It's called a Keyboard and Mouse. I know the PS3 absolutely has the capability of using KB/M in games because it was done in UT3 over a year ago. I am sure the XBox supports KB/M, just not sure whether it can be used in games.

What is holding them back? The controls are the biggest obstacle in making a console RTS. I say continue trying to perfect console controls for RTS', but give people the option of using KB/M in the meantime. RTS is a decidedly hardcore genre. I think anyone serious enough to care about the games will plug in a KB/M or even buy a new one. MS could even cash in on a new periph or two. :P

Is there something I am missing? I know games need to find as big an audience as possible, so you can't do away with gamepad controls, but at least offer the KB/M option since the consoles are able to handle it. If there are legal or technical issues which do not allow 360 to do it, that is a niche PS3 can fill, they always use a boost.

because who the hell wants to use a kb&m with a console, you would be forced to use a desk or some sort of flat surface on ur lap or somthing, if i want to play rts, fps, etc with a kb&m, ill play them ona pc, where their meant to be played

console gaming is ment for convenience, and just kicking back on ur bed/couch and playing with a controller

If you were going to do that then why not leave it on RTS on the PC. Where it belongs.

Hmm, as soon as I read this I realized that in order to fit all of the control mappings on a controller, the KB/M option would have to be dumbed down anyway. There would just be too big a gap between the two control types. I still think we are smart enough to come up with a good compromise. Someone will do it, and it will be like Halo all over again.

Are there any RTS' on the Wii, it seems like it would work well with the pointer. You could use 2 wiimotes. One to control the camera and the other to move the arrow.

EDIT: actually that would be pretty lame, i think it would confuse people too much. But im sure there are other ways for it to work.

The same reason people don't play all their other games on PCs. They don't have one. People used to say that FPS belonged on the PC and it would never be right on a console. It can be done, someone just needs to figure out how.

A game platform is a game platform. How you use it is up to you. There is no reason not to at least include the option. They sell gamepads for PC.

the whole point of a console is that you can sit in your comfy sofa/bed whilst playing and relax.

Having a keyboard (unless you go for wireless which costs more) means sitting at a desk, and even without a desk having a keyboard and mouse on you lap may not work well...

Games like Halo Wars really should have KB/M support. It just makes sense. For all these people who say you need a desk, would a table not suffice? Or even better, how about your knees? It's not hard you know. Consoles may use controllers because they are portable and easiser to wield, but why not just create a keyboard specically for gaming. It could be smaller and wireless. They would have to add support for it for each game, which may take longer, but it may also widen the audience. I would be quite happy to use my 360 with KB/M, I already share my monitor between PC and console.

abit off topic: i just started playing some FPS on my PC and the conrols are horrible! i hate having to play on a flat surface, i hate using W, A, S and D to move and aiming is a pain. after some time i might get better but controls>>>>>>>>>>K/B & mouse for FPS ontopic: adding K/B & mouse to a console rts would be unfair on those who dont have a keyboard conected to the console (unless they have the option to use both)

 Sorry, but that's just too bad. It's like saying people who play SF4 with an arcade stick have an unfair advatnage, but it's quite simple to overcome, buy an arcade stick. If people are serious about playing RTS on a console, and have the option for KB/M, they will be serious enough to take it. If someone is not serious enough about it to use a KB/M, then they are obviously not as serious about it as other players who would, and hence they would never be as competitive anyway.

Maybe to you that is the point of a console. To a lot of people the issue is stable, standardized hardware that doesn't require constant upgrades, virus scans, etc. Consoles are reliable. I love my PC, but in almost 18 years of PC gaming (I was 8 when I played through Wolfenstein 3D) I have gone through innumerable headaches, heartbreaks, and upgrades that I just have not had to endure on any of my consoles. Being able to sit on a couch is certainly a perk, but it's not the only reason people choose consoles. Not even close.

Hoo-rah so I'm not alone. Personally I would love to see it. I have an up-to-date PC that will easily run Dawn of War and ETW, but I would absolutely buy RTS on consoles if they let me use a KB/M.

Well, Halo Wars has proven that RTS can be done well on a console, it's a great start in providing nice accurate controls on a console. You can select single units, one type of unit, a storm of units, switch to different bases, etc with ease, it's very easy to plan and execute mass raids thanks to the controls, so I hope they build on the halo wars engine, and make it even better next time out.
