I just kept laughing out loud of how crappy the gameplay was the whole time I watched and played the game a bit.
Just to clarify, I don't mean any offence to you or your review, thats just my honest take on the review, I just can't believe it scored that high.

Especially given the fact that not only do you actually have to FIND THE TIME to play these games. But if you have taht time for yourself, sometimes you just don't wanna game. Games can be work, sometimes I just wanna relax :P

Which chapter were you? Because the early bits are pretty bland. I agree with the graphics, but the music is passable and the gameplay is the high light for the game, as enemies gets tougher, you will realize how deep the combat really is. I mean, every review out there praised this game for it's combat, there's gotta be something special about it.I know man, it feels like a slog doesn't it? Yeah, I think that's around Chapter 2 :P, game's still super early, story won't pick up until ~15 hours into the game, it's similar to FF13 for me, stick it out and the combat system simply gets better and better.
Heh, it's a post apocolyptic world, so it makes sense that all monsters are using wreckages to cover themselves or look run-down. I personally like the designs, they get pretty creative as well as you progress. If you are a fan of JRPG, give it a chance, you will like it

I know that sounds like madness but these games will still be here in a few months when yo have more time, you don't need to play everything :)

I don't know man, I might give it a try, might borrow it from my friend.
Resonance points FTW!!Kruiz_BathoryEverytime I screw up the triangle position so I can't use a tri attack and had to waste Resonance Points = :(. It's rare to see a JRPG putting so much focus on the positionings/movements of the characters as well as the choices of elemental attacks, it's usually done better in WRPG.

Well I guess that they tried to change the gameplay to make the game more appealing to western audience, I can only get around 3 resonance points and then do tri attack and airbornes.[QUOTE="Kruiz_Bathory"]Resonance points FTW!!salxis

Can you expand on this? It has one of the deepest and most inventive combat systems I've seen in an RPG.
Like I said I didn't play it that much, I just tried it out and it was a long time ago ( two months maybe, he got the import or something like that, I don't remember how exactly he got his game).
The thing that stood out to me is how the execution of the combat was, they always fly to shoot, there is an animation cutscene that keeps repeating itself and cut in the middle of the move the character performs, so the combat really doesn't try to show the player variety of moves and wasn't seamless because it doesn't continue, it always cuts-off in the middle of performances or combos...err...I can't describe it well, let me show you what Im talking about.
@2:17.

So you just don't like the way it looks? I can see that, it does have lots of camera movement and graphical effects, but the combat itself is far from laughable. It takes a while to get the hang of (and probably even longer if you're playing an import copy), but I don't think I've ever played a more satisfying JRPG. It really blew me away. This is one of my favorite games in a while.

yea I thought of that too, its not much from gameplay stand point as much as presentation, I guess it is combination of whole presentation in the game, from music to enemies to the environments to the stuff I showed you in the video earlier that put me off heh.
maybe I'll try it out and see how the combat is all about, I'll approach it differently next time I play and maybe I'll like it who knows.
yeah looking at the review.. the cons dont really startle me that much, the game looks beautiful from what I saw and tri-ace are always like that with their combat systemsillmatic87Its interesting though because those cons were enough for IGN to give it a mere 7.
Interesting, does that mean this game is on par with FF13? :PStevo_the_gamerFor GS maybe, but an 8.5 is the highest review for the PS3 version and is tied for second highest on the 360 version. The meta for PS3/360 is 74/77. In the "The Good" part everything that McShea list is pretty much hated by every other review except for the combat system.
It's good their picking up, Because star ocean was decent and IU was sort of a hit or miss. Hopefully they can begin to pump out more solid stuff.Sega is on the roll with Tri-Ace and Sega's Yakuza 3 this month. LOL FFXIII, higher budget and more development time but on par or not better than RoF.

hey, since you've been keepin an eye on this thread... anyone in the office workin there way through smt:strange journey and/or working on the review? really fun game so far, look forward to seeing the review:)It takes a while to get the hang of (and probably even longer if you're playing an import copy), but I don't think I've ever played a more satisfying JRPG. I agree 100%. I've already sunk 120 hours into this game and I'm still enjoying it as much as i did when i first started playing it. The game is a little hard up until chapter 6 or 7, but after you've built up enough bazels the game becomes really easy. There's just so much to do, and so many different things to do in this game. My favorite being the gun customizing. I don't know how much time I've spent trying to make my guns perfect.
Anyways, I've never heard of you before TomMcShea, but your review was excellent and it's also nice that you came here in SW to discuss your review. :)
