Great, first he ruins all of our favorite franchises and now wants to make Activision into a sweatshop

He is a CEO and he wants his employees to work fast and efficiently
I would do the same if I was in his position

Well fast as possible of course
Would you not do the same if you could maximize use of time? You have to remember, he is the CEO of the company, it is all numbers and dollars for him

It doesn't have to be ALL, money has to mean a lot of your a CEO of a company, but you don't have to take the passion out of it.
Every time Bobby Kotick talks, it makes me want to quit playing video games. Seriously. He wants to instill, "skepticism, pessimism and fear." He wants to keep people focused on their, "deep depression." Who in their right mind would want to work for him? :|
I completely disagree with his practice but this is the truth, this guy is just a CEO, not really a gamer. Though it's pretty stupid to make this kind of bold statements as if we would think highly of him afterwards.Well fast as possible of course

Well, he is trying to keep his job
I am sure you would do the same in his position
Kotick and Activision must fall! Let's all shake 'em down ACORN style! Who's with me?!
Seriously, though, Kotick is the sickness of the gaming industry and we need a cure.

See, I wouldn't be in his position, I wouldn't get myself in that position.. I would rather be a CEO of a small independent publisher/developer then be in any big CEOs shoes.

I doubt most people want to work at Activision with him there. But he is taking advantage of the current economic situation knowing full well that there is not much work out there right now. If these were better times he would lose alot of key people and then his own job after.Every time Bobby Kotick talks, it makes me want to quit playing video games. Seriously. Also, what is this about?
"The executive said game makers just haven't reached a point yet where the mouth movement and facial animation of game characters is good enough to establish a compelling emotional attachment from the player." Oh really?
And those are just two examples. Maybe they don't have time to focus on facial animations because they're too full of fear.
while i can respect that he's trying to run a business, he is a real "jerk" about it.i can tell you from personal experience that when people act like that it only brings bad things (like a high turnover rate and low morale) if you have to keep hiring new people b/c your vets all leftthen you have to just spend that much more money in the long run getting noobs up to speed. im not saying he should install margarita machines and line dancing, but these guys already spend too much time at the office anyways, you don't want to demoralize them for that. if jim comes up with an idea that has the possibility of being awesome in a game, dont throw it out just because it doesn't fit what your criteria dictates for a game to equal a certain amount of $.
-sigh- Robert Kotick fails hard, I hope he gets the jack and someone else will take over and will not milk every franchise to death with crappy and lackluster yearly sequels.

Indeed, my friend. If devs are forced into a situation where they end up hating what they do, how do you think it will turn out for the gamers? It always shows when a dev has put love into a game from having the freedom to express their vision and that extra effort and level of polish are what separates a good game from a bad one. We are not talking blanket factories here, we are talking game development for crying out loud. This kind of approach does nothing for trying establish games as a form of art. In fact, it is a complete contradiction of that notion altogether.

Very true, I am sure every major dev is like that

With that quote is quite clear Kotick has never played Half-Life 2, because the facial animation in that game is top notch.
This is what basically happened to Hollywood IMO. The industry started amassing so huge amounts of money that now most just try to play it safe instead of being creative and having fun. Now anything that invests 100 million or more in special effects but has 0 plot or anything artistic is an instant success. People like these destroy anything, they are in only for the money, no love of making anything actually good, everything is reduced to just a product. The video game insdustry is still not totally like that but it could become that and that day I will stop gaming. This is it, MW2 is the last game im buying from activision.
This is an industry based on creativity and if he wants his workers to feel scared and skeptical then there will be only milkage.

idiots all of you, he didnt say he wanted to take the fun out of making video games, read the article!!!!

"The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games."

Or is that mabye just a bit harsh...?
This guy's PR skills are equivalent to a rock's. You don't say things like that to the press even if you mean it.
His company, his policies. Considering how well Activision has been doing lately, I'm not in position to question him.IronBass
Actually it's quite easy to question outright stating you want your employees to be disatisfied with their own work. That's not a good way to make your company look good, and it raises the question why did he do this interview if he didn't really care that the people reading the article were going to be annoyed by it. As far as I'm concerned saying what he has just said can not have a positive impact on peoples impression of the company, and as a CEO he should be spending his time more efficently. It really says alot about him.If Activision starts to lose money, the blame will rest entirely on him, regardless of who really caused the problem. He's setting himself up badly if you ask me.
