out of 5...

Whether it be Stars, Points, Tokens....out of 5 is possibly the most useless review system out there...I go to a site (giantbomb) see a game score 4/5 and think to myself wow that's really good, read the review and think...hmm sounds more like a 3/5 but is 3 out of 5 bad? Then later notice Battlefield scored a 5/5 when MGS4 scored 5/5, are these games really on par with one another?IT'S JUST TOO FREAKIN BROAD OF A SYSTEM!

Yep I'm bored and wanted to share my feelings on that type of review system....but I won't leave you guys out, so let me know what review system you can't stand.

I would agree.

A review system that goes by 20% intervals is surely not very accurate. I don't like those either.

i must agree, 20% intervals is not enough. out of 100 works perfectly (or otherwise known as the ??/10 system)

Yes.

The review system is fine, its like complaining about a /10 system because its too broad. Its hard enough to give a proper rating to a game anyway. You basically just play the game and make up a number. And its a lot easier when you can judge games more broadly.

The best scoring system is 0-100 with 1 point increments. Sure, it's the content of the review that should matter, but if you're giving out points, why not do it properly.

I used to not mind the five star system, but then Jeff Gerstmann and his team picked up that rating system, and now I can't stand it because it reminds me of him.

So yes, it's terrible. Jeff Gerstmann uses it.

It gives you a general idea of how fun the game is and forces you to read the actual review to get more specifics and decide for yourself whether it's your type of game or not. I think 5 stars works just fine (not that there's anything wrong with GS's system).

I like gamespots scale best

IGNs is too stupid.

Breaking things down to visuals, gameplay, sound, etc is stupid. Intangibles never go into the scoring(hence low scores for Fallout, Deus Ex, System Shock 2)

the new .5 scale is perfect

9.0- is a great must buy game

9.5- is the very top tier

8.5 and 8.0 are both good games. One is on the verge of being must buy, while the other is just great.

Opinions cannot be accurately transformed into a number.

out of 5 makes a lot more sense.

When you see a 2/5, you usually assume "There is a game with some merit, but has large issues keeping it down."

When you see 40%, you see "This game is terrible."

It's a much better system if you ask me.

that's 3, bare minimum. 2 means it's a crappy game that you can play for more than an hour without gouging your eyeballs.

I like the A - F system the most. It gives you a general idea of what a game is really worth and of coure A never really means perfect.

3 being the bare minimum of playable

i would say my choice review system is simply: buy it, rent it, skip it

have to factor tastes into the 5/5 in order to come out of it with an informed decision

since nobody votes lower than a 7 generally anyways, the 3 is an 8(seems a little too forgiving for an 8 though), 4 is a 9, 5 is a 10 .. the most ambiguous score of all is the dreaded 7/3 though, i never take these ratings to heart..

no real point to a rating like 6 or lower.. just say "don't buy it", it's like getting a 50 in school, yeah it's better than a flat 0 but it's showing that you put in effort and still sucked whereas a 0 or F just implies "try again"

Yeah, a lot of people take 7/3 as a rent but you have games like Disgaea 3 that you probably can't finish in a week or two unless that is all you do.

Well we are basically using an even worse system here on GS with the A, AA, AAA and AAAA scores. This is a system using only 4 digits, everything lower is not worth playing and because of that not worth mentioning.

not an official system, it just sounds better to have "AA" instead of "B". it's archaic, far before my time, and may need renovations soon (like the rest of this damn forum).

I strongly disagree. I don't see reason with that system. There is no difference between a 92 and 93 game especially when you consider that every player has a different opinion about each game.

Actually you're right, I prefer .5 scale myself too, but you're also wrong at the same time, because IGN gave greater scores than Gamespot to all these games you mentioned (or I might misunderstood you, because I wasn't sure if you were referring to low scores by Gamespot or IGN).

god no. the lack of people claiming Gears is the "highest rated shooter of the generation" alone is worth the .5 scale.

Hey you bunch of dumbasses, how about you read how their rating system works, you ignorant bunch of tards.
Jesus. you people are idiots.Reaver1991

agreed. and here it is:

Giant Bomb reviews games on a five-star scale that does not include half-stars. We feel that this benefits our reviews for a number of reasons. Five-star rating systems are a widely accepted standard outside the field of video games, from Amazon.com to The Source, and we feel that the pervasiveness of the five-star system makes it more intuitive for the reader.

It also helps avoid the hair-splitting that can occur within more granular rating systems. A score is designed to provide the most basic at-a-glance information about a game for those considering making a game purchase--it is not there to justify/attack anyone's entrenched position on the relative value of one video-game franchise, developer, publisher, or hardware manufacturer versus another. We include the full text of the review for those looking for more detail.

We do not use any algorithms to reach our final scores, relying instead on the experience of the reviewer. While fundamental issues such as graphical performance and gameplay originality will almost always be factors in determining a final score, it ultimately comes down to how worthwhile the reviewer found the whole experience to be. If that's not enough, here are some simple illustrations we think you'll find helpful:

5 Star

While we don't believe any game is perfect, we recommend this game without reservation.

4 Star

Still very good and easy to recommend, though it doesn't quite live up to its full potential.

3 Star

The halfway point. An inherent appreciation of this game's specific gameplay **** characters, subject matter, and so on may play as big a role in your enjoyment as the actual quality of the game.

2 Star

This game's problems outweigh its good qualities.

1 Star

This game will make you wish you had died in a fire moments before turning it on.

I like the 5-point system the best actually. It takes the majority of the power out of the number and ends a lot of petty bickering. Instead of LOL ur X game is only 8/10 whereas my Y game is 8.5 therefore its better /thread lolololololololololol, you actually have to read the review and argue things based off of what was written, instead of a pointless number.

agreement is rather relative. I've heard "agreement" that Too Human, for instance, was both reviewed fairly and in a biased tone.

Remember when Jeff Gerstmann gave Tony Hawk's Pro Skater a 10, Wario Ware: Smooth Moves a 9.1, and then Twilight Princess an 8.8. What's your point again? If I recall, GameSpot has been known to do this for a long t ime.

By the way, it's not like the review score matters, anyway. I just used your logic here. As long as they back up what they say with legitiment reasons, then it's fine. You didn't point out what made their reviews so bad aside from "the scores."

And if that's the case, then you would probably like it that Jeff left.

What's your reason again?

DeathScape666

Still going on about TP? I thought it was agreed he gave that a fair review.

So you missed my point completely?

Great.

If your point was to prove that different games are reviewed by different standards.

Wait that requires too much common sense. Ill just guess you meant something else.

Nope, that's not what I meant.

And since you still don't understand what I'm talking about, because it obviously takes too much common sense for you, you have resorted to insulting my intelligence.

Go you!

just another reason why using gamerankings as a measuring stick here isn't a good idea. different review sources use different systems but gamerankings counts them all as equal.

So which kinda of review system you prefer, I think a 5 point is good. 5 recommended, 4 good, 3 so so, 2, bad 1. awful. simple and easy.
