For those who haven't seen it yet!.....

Uncharted 3 was unveiled with a teaser trailer that showed series star Nathan Drake venturing out into an expansive desert following an airplane crash – a setting some took to indicate that the game will feature open-world elements.

Not so, game director Justin Richmond told Eurogamer in an interview conducted in the US this month. Well, not quite.

"We're not an open-world game," he said. "We're never going to be an open-world game - just because that's not what we're interested in making."

But, despite Richmond's assertion, Drake's Deception will feel more open than any game in Naughty Dog's illustrious series.

"It's still up in the air how much gameplay we're going to let you wander around," he teased. "It will probably feel more open than the other games have. For sure.

"But we're never going to let you just ride a thousand miles off into the middle of nowhere. Ultimately the feel we want to get is, yeah, you're lost in the desert. So it needs to feel like that. But it's not going to feel open-world."

Which begs the question: how will the game prevent the player from continually walking in a straight line in the wrong direction in that huge desert? What will happen if the player strays too far out of the desert's bounds?

The answer is, well, a secret.

"When we said 'desert' the first thing all the game designers said was, 'Well, crap. How are we going to rein you in?' Richmond said.

"We sent guys to the desert and looked at desert reference and realised that the desert actually does have some natural barriers. There are dunes that are impossible to climb. We sent a couple of our art guys out there and they were trying to climb these dunes and the sand was just sliding. We get away with some of that kind of stuff.

"But at some point we have to do something. And I don't want to say what we did because I think we came up with a really cool solution. But we try not to kill you."

Little is known about Uncharted 3, but scant plot details have emerged. "In his search for the fabled 'Atlantis of the Sands', Nathan Drake and longtime friend and mentor Victor Sullivan set off on a daring trek into the heart of the Arabian Desert," Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer revealed earlier this month.

"But when terrible secrets of this lost city are uncovered, their journey becomes a desperate bid for survival that will force Drake to confront his deepest fears."

Gamespot's GOTY 2011 winner.............................for me :P.............................sure is surpassing UC2 in every way it could.

Also, they mentioned the graphical jump won't be as huge as Drake Fortune's to Among Thieves. But they're mainly focussing on superb animations this time around. Animations integrated to Nate to the point he'll interact to what's happening around him. *look below!!*

See what Amy and the other Dog Devs had tosay on this matter (I recomend you to watch this) First Video on Top.

Thoughts, thoughts, thoughts? :D

Sounds good to me and very similar to how Killzone 3 has made their levels far more expansive and less coridoory. Only one gripe left and that's the sound of the weapons sound a bit weak, everything else is great :)

Noticed that :P

The AK used in the gameplay vid did sound a tidbit weak. But mate we gots to remember Naughty God n.e.v.e.r shows single player footage this early. They are a team of perfectionists and love to take on challenges. Your little gripe will be nothing but a mere memory once the game releases. Trust me, Naughty God has a strong vocal comunity / fans reminding them of this in their official website. :P

Cool, I guess. Previous Uncharted games never gave me the impression of forced linearity, it was very natural and the routes I was taking seemed most logical, even if there were no others to take. Still though, openess could be interesting.

Uncharted 2 felt pretty open in alot of spots, and UC 3 already looks better than UC 2 from a technical standpoint.

Umm I can say the same.... - every game should have the linear gameplay of Geow - every game should have the platforming of Mario - every game should have the rpg element of ME2

You mean in killzone 3 or Uncharted 3? yeah, in killzone 3 weapons don't have as big of a boom anymore. Especially the assult rifle.

But in Uncharrted 3 weapons sound better.

It's obvious that with Sand dunes as the desert barrier, if drake keeps trying to climb then they will make him keep rolling down and he will get to exhausted to try to climb again And then he will faint in the heat and get rescued by guys on camels and take him to their village

Also, I like how he says he doesn't make it open world just because they don't want to. :P Like he could pull off the same experience with an open world game.

FFversus13 so far has shown you can off pull open world with nice graphics on a console (or Only on PS3?)

its more easy on PC of course, its alot harder on consoles to pull off, but props to ND for at least making it seem open world

Some people don't mind sacraficing "freedom" every now and then,if it means a better and more focused story with some nice set-pieces to boot.

Freedom doesn't make games any better if it's not done in a way that makes it feel fun(See BC1's campaign). For the type of game Uncharted is, and for the type of story it's telling, full "openness" wouldn't be good.

Joke right? Uncharted would be a TERRIBLE open world game.

I don't understand why linearity gets such a bad rap these days. Some games are better more open, some are better more linear. I don't mind a couple more choices, or a few more paths to choose fromobviously, but making Uncharted open world would kill it.

More openness is not necessarily a good thing.

I would argue that Uncharted 2's linearity is what gave the levels their exciting forward momentum. Making the levels more open could throw off the pace.

Non-linearity or more freedom is not always a good thing.

Some genres absolutely need freedom and non-linearity to feel rewarding. Others don't.

UC2 is a straight forward cinematic experience. It benefits from its moderately linear design. Open world sort of levels would bog down the place and kill the exciting momentum that UC2's levels had.

UC2 was more linear than UC2 and that's one of the reasons it was so much better.

Uncharted will never be open world in the same sense as Infamous but it can have some sort of openness like it did in the Tibetan Village level in Uncharted 2. Multiple levels, houses, balconies, bridges etc. I doubt Uncharted 3 will be in the desert for most of the game. It'll probably only be in the desert for like 1/6 of the game.

It can be better at the storytelling. The pacing can be "more efficient". Graphics usually are better in linear games. Although nowadays open world games are looking pretty sexy.

I think we have conflicting definitions of the word "many." Because I saw no such thing as "many." It has its moments where you can move around a bit, but even then, the end result is always point A to point B. Then again, ME2 is incredibly linear yet it had its moments as well -- but the overall picture is clear. Uncharted 2 is VERY linear, I don't see how one could say otherwise to be honest. :?

Pacing is the only one which I think has merit. Hard not to be better paced when it's holding your hand the entire time.
