I'd like to know what the actual gameplay benefits of linearity are.DragonfireXZ95

It makes the gameplay tightly controlled, allowing for careful timing and pacing of events.

AI-controlled players/enemies can respond more realistically to the situation, since they have advance knowledge of how the situation is going to play out.

You can also make sure the player actualy plays through a section, rather than just avoiding it somehow.

Which also has the nasty side effect of guaranteeing dullness or tediousness after multiple playthroughs when everything plays exactly the same way.

So GTA don't get dull after replaying a mission several times? All games get dull after multiple playthroughs, open world and linear games You are just finding every bit of excuse to trash talk the Uncharted series. Please try harder next response

Making it more open-world would be a major step up. themyth01
No it wouldn't Uncharted has way to many set pieces for it to be open world.

What's up with all the open-world weirdo's anyway? Why does this game have to be like those? It's an amazing experience... the closest thing you'll get to gameplay + hollywood. Not a bad thing at all.

Is Gears an open world gaming series? No. But it's still an awesome one.

'Not being open-world' is hardly a criticism, and does not apply to Uncharted at all. It does with say... FFXIII, since previous installments on PS2 were way more open world than FFXIII.

Anyway, if you want an open world game, play Infamous or something :| Gamers complaining about this w/Uncharted 3 really don't know what they're talking about.

Folks are calling/hoping for Uncharted 3 to be open world? I think folks just want some more freedom -- Uncharted 3 can easily still follow the same formula yet offering some more gameplay freedom. :?

Selective vision, perhaps? I don't see how calling Uncharted 2 "linear" is bashing. lol...

Scripted events are still doable in open-world games with good design. Personally I don't really care about the scripted sequences, but being open world doesn't exclude them, refer to FFXII.

Maybe so, but they could still make it less linear than U2 with more branching paths or different routes to the same destination. This adds a lot to re-playability.

[QUOTE="theuncharted34"]

[QUOTE="Stevo_the_gamer"]You like having less freedom in your games? :?Stevo_the_gamer

Linear games have tons of benefits over open world and vice versa.

Open world? You honestly think I want Uncharted to go open world? :? I want more ways to go about situations, not the simple always A to B path that Uncharted 2 took. Playing through the game again and experiencing the EXACT same thing is always dreadfully dull.

Solution: Play a different game designed for different paths. Or jump on Uncharted multiplayer :|

Do you ever watch movies twice? Or do you watch it once and forget about it forever since you can't experience scenes differently?

Uncharted 2 was a seamless experience, you can't get the same feel with a game trying to be open world. The game is incredible, and is generally seen as incredible by the gaming community.

You're just looking for something to criticize. Enjoy the game for what it is, which is amazing.

I'd agree with that, always good to have variety and more freedom. I just think you were misinterpreting the term open world. Because lore like Fallout, or linear-open-world style like Crysis... that just would ruin Uncharted's pacing, and the game would lose its appeal. Yeah, you can still have your typical set pieces and scipted sequyences, but I doubt it would be even possible to keep it in line or up to par to what Uncharted 2 did.

So more smokes and mirrors.

Also, I like how he says he doesn't make it open world just because they don't want to. :P Like he could pull off the same experience with an open world game.

tagyhag

I'm glad they don't waste time with an open world game. Open world games are the ones I find the most boring and I never replay them. Tons of filler, samey side jobs, collection quests of items in places that make no sense. Open world is almost as much of a hype killer for me as hearing that a game will be an FPS.

Multiples paths for different solutions could be nice U1 and U2 had this, in some instances you could either go rambo route or stealth mode anyways, more alternatives would be nice BTW: Rotten apples aim for teh union! attack 8)!!!!

You guys know what's funny i find myself replaying linear games more than open world ones, Infamous 2 replayed it 2 times, RDR on the second playthrough couldn't even get myself to play the irish missions because i was too bored, FO3 1 playthrough was enough, Uncharted 1 3 replays, Uncharted 2 4 replays, bioshock 1 2 replays.

Preference isn't exactly amusing. :P We all prefer our all styIe of games, I'm more drawn to open world games (Fallout, for example) because they offer longevity that can't be found in really linear games. (RPGs being exception to this rule, ME2 is linear as heck but has replay value)

FFversus13 so far has shown you can off pull open world with nice graphics on a console (or Only on PS3?)

its more easy on PC of course, its alot harder on consoles to pull off, but props to ND for at least making it seem open world

HaloinventedFPS

Not to rain on your parade. But do you mean that FFvsXIII we only seen about ten seconds of gameplay of? (which BTW didn't show to much of the world map). Back on topic I do not mind the Uncharted games being linear, but if they are going to make some of the areas in U3 more vast, I'm all down for it. (as long as they aren't trying to make it a full fledged open world title)
